Anyone a regular at this venue, is it right you have to dress up smart that seems a touch odd, or is that just for the restaurant?
Thinking of going to see Terry Callier and Jazzy Jeff but i want to go to a place with atmosphere not restrictions.

Nah, you don't dress up smart for the venue. I've never eaten there, but I've seen a few decent people at The Jazz Cafe. Doesn't Terry Callier like, live there?

Last time I went I was scruffy-ish but they let me in no problem. I also didn't get the 'looking you up and down to see if you're cool enough' vibe from the doorstaff that you get in a lot of places. Good job really.

From the times I've been there (to see Lewis Taylor and Pharoah Sanders) it's been pretty chilled out.

Don't know about the restaurant.

no dress problems. but there is a sign that says "shut the fuck up". or STFU.

It's an ok venue, not in any way posey. Unless you eat it's standing room only, and if its crowded can get stuffy and views can be restricted especially if you are less than about 5'10" (not a problem for me but my wife has struggled to get a decent view on occasion). The food is pretty mediocre and not particularly cheap but served on a balcony so can be just about worth it to get a guaranteed seat and reasonable view.

it sounds like the name of something in a David Cronenberg movie, or a Lenoard Cohen song

The STFU signs are there for a reason. The last time I was there the Gil Scott Heron gig was totally spoilt by cutlery, plates and the loud hum of conversation from upstairs. I've been to some noisy venues but this was really poor. Jazz restaurants - c or d? Or put it this way, at least have everyone eating if you're going to serve food while there's a gig going on!

yeah but....theres a difference between 'please keep noise to a miniumum' or something, and SHUT THE FUCK UP in massive letters down a pillar...isnt there?
