Taking Sides: Ricky Ross vs Stuart Murdoch

Two Glaswegian songwriters / band leaders / visionaries / singers who led their large, unwieldy collectives to success. Both have flirted with soul and other genres. More importantly, perhaps, both seem to have attempted to capture a sense of the Local in their work - a vernacular, particularized Glaswegian vision, idiolect or setting to which they seek to pay homage. This has extended to a certain 'culturally Scottish' espousal of socialism. They even look quite similar.

But which is better?

I admit I'd like this to have been Diana Ross vs. Stuart Braithwaite.

I try to avoid both the subjects under discussion. They both seemed designed for niche audiences I'm not a part of.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 20 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'm pulling a Pinefox on the Pinefox... Who is Ricky Ross?

Kate the Saint, Friday, 20 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Singer of Deacon Blue. And the good news is - THEY'RE BACK!

the pinefox, Friday, 20 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, come off it. Are there some real gone kids here who prefer Deacon Blue over Belle & Sebastian? Most likely those who plum for DB will really only make their choice as they have a thing against B&S.

'Raintown' is bollocks. btw.

Re: Singer of Deacon Blue. And the good news is - THEY'RE BACK!

oh no! Pinefox you never fail to amaze me - with the dragging up of rubbish from the 80s grave! Go West, Deacon Blue what ever next Fairground Attraction or Limahl ?

Glasgow from the 80s I would rather listen to Blue Nile: A Walk Across the Rootftops, and from the late 90s Mogwai: Young Team.

I with Ned on both accounts. My world does not need the FM MOR songs slop of Deacon Blue or the wimpy annoying mumbling of Belle & Sebastian. Two dreadful bands.

PS Pinefox Do you rate Tinseltown in the Rain by The Blue Nile?

DJ Martian, Friday, 20 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Two bald men fighting over a comb.

Andrew L, Friday, 20 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Martian: I'd like to hear it. I never have. I imagine that I might like it if I did. Hard to say.

I don't care much for Fairground Attraction, and I certainly won't be dragging Limahl anywhere in the near future.

I don't think I prefer DB over B&S. I'm not quite sure. Perhaps we need a 'Deacon Blue: Search & Destroy'.

Personally I am struck by what a fine debut the Raintown LP is. Almost comparable to 'Tigermilk' in a way.

upcoming attractions on ILM:

Taking Sides: Stuart Murdoch vs. Lloyd Cole

Taking Sides: Stuart Murdoch vs. Dylan

Taking Sides: Stuart Murdoch vs. The Bard from Asterix

Not to be pedantic but is this going to prove anything other than Stuart can really write good tunes (yea) and Pinefox is running out of bands to discuss? ;)

Omar, Saturday, 21 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Omar: I'm not sure I understand what you're getting at. Elaboration?

the pinefox, Saturday, 21 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Aah but Pinefox explaining jokes = dud. Surely you've noticed there are other Taking Sides: Stuart Murdoch vs X threads? Just wondering if there is a new tendecy in topics and even...gasp...if there is a point to it? Don't let me be a killjoy, so please proceed.

Omar, Saturday, 21 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Murdoch vs Cole: this is tough, in a way. Both have virtues. But Lloyd wins it for me. Others will feel differently.

Murdoch vs Dylan: how silly. This is no contest.

Bard from Asterix: don't know what he sounds like.

the pinefox, Saturday, 21 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Murdoch vs Dylan: how silly. This is no contest.

Didn't realize you rated Murdoch that highly!

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 21 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Bard from Asterix: don't know what he sounds like.

According to the Asterix web site, his name in English is Cacafonix, which can't be a good sign. But then it's said that his characteristic trait is "d'une grande susceptibilité"...

youn, Saturday, 21 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ah, Asterix. Love it. Yes, Cacofonix is known for his uniformly horrible playing -- his particular schtick per issue is to be tied up and gagged before he even begins to try. ;-)

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 21 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So is that what you think they should do with Murdoch before each gig, Ned?

the pinefox, Saturday, 21 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Goddamn! You've described a dream scenario! Thanks, pinefox! :-)

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 21 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Omar: Taking Sides: Stuart Murdoch vs X
Definitely X. Wild Gift is playing on the stereo at the moment actually. Never liked the records that came after Wild Gift and La (except maybe Unclogged).

nathalie (nathalie), Saturday, 21 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Taking Sides: Stuart Murdoch vs Omar

Patrick, Saturday, 21 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Please let it be Stuart. My guitar wank-chops are out of order, my voice is only good for acid-house talk-overs and lyrics are beneath me of course ;) But a more interesting question: who in music really sounds like Cacophonix?

Omar, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Jad Fair?

Richard Tunnicliffe, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Michael Bolton
[enter Frank Kogan with rocket launcher and screaming justified rage in his eyes...]

(It's the hair, Frank. I never got to hear what ether of them sounded like, the mob was too quick with the gag.)

The kneejerk revulsion toward Deacon Blue demonstrated here is more to do with emotional convenience than listening to their records and thinking abt them: the foxtrix — our very own chuck eddy — is perfectly correct. I imagine I would find DC boring, but to be honest I haven't the slightest idea.

mark s, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

C = B. Bootylicious is the gratest record ever made.

mark s, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If I'd said Cootielicious, that wd indeed have been a superior pile-up of hilarious quips.

mark s, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Mark S is right: Deacon Blue are great, and I am indeed the Chuck Norris of ILM. (I did read that right, didn't I?)

the pinefox, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Amazing fact: after 25 posts or so, Stuart Murdoch has FAILED TO DEFEAT RICKY ROSS in the ILM public's affections. That's like Lennox Lewis failing to land a punch on, um, Philip Schofield. So much for B&S being back on form.

the pinefox, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If I try VERY hard I can just about recall the chorus of a Deacon Blue record from around 1989/90. (Ooh, ooh, ooh, / doo, da-doo, ooh, ooh). Female vocalist on this bit, I think, but title unknown. I don't have any opinion about DB or Mr. Ross which makes them hands down winners over the truly terrible B+S and Murdoch.

Dr. C, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh sorry I forgot: it's Stu over Ricky from Boring Blue. Easy.

Now having taken the time I can come up with one candidate for real life Cacophonix, his name: Captain Beefheart.

Omar, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And it's 1-1!

the pinefox, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That's the horrendous "Real Gone Kid", Dr C.

Murdoch, of course.

Robin Carmody, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

five years pass...
RICKY ROSS vs. RICK ROSS. FITE!
