But which is better?

I try to avoid both the subjects under discussion. They both seemed designed for niche audiences I'm not a part of.

'Raintown' is bollocks. btw.

oh no! Pinefox you never fail to amaze me - with the dragging up of rubbish from the 80s grave! Go West, Deacon Blue what ever next Fairground Attraction or Limahl ?
Glasgow from the 80s I would rather listen to Blue Nile: A Walk Across the Rootftops, and from the late 90s Mogwai: Young Team.
I with Ned on both accounts. My world does not need the FM MOR songs slop of Deacon Blue or the wimpy annoying mumbling of Belle & Sebastian. Two dreadful bands.
PS Pinefox Do you rate Tinseltown in the Rain by The Blue Nile?

I don't care much for Fairground Attraction, and I certainly won't be dragging Limahl anywhere in the near future.
I don't think I prefer DB over B&S. I'm not quite sure. Perhaps we need a 'Deacon Blue: Search & Destroy'.
Personally I am struck by what a fine debut the Raintown LP is. Almost comparable to 'Tigermilk' in a way.

Taking Sides: Stuart Murdoch vs. Lloyd Cole
Taking Sides: Stuart Murdoch vs. Dylan
Taking Sides: Stuart Murdoch vs. The Bard from Asterix
Not to be pedantic but is this going to prove anything other than Stuart can really write good tunes (yea) and Pinefox is running out of bands to discuss? ;)

Murdoch vs Dylan: how silly. This is no contest.
Bard from Asterix: don't know what he sounds like.
Didn't realize you rated Murdoch that highly!

According to the Asterix web site, his name in English is Cacafonix, which can't be a good sign. But then it's said that his characteristic trait is "d'une grande susceptibilité"...

(It's the hair, Frank. I never got to hear what ether of them sounded like, the mob was too quick with the gag.)
The kneejerk revulsion toward Deacon Blue demonstrated here is more to do with emotional convenience than listening to their records and thinking abt them: the foxtrix — our very own chuck eddy — is perfectly correct. I imagine I would find DC boring, but to be honest I haven't the slightest idea.

Now having taken the time I can come up with one candidate for real life Cacophonix, his name: Captain Beefheart.
Murdoch, of course.
