Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 19 May 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Pet Sounds, for the most part. "Wouldn't It Be Nice", "You Still Believe In Me", "God Only Knows"... a few dark moments obv., but you do need a bit of foil.

Aaron A., Monday, 19 May 2003 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Grease's own...

(OK, I haven't heard it. But apparently this was produced by Michael Zager! How'd that happen?)

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 19 May 2003 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

are there any album covers with just cute kittens in a basket or something?

Aaron A., Monday, 19 May 2003 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know about Double Fantasy, man, "Losing You" ain't exactly "good natured."

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 19 May 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

The Stone Roses debut is brimming with good vibes. And actually, all the b-sides and early Roses tracks too.

Zuc Hansterson, Monday, 19 May 2003 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Er....The Stone Roses.....you sure about that?

"I'm throwing stones at you man, I want you black and blue and I'm going to make you bleed....gonna bring down to your knees."

yeah, that's pretty good vibey alright.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 19 May 2003 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I love Didi Conn! She was on "Shining Time Station", a favorite show as a kid, and I always wanted her as an aunt. She's just so nice and good-hearted. She was always smiling and saying nice things.

The Sound of Music

...and also The SSSound of MMMusic?

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Monday, 19 May 2003 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

The Stone Roses debut is brimming with good vibes.

The result in "Elizabeth My Dear" was desired but not exactly celebratory in tone.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 19 May 2003 20:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I think this would be the s/t debut by The Happiest Guys in the World, featuring "You Can Make a Difference If You Try, Try, Try!!" happiestguys.com, people.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 19 May 2003 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

IT's gotta be "Friends" by the Beach Boys. If there are any bad vibes on that, then i haven't heard em!

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 19 May 2003 23:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Surely it has to be something by Jonathan Richman?

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Monday, 19 May 2003 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

nice man(francis macdonald) 'sauchiehall and hope'

keith (keithmcl), Monday, 19 May 2003 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, Jim, Thw Wiggles. You saved me the trouble of posting it myself. And let's not forget Bob The Builder - he's a can-do guy, and him and Wendy make a great team.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

The Modern Lovers' first comes to mind here. Maybe a little edgy in its good-naturedness, but not so much as to remove it from contention.

Matt Maxwell (Matt M.), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 01:31 (twenty-two years ago)

My vote goes to anything by the Free Design. You know these people were probably very active in their church youth group. They have an album called Kites are Fun fer crying out loud! KITES ARE FUN!!

Ernest P. (ernestp), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 02:03 (twenty-two years ago)

the falaming lips? inadvertant or not.

big d (big d), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 09:02 (twenty-two years ago)

KITES ARE FUN = waaaayyyy better than Kitties are fun.

(Or even Kates Are Fun)

Obviously.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 09:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Dunno Tuomas, that album is superficially good-natured, but it has a black heart which gets revealed on later releases.

What about Salako?

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 09:43 (twenty-two years ago)

What do you mean by that? Even if Boards of Canada have relased darker stuff later on, that doesn't mean Music Has the Right to Children suddenly becomes dark too.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 09:47 (twenty-two years ago)

It does in context of later albums and also on it's own. Loads of backwards messages and eerie melodies. And what about the last track? Good intentioned, definitely, but it feels like a proverbial storm-in-a-teacup to me.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 10:04 (twenty-two years ago)

soon as i saw the thread title i thought 'happiness'
and - lo ! alex in nyc was already there.

piscesboy, Tuesday, 20 May 2003 11:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Little Feat -- Dixie Chicken (or most of their records)

70s Little Feat in general is pretty up beat music, even when the songs are about truck drivers losing their load and going to their death.

earlnash, Tuesday, 20 May 2003 11:19 (twenty-two years ago)

A vote here for Chris Rea's appaling "Expresso Logic". Now theres an album that couldn't beat up a baby even if you gave it a flail.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 12:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Loads of backwards messages and eerie melodies.

Backwards messages? What, is Boards of Canada telling me to kill myself?

And what about the last track?

To me that last track was always laughable. Who in the world would try to stop someone from listening to this silly fluff? Can you imagine a politician saying: "Boards of Canada is corrupting our youth, we must ban this album!"

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Anything by GG Allen

William R Henderson (Cabin Essence), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 14:14 (twenty-two years ago)

*falls over*

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Ever heard The Bobs? There ya go.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

surely not the first first Modern Lovers album. The one with "She Cracked" and "Hospital" and "I'm Straight?"
Maybe later stuff like that live alb with "I'm A Little Airplane," "I'm A Little Dinosaur," "Ice Cream Man," "I'm Nature's Mosquito" and "My Little Kookenhaken."

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Brak, from Space Ghost has an album out. I've heard one song, "I Like Hubcaps," and it seems pretty goddamn good-natured to me.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

"Music has the Right to Children" = Pure Evil

Well maybe not totally evil, but good this album is too nightmareish for me personally. It's like a warped mirror reflecting childhood... most listeners would probably find it unsettling. True, it has it's upbeat moments... but for the most part it's like watching Mr. Rogers neighborhood with a head full of bad acid and cough medicine.

my vote goes for:

The Man they call Dan (The Man they call Dan), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Before anyone asks, the reason I post this album to so many of these threads is because it's actually my favourite ever. But it's more good natured than the guy on the front of it.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drf400/f499/f49953oyoc1.jpg

I hate this record like bloody buggery poison, as it is SO AGRESSIVELY good vibey, it seems to be hiding something sinister, if not downright evil. They sound like a twisted cult that will smile while they tell you you have to kill yourself.

It makes a lot of people happy, though.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Brak has several albums out, actually. They're inconsistent
(of course) but occasionally brain-explodingly funny.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

What is it, Kenan?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

omfg dom! where can i get that album?!! I've had the theme from mr. rossi (viva happiness) in my head for weeks!

which polyphonic spree record is that btw?

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

aha! didn't realise they had different covers in britain and america - i prefer the us one for some reason.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i agree with the salako pick, gentle hippies. i guess that could apply to p. spree too but then he was in tripping daisy too.

keith (keithmcl), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 23:53 (twenty-two years ago)

ditto to Free Design, Jonathan Richman

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 20 May 2003 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Dog Latin- "Signor Rossi OST" by the Franco Godi Ensemble was released on CD and vinyl by Crippledickhotwax records back in 1999. Amazon.com has a copy for sale here: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00000ID35/qid=1053478625/sr=8-2/ref=sr_8_2/102-8704834-4380153?v=glance&s=music&n=507846

If you like "Viva Happiness"... get the album. More "Viva Happiness" than you could ever dream of. My favourite's the acapella in Italian version.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 00:00 (twenty-two years ago)

also All-Girl Summer Fun Band if noone's said them yet

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 00:01 (twenty-two years ago)

This crosses the line into unbearably good-natured. But still: - http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drf400/f462/f46265k65ma.jpg

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 01:40 (twenty-two years ago)

The Modern Lovers' first comes to mind here. Maybe a little edgy in its good-naturedness, but not so much as to remove it from contention.

Uh, "Modern World", "Hospital" and if you count Original Modern Lovers, there's "Walk Up hte Street"

-Colin

Colin Beckett (Colin Beckett), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 02:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I LOVE BRAK!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 10:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Circulatory System's first record. Not unbearably "happy," but good-natured like a mofo.

Neudonym, Wednesday, 21 May 2003 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Colin, I beatcha to it:

surely not the first first Modern Lovers album. The one with "She Cracked" and "Hospital" and "I'm Straight?"
Maybe later stuff like that live alb with "I'm A Little Airplane," "I'm A Little Dinosaur," "Ice Cream Man," "I'm Nature's Mosquito" and "My
Little Kookenhaken."
