So, are these jolly scotsmen the most interesting rock band in the world - or just the least interesting post rock band evah?

Jay K (Jay K), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

some potentially useful discussion to begin with here: MOGWAI - Classic or Dud?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 12:33 (twenty-two years ago)

to be honest i don't especially rate their last album. but they are one of the most impressive sounding live acts i've ever seen.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 12:33 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks, jim. but two years have passed since 'rock action' and their new album is out soon. somebody might have changed their minds or discovered the band since then...

Jay K (Jay K), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 12:41 (twenty-two years ago)

... OR WHAT, fellas???????

Jay K (Jay K), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 12:46 (twenty-two years ago)

i used to be well into them
last time i saw them live i hadn't really been listening to them in ages but they were still great
the live version of helicon one is still one of the best things ever

robin (robin), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to love them aswell. I saw them in the Red Box that time actually robin. Jesus though they were so loud it nearly fucking made me deaf.

I have more mogwai cds than any other band I'd say. I'd probably take a listen to the new album.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 14:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I have the mp3s. I will listen to them. I will hope they play in LA other than at ATP...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 14:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Used to love them, but I never listen to Rock Action. Mogwai Fear Satan is possibly the best thing ever. I will definitely buy the new album - when is it out?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 14:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i heard a new song and its pretty great

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

'was it a Mogwai song?' you ask...to which i reply 'why yes!'

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 14:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Never put out a bad single, albums are all a bit meh.

RickyT (RickyT), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah i was at that redbox thing as well ronan
i went to switch straight after, and on the way in several people thought i had taken pills already (i was stone cold sober) cause i was kind of woozy and slightly out of it after the sonic assualt of the mogwai gig
they've been great the three times i've seen them,i'm annoyed i missed their gig the other day

robin (robin), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

the new one is def kinda meh...can't remember a damn thing about it, but that goes for rock action too.

jess (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Which is the track used on Sex & the City last week (when she splits up with Aidan)? It starts with a Fender Rhodes playing this motif & then the drums etc. kick in. I can't seem to find it on any album.

Jez (Jez), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 16:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't remember any Mogwai except for "Fear Satan" -- it all kinda floats past.

Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, i can't either.
but i'm with jim on the awesome live act. i should be seeing them this weekend, maybe i'll post my comments on monday...

joan vich (joan vich), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Classud. 75% great, 25% poor.

Chewshabadoo (Chewshabadoo), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought Come On Die Young was absolutely the worst album I'd ever heard in my life.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

The new album is really dull and I'm a fan. I liked Rock Action well enough, especially the song in Portugese (or whatever language that was). The new one sounds more like Come on die young: very repetative, songs very similar, doesn't really go anywhere.

Fear Satan is brilliant. Fuck the Curfew and the ep w/ Stanley Kubrick are probably my favorites.

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 18:47 (twenty-two years ago)

The only song by Mogwai that i really really enjoyed was "Mogwai Fear Satan" which is great..to my memory. It was a long one, wasn't it?

Andrzej B. (Andrzej B.), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

never saw them live. i used to listen to the first four songs off CODY quite a bit. "Summer" was another great song, but pretty much everything else is dog food. Rather mediocre, in my opinion, but maybe a concert would change my mind.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

The new album was played in full on XFM last night. They had 2 of them in the studio "explaining" the album, although they didn't explain why it was quite boring and NOT NEARLY LOUD ENOUGH. I listen to Mogwai to have my ears lacerated. This was not done last night.

Nick H, Wednesday, 21 May 2003 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually don't rate Young Team very highly aside from of course MFS. I worship CODY and Rock Action both, looking forward to the new yin.

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 23:32 (twenty-two years ago)

the only 2 tracks i like on young team are tracy and (like Leee) MFS.

the EPs have been much more up my alley.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

There's a lot of love here for Fear Satan.

It's the song that I will play when my friends and I emerge from the bomb shelters to create our savage, clan-based agrarian-and-swordfighting-in-kilts empire of darkness.

Michael Stuchbery (Mikey Bidness), Wednesday, 21 May 2003 23:41 (twenty-two years ago)

tracy is great as well
helicon one remains their finest hour though

robin (robin), Thursday, 22 May 2003 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

for some bizarre reason I've never heard CODY despite having thrashed Young Team, Rock Action & the s/t EP (bah, we don't get EP+2 over here grumble grumble).

one of my favourite joshblog entries - josh using reynolds' "how do you write a history of a culture that is fundamentally amnesiac?" & talking about Mogwai.

Ess Kay (esskay), Thursday, 22 May 2003 01:44 (twenty-two years ago)

"Mogwai Fear Satan" is *way* overrated, if you ask me. The stuff that no-one mentions is gorgeous... "Katrien" off of _Young Team_, "Stanley Kubrick" from _EP+2_, pretty much all of the tracks with vocals, _Ten Rapid_ -- a compilation of their early stuff. They strike a chord with me that few bands manage to do.

Clarke B., Thursday, 22 May 2003 04:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah Helicon One is class.

I also liked Ex-Cowboy alot. I can't remember the names of the other songs. Ten Rapid was a great CD.

Ronan (Ronan), Thursday, 22 May 2003 12:33 (twenty-two years ago)

"Mogwai Fear Satan" is *way* overrated, if you ask me

You're an alien to me. *sniff* ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 22 May 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Dud.

hstencil, Thursday, 22 May 2003 15:57 (twenty-two years ago)

CODY and Young Team never really captivated me.
Rock Action, on the other hand, I like quite a bit. The more varied palette does them well, I think (Gruff Rhys singing in Welsh! Sean O'Hagan on banjo!). Haven't heard anything else.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 22 May 2003 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

(or whatever language that was).

Welsh.

mei (mei), Thursday, 22 May 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, as far as earlier stuff, for me 10 Rapid >> YT even taking MFS n2 acct.

Leee (Leee), Friday, 23 May 2003 00:11 (twenty-two years ago)

My enjoyment of their live shows has increased in proportion to the forgettability of the studio albums. The only album of theirs I have is Young Team (and am not all that interested in the new one), but I can't wait to see them.

Chris Barrus (Chris Barrus), Friday, 23 May 2003 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Aww, sheesh Ned! ;-) I just meant that it's hard for me to believe that some people only seem to like "MFS" -- especially when there are so, so many songs to love.

Clarke B., Friday, 23 May 2003 03:09 (twenty-two years ago)

three weeks pass...
my brother picked the new one up today. quite good, actually, and i've never been a big fan. probably their best work to date. i'm actually more a fan of their quiet moments, rather than the ear-bleeding stuff, so this album is more up my street. great opening track.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 13 June 2003 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i successfully pissed off 2 members of mogwai by uploading three tracks off their new album to a filesharing site that they hang about on. i rather liked the album.

frenchbloke (frenchbloke), Saturday, 14 June 2003 06:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Fantastic live band, never cease to astound me onstage, albums less reliable but the new one's bloody fantastic as (ahem) vaguely alluded to here.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Saturday, 14 June 2003 08:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I heard a bunch of Rock Action tonight and actually enjoyed it. This puzzles me even more than Oasis. I don't know if they got better or if I went insane.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 03:14 (twenty-two years ago)

frenchbloke - did you further piss them off by pointing out their complete hypocrisy?

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 03:16 (twenty-two years ago)

They got better.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 08:06 (twenty-two years ago)

They were always better.

Leee (Leee), Wednesday, 18 June 2003 19:11 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
God Bless the Scottish Guitar Army

rockaction (rockaction), Friday, 18 February 2005 05:04 (twenty-one years ago)
