So this awful song/video all my friends are freaking out over demonstrates only part of what I hate about the SF glitch scene

what is it you hate about it? i'll be honest and i haven't followed one bit of dubstep. i've heard bits of some of the post dilla/flying lotus type stuff and a friend gave me some mount kimble. i like it enough to not turn off, but not enough to search out. it's funny you resurrected this thread instead of something more current because i've been feeling all of this stuff is just the '10's IDM. also, is this scene really that huge in SF? there's a primarily dubstep store around the corner from my house (in sf) that i just don't understand. it has to be a drug front or dude does tons of mail order because there's no way that store ever has anyone in it. but the guy in the store told me that SF is the biggest maker & buyer of dubstep in the country. blew my mind. is it because of burning man?
― jaxon, Thursday, 19 August 2010 00:58 (fifteen years ago)
funny im from la and that sound has blown up there to epic proportions so i always thought that dubstep/glitch hop was bigger there. but yeah apparently the burning man contingent is way into it. which i always thought was kind of weird, i always associated the music burning man peeps like to be post-rave corny dance music. but i guess its like some weird hybrid of corny ethnic dance music thats tranced out but w dubstep elements ?
― oscar, Thursday, 19 August 2010 01:07 (fifteen years ago)
funny, i thought all that flying lotus stuff was huge in LA. at least a ton of the in this thread (more on the "black" r&b side of the spectrum than the "white" idm side)itt: kinda out there, maybe kinda experimental, maybe kinda pretentious modern r&b
― jaxon, Thursday, 19 August 2010 01:09 (fifteen years ago)
ton of the *stuff* in this thread
― jaxon, Thursday, 19 August 2010 01:10 (fifteen years ago)
or did you mean blew up there as in LA?
― jaxon, Thursday, 19 August 2010 01:11 (fifteen years ago)
oh yeah the flying lotus and all the offshoots was just gaining traction when i moved here to sf. this was a few years ago. now its completely blown up there and its a *scene*, you could easily find 3-5 dubstep/glitch hop nights there a week. what i found surprising as well tho is that the burning man contingent picked up on that sound. the people that are into that sound in la are nothing like burners at all
― oscar, Thursday, 19 August 2010 01:20 (fifteen years ago)
that said i dont find the sound that exciting, but thats probably because im old and i went through my idm phase in the early to mid 90's. i just hear alot of this sound as like u said the idm of the 10's with new noises, more bass etc. its cool, nothing to get up in arms about, just kind of *there". that said one of my younger cousins goes to the la clubs and he describes it as very punk rock and kind of agro in its vibe.

One Word Extinguisher is a fucking classic. It's aged very well.

I worked in a pretty good dance record store in Austin and I can tell you that we sold a shitload of dubstep vinyl over the last few years. Around 2006 the dance vinyl game was more open and a lot of different genres sold well on vinyl. Once the download thing and Serato really got going, dubstep, classic dance reissues, and deep house were three main genres of new retail vinyl that still sold well. Dubstep sold the best out of the three genres.
It also helps that Austin had possibly the first really big dubstep scene in the US. There were regular nights with strong attendance in 2006.

(Also, I not bringing that up to start a pissing match. I mentioned it because if it was that big in Austin, I can only imagine how much bigger it is in SF...)

idm of 2010 sounds accurate, and prob explains why i like the beat scene/new dubsteff stuff so much. it's so much more banging and interesting than the idm i listened to in the late '90s/earlys '00s though.

sorry for the hit and run.
when i talk about "SF glitch" i'm talking about a dancefloor-oriented sound that overlaps with the FlyLo crowd, and with dubstep, but isn't identical to either. (i like a lot of brainfeeder stuff, and lot of dubstep.) includes artists like R/D, Rodman, Glitch Mob. (oscar, a lot of the glitch-hop my SF friends love would NOT go down well at Low End Theory.) i should admit that part of my problem is that my SF friends are a tightly-knit group of DJs and producers who all support each other. that means i always end up hearing the same shiz at their parties.
the clip I used wasn't the best illustration but it has some of the characteristics that i hate:
- overused trope of shifting from "swirly / pretty" to "slamming / glitchy"- every track has to be *intense*. this leads to a kind of po-faced cheese/corniness factor.
anyway here's an excellent example of the kind of track that will make my friends dance like maniacs while pushing me right off the dancefloor (the video is precious, as well):
http://www.vimeo.com/11831845
so tedious.
as far as your question "is it burning man?" yeah, basically, and the parties that BM attendees throw the rest of the year. glitch-hop actually peaked a few years ago with this crew, some of the momentum has shifted to dubstep, although there's a lot of controversy in the group about that.

Glitch Mob
how are they? they're playing here tonight and i was thinking of going.
― emotional radiohead whatever (Jordan), Friday, 20 August 2010 17:01 (fifteen years ago)
i only ever imagined that music like that got played in dance clubs in action/sci-fi movies
― gnarly sceptre, Friday, 20 August 2010 17:03 (fifteen years ago)
I'd skip it Jordan. Even my friends think they've gone downhill.
― LA river flood (lukas), Friday, 20 August 2010 17:05 (fifteen years ago)
otoh, they're from LA, have a different sound ... I haven't heard them in years. just biased really.
