Introduction - Sean Thomas

Dear ilXors:

Sean Thomas here, 34 (for two whole days now), from San Francisco via DC. Been reading this wonderful board since last fall, but until now have contributed nothing. I'm an off-again on-again music journo in my spare time, most recently in the on position for Splendid. (George, those last few reviews are almost ready, honest.) The rest of the time, I tries to get paid.

Listening tendencies vary each week, often dictated by the vagaries of Usenet: recently I've been listening to the New Pornographers religiously, with binges of Metro Area, Adult. and Bonobo for variety. I also dabble a little with music on the PC, but -- unlike Electric Six -- I've found that it's quite easy to ignore my techno.

Anyway, after months spent lurking but not adding my two cents, I've finally concluded that, by taking action and getting a username now, I will open up vast new areas of future procrastination. And isn't that what's really important?

So hi, then.

Welcom, Sean. I'm in DC, too (if that's what you meant).

hullo, Sean Thomas!

...what d'you think, will t.A.T.u. win Eurovision then? :-)
(just teasin')

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 22 May 2003 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, what *did* I mean by that, anyway? I'm originally from DC, but now live in SF. (Sorry, still recovering from the birthday.)

How's DC these days, anyway? I trust the Black Cat is still open?

Sean Thomas (sgthomas), Thursday, 22 May 2003 20:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Hi t\'\'t (if that is your real name) -- what I know about Eurovision can be summed up in four letters, two of them "A" and the other two "B". It warms my heart to see t.A.t.U. upholding the acronym tradition, but other than that I'm blissfully unaware.

Still, on principle: go Russian lesbians!

Black Cat's still open! And the 9:30 Club has moved! And Marion Barry's in the hospital! Because he's a crackhead!

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Thursday, 22 May 2003 20:19 (twenty-two years ago)

YAAAAH! Marion's in the hospital? This I did not know! Dude needs help, for real. I'll be flying my dashiki at half-mast, in support.

The 9:30 move you speak of, this is to U Street? Or somewhere newer? I'm familiar with both the '80s-vintage firetrap on F Street (I think some of my old T-shirts still retain the residual funk of that place) and the mid-'90s upgrade to the former WUST concert hall (which tickled me, since I used to help friends throw raves there a few years earlier, after years of disuse).

Sean Thomas (sgthomas), Thursday, 22 May 2003 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

V Street, actually, but yeah. The neighborhood is just as crummy, but as for the venue, let's just put it this way: Great White won't be playing there anytime soon.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Thursday, 22 May 2003 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Right, V St., thx. Sorry to hear the neighborhood's still crummy, when I left in '97 it seemed like maybe things were picking up, what with State of the Union and other U St. Cardozo hotspots. I'll be back there for a visit next week, must check it out firsthand.

But clearly we're ignoring the larger issue here: where *will* Great White be playing? Hammerjacks? Jaxx? (The whole "jack" thing re: hard-rockin' mid-Atlantic nightclubs has always mystified me...)

Sean Thomas (sgthomas), Thursday, 22 May 2003 21:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Welcome, Sean!

You can't really say the Black Cat has moved. More like, it drunkenly slouched a few stores sideways on the same block.

Wow, this is my first ILM post in months. Can't ever seem to find the time to get here. Hullo, DC'sters.
