also - has anyone seen it live? He's playing a gig before the sonar festival...

Yes, it's beautiful.

I saw something on BBC London News about a house presenter making a record influenced by big band music but kind of assumed it was some godawful novelty record and didn't pay any attention, and now you say that this was HERBERT?!

dave o'higgins plays on it, so it can't be completely bad

zebedee (zebedee), Monday, 19 May 2003 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i was looking for this in tower and hmv the other day and there was no sign of it,though i think its supposed to out by now
i have a few mp3s,some are really good, others i'd wan't to listen to again before making my mind up about them...

"can't be completely bad"? pah! it's very, very good. i've just reviewed it and thought it was gorgeous... the live show is pretty spesh, too... you should go... i saw it at the royal festival hall and was very impressed... unfortunately it was supported by jamie liddell who is pretty crap on his own, but dani siciliano has never sounded better and arto lindsay sings on the album, too...

I'm fascinated by the possibilites of this...does it swing? Does it have electronic production elements? Is it all British musicians?

Jordan (Jordan), Monday, 19 May 2003 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

. i found it a bit boring, i guess i just hate J*zz..

jk_ (jk@gabba), Monday, 19 May 2003 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

it does swing but not as much as it might... v political... it's good

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Monday, 19 May 2003 20:40 (twenty-two years ago)

it's reverentially straight in approach, apart from some metaediting with the source materials on two tracks. don't expect digital fusion, expect hello swingtime. but he's always been serious about his composition, that's the focus here.

Reviewed it for Uncut but was very disappointed by it, I'm afraid - bit too 1959 Third Stream for my liking, and I didn't think the various electronic manipulations made much aural impact. The best track by far is "The Three Ws" which hardly uses the big band at all (and sounds like an outtake from Bodily Functions). Certainly doesn't compare with the mindblowing new London Improvisers Orchestra CD (but then again I KNOW several of the LIO so I'm biased heh!).

Go see it live - saw it at the Tramway (Glasgow) and was completely blown away. I'm prepared to believe that it doesn't work in quite the same way on record.

doctorB, Tuesday, 20 May 2003 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Great, another "logical extension" of an artistic approach that I can look forward to being disappointed with. (See also Luomo's _The Present Lover_.) (Note that I've heard neither of these records.)

Clarke B., Tuesday, 20 May 2003 17:20 (twenty-two years ago)

that herbert interview in the wire annoyed me immensely. he makes bland coffee table music with a smug patina of glitch surface and political "referencing" making it all so terribly "right on". his PCCOM is no brainer no message no point "i am the smuggest man in music" statement. he reminds me of the travel section in the guardian.
travel my arse - frickin HOLIDAYS.

bob snoom, Tuesday, 20 May 2003 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

somewhere around here is thread where i got mad at PCCOM. i don't mind any of these ideas so much now, however silly or pompous. it yields a distinguished sound which is good and smashing big macs is always fun but on this big band thing it turns besides the point. i like "the three w's" a lot better than most of the tracks too because it keeps the novel approach, the rest isn't necessarily bad but it's not the side of Herbert i've found most favorable in the past. which is probably what a lot of people are saying.

Honda (Honda), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 01:16 (twenty-two years ago)

bob - y're my new hero but expect an e-mail from MH soon! (this is based on past experience: my mate robbie slagged off radio boy on ILM and was promptly mailed)

zebedee (zebedee), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I wonder if anyone is going to review this in terms of whether it's a good big band record or not.

Jordan (Jordan), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

six months pass...
REvive.

So it is a decent big band record?
