MC Mabon's Mr Blaidd album, as nabbed up by me last week for £2, is fucking wicked. It may just be sentiment, but I quite like Tystion's Shrug Off Ya Complex too.

What other Welsh rap is there that is great? Or otherwise?

Nothing's as good as the Tystion stuff when MC Mabon was on board, IMO. But Pep Le Pew, The Headcase Ladz, and Recall are all worth a look. And Newport's Goldie Lookin' Chain, if you like your rapping with more laffs than, shall we say, technical aptitude.

headcase ladz are a bit silly.

I like the Fleapit records a lot but haven't heard the Beefeaters yet (I'll be remedying this soon). Junior Disprol = best rapper name evah, obv.

Search: Recall - 'Volcanos' EP, Tystion - Hen Gelwydd Prydain Newydd

Yeah, stop it.
An' by the way boy, does my bum look big in this?

mei (mei), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 17:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha. Are those your pics?

Johnny B & Keltech are good. Wonky Wax, which is Headcase Ladz' label, puts out good stuff. The Beefeaters is Fleapit's new thing and is reportedly excellent but I haven't heard them yet. Skinz, formerly Potato Skinz, had a single last year, the chorus of which went "If she doesn't suck my dick she buys her own chips". So, er, there you are.

Hip-Dub Reggae-Hop by Llbwyr Llaethog is a really good comp, and their early singles are dead funny sub-sub-Sugarhill AABB rhyme scheme bilingual rap. There was a bit of a scene in the early 90s with DJ Jaffa, MC Eric (Me One) and some other people, but this is way before my time. Good luck with finding any of the records.

Surely not.

Fucking hell, S4C.... so much to answer for.

russ t, Thursday, 22 May 2003 09:42 (twenty-two years ago)

All free and legal cos they ain't bread heads.

I think it's a great language to rap in. I really do. All those hard consonants.

Live shows are a problem though. You get convered in so much spit. It's like the Sex Pistols to the power of Biz Markie.*

*some of this may be untrue

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 22 May 2003 10:39 (twenty-two years ago)

But there's no 'J' in Welsh so there could be no J Zee or Jam Master Jay. Or J-Lo.

Is that good or bad?

mei (mei), Thursday, 22 May 2003 10:41 (twenty-two years ago)

This is true - the removal of the letter J would blow a large hole in the history of hip-hop.

Artists such as, um, Llarge Proffessor will have to take greater prominence to avoid a vacuum.

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 22 May 2003 10:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, there are plenty of els which is a big plus for people
like LL Cool... no, wait, shit.

mei (mei), Thursday, 22 May 2003 10:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Iesu Mawr, we'll be having Pobl Y Cwm goes Gabba next.....

russ t, Thursday, 22 May 2003 10:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Steffan Cravos from Tystion was actually a cast member on Pobl Y Cwm IIRC... so it all ties up very nicely.

This is like that website that says "The last page of the internet" or something... the last thread of ILM...

DJ Mencap (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 22 May 2003 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

A mate of mine was on there once, too... played a lazy lodger up til last year.... can't remember the character name.

russ t, Thursday, 22 May 2003 12:52 (twenty-two years ago)

...and my cousin Kate was on tere too as a bit part in the background in a pub. Beat that!

mei (mei), Thursday, 22 May 2003 13:01 (twenty-two years ago)

....at the last count, there were only 3 actors on the Equity books from Wales (not counting Rhys Ifans and Ioan Gryffudd).... it's like Australian soaps where you see them all in different guises in every programme.

Oh, and I was in a BBC play called Street Life based in Caerphilly. I played a smackhead....

russ t, Thursday, 22 May 2003 14:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Clarse... did you have special grey makeup or summat? I think Gareth Potter would be one of the Equity card carriers - he was in Ty Gwydr who were a kind of rap/techno/house crossover who were pretty big in Wales about ten years ago. He is also a lovely man.
