Why does this thing fail all the time on my PC?

About 50% of the time, when I try to look at ILM, my browser (IE6) tries to download the file (of type ".php"). If I choose to open it, it's gibberish. The other half (or so) of the time, it opens fine. I've read on some php bulletin boards that this is a problem with older versions of the php server software. I've had this happen on multiple PCs running Win2K. Hasn't happened on my mac.

Anyone else see this? Fixes?

Of course it doesn't happen on a Mac -- they actually work.

Unlike their owners.

I only mentioned that my mac worked as a datapoint to try to regress this issue, not as a jumping-off point for a bunch of tired mac vs PC arguments. Any php people want to try and answer this seriously? So far today, my PC hasn't had any problems with the site.

C'mon, lighten up. If you can't tease these humorless, angry-with-the-world-and-especially-my-computer PC users, than who can you tease?
I guess all the people I know with their stories about PCs freezing up or crashing on a consistent basis were lying. Hasn't happened once to me. Only computers that aren't 100% reliable "suck ass," Mr. Jay. Why anyone would use a computer that can't do away with junk mail or Web pop-ups is beyond me.
Macs cost more? And a Jaguar costs more than a beat-up Ford. Your point being ...?
I have to admit, however, that I'm sad to see that Microsoft has flushed plans for its recent cutting-edge technological breakthrough, the Internet-enabled toilet called the iLoo. I think it's a perfect fit.

You logic means that Macs "suck ass" I'm afraid. ;-P

I have experienced just as many crashes with Macs as PCs. I use macs at work, my girlfiend has a nice looking iBook and I have a home-built PC. Most problems people exprience would not occur on a clean system, XP and OSX are both incredibly stable for mass-market OSs and I would say that Windows 2000 is more stable than either of them. 99% of the time user error or problems with badly programmed third party software and drivers are the source of problems.

" Why anyone would use a computer that can't do away with junk mail or Web pop-ups is beyond me.

Which computer are you talking about? Any computer can block junk mail or pop ups.

Macs cost more? And a Jaguar costs more than a beat-up Ford. Your point being ...?

Macs do cost more for less. You can get a PC just as stable, with more features, which runs faster with more memory and a larger hardrive, a greater selection of software but with *slightly* less eye candy. Nice case designs on Macs, but if this is important you can get rip-offs for PCs, such as http://www.endpcnoise.com/cgi-bin/e/istyle.html

Personally I think PCs have the advantage at the moment, but we'll wait to see if the rumours are true and we get new super fast Macs in the next few months: http://arstechnica.infopop.net/OpenTopic/page?a=tpc&s=50009562&f=8300945231&m=3470943335

Uh-huh ... We're hearing daily stories about fatal security flaws in the XP system --Microsoft can't put out patches fast enough -- and it also gets low marks for reliability. If you want to look to a neutral source, Consumer Reports consistently ranks Macs higher in terms of user satisfaction and reliability, year after year. Jeez, even Bill Gates has acknowledges that his PC crashes. (Don't forget that Windows 95 crashed when he launched it in front of a huge crowd. He then asked if anyone had a Mac). He even bought his mom an iMac, saying they're easier to use (http://www.thenetworkadministrator.com/MacDiary/MacOS.asp).
I once quit a great job because the PCs -- all of them -- kept crashing or freezing up. I had no choice; I couldn't get any work done. Whenever I complained, someone would shrug their shoulders and say that computers aren't always reliable. No, just PCs aren't reliable! Happily, I am now at a magazine where everyone uses Macs and no one ever has a problem with them.
My comment about the junk mail and pop-ups was a reference to the built-in features of Apple's OSX mail application and Safari browser (the best and fastest browser ever, if you ask me). A friend of mine, who uses a PC running XP, recently switched his e-mail address because he was getting too much junk mail. That's just silly.
You get more for less with a Mac? Do you get software as good as iPhoto, iTunes (don't forget the store; Windows users will have to wait), iDVD and iMovie for free with a PC? Anyone using these applications will tell you they are a marvel of sophistication and ease. Try creating a professional looking DVD on a Wintel machine. Macs leave PCs in the dust.
PCs are great if you want to play games, or if you want to follow the crowd. Sure, Microsoft won the consumer battle long ago, proving P.T. Barnum's universal truth, "There's a sucker born every minute." But if you want a serious machine, you get a Mac.

ZZZZZZZZZ

I look at ILM on a 2K machine all the time. Also XP. I have never encountered this problem.
