Music Timelines/Textbooks

Does anybody know any good comprehensive textbooks that cover music in general, like from classical to oh, say late 90's?!? Wondering if there is such a thing. The real heart of the thing is i really would like some type of timeline to see various jazz, country, folk, blues, rock performers, etc.. when they lived, died, when they had their greatest influence and how it maybe affected others.

Hmmm, this may have to be more of a do it yourselfer i guess, but still, if anyone knows of any good college comprehensive textbooks for music in general, please let me know. I've got tons of books that cover different individual aspects, but i'd like one catch all place ta go if i could!

Admittedly, this is online and not a text book, but it does have that timeline you mentioned, and an extremely broad definition of "rock" music (handily incorporating those other genres -- jazz, country, folk, blues, etc -- you refer to). He also has a link on that page where he justifies some of it.
