I really wanna write for this.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 22 May 2003 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I wrote for it in the early-to-mid 90's in the Mark Petracca/Chris Nadler years.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 22 May 2003 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Their website has been up for about a year now. I wrote to them last fall asking for their writer's guidelines and they said that they were going to be publishing again this summer. Which means, according to that article linked above, that they're right on schedule.

Christine "Green Leafy Dragon" Indigo (cindigo), Thursday, 22 May 2003 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

I truly hope this happens for real. God do we ever need this magazine back, even if it's only a shadow of its former self.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Thursday, 22 May 2003 23:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I seriously think I would fit right in with a shadow of it's former self.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 22 May 2003 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Why would this magazine coming back, in any form, be so significant?

What're the expectations or hopes of people as to the new CREEM?

This is an honest question.

H (Heruy), Thursday, 22 May 2003 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

the last thing the world needs is another "rock is back" magazine, especially one aping, consciously or not, some played concept of "gonzo rockwrite"

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 22 May 2003 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I owe a shitload to CREEM circa 80-81. But it's over. Isn't it?

Sean (Sean), Thursday, 22 May 2003 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

CREEM owes a shitload to ME!!!

In fact, I hope they pay me the $4000 they've owed me for 15 years!

chuck, Thursday, 22 May 2003 23:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm in the same boat as Chuck, but to the much
less outrageous sum of $250.
It seems likely the new Creem will miserably
fail to resurrect its legendary aura (forget
the Bangs/Marsh years; this won't even match
the DiMartino/Kordosh/Holdship era). You
just can't let a Lester Bangs write a 1000-word
review of Eno's Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy)
in these times of blurby reviews and minuscule
attention spans.

Dave Segal (Da ve Segal), Friday, 23 May 2003 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, but you could make a much more badass blurb then what's currently out there.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Friday, 23 May 2003 01:03 (twenty-two years ago)

(Hi Dave)

Yeah, I know that Robert Matheu has been working on getting it started again... although maybe when he realizes they owe Chuck $4000 he'll reconsider.

The head graphic designer at the Metro Times was a photographer for Creem back in the day. I once asked him if he'd tell me any old stories (it came up cuz he mentioned that the Gold Dollar was a few blocks away from the old Creem offices). His response was, "uhhhhhhh.... I don't think I remember much from those years."

Aaron W (Aaron W), Friday, 23 May 2003 01:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I could be less excited about this. I have a feeling that it will be deathly dull and do not look forward to reading it one little bit. Far more interesting would be a NEW magazine looking to the future of music (while, yes, still having a knowledgeable perspective on its past), rather than a rehashed, resurrected version of an old rockist institution. Strikes me that Bangs-era Creem worked simply as it was a product of its time. Those times are long gone. However, I'm willing to be proved wrong.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 23 May 2003 09:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm just hoping the new Creem has somewhat of the same ballsy attitude of the old Creem.
In particular, a record review section that doesn't give a shit who it offends.

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Friday, 23 May 2003 15:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Um... I'm not so sure we need that. Sounds like a direct path to record reviews that are snarky, self-serving, mean-spirited, and useless to the reader. And we already have Pitchfork.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 23 May 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

is that the same Jazzbo?

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Friday, 23 May 2003 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

"the mention [by Tony Reay] of the Sex Pistols is an odd choice, since they were as much a marketing creation as any boy band today. The Sex Pistols were managed by Malcolm McLaren, the ex-manager of the New York Dolls. McLaren wanted to create a band that was as rebellious and anarchic as the bands he saw in New York. How exactly does that differ from the creation of N'Sync and the Backstreet Boys by Orlando über-manager Lou Pearlman?"

* warning warning * brain in danger of falling out * must avoid consequences of obviously correct line of logic * must start new paragraph *

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 23 May 2003 16:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I get a lot of use out of mean-spirited record reviews!

Jazzbo (jmcgaw), Friday, 23 May 2003 17:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Fucking idiots.

Jerry (Jerry), Friday, 23 May 2003 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

(The people putting the magazine together I mean, not you gallant posters. Still, what can you expect from Americans?)

Jerry (Jerry), Friday, 23 May 2003 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, Ned

Jerry (Jerry), Friday, 23 May 2003 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

What next? The Beatles reform?

Jerry (Jerry), Friday, 23 May 2003 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, this sounds silly. What's the point to it all? Forget beating a dead horse, this is like beating the dead horse and then putting a wig and fancy dress on it and pretending it is Marilyn Monroe.

Nicole (Nicole), Friday, 23 May 2003 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Hahaha

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 23 May 2003 18:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Friday, 23 May 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 23 May 2003 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

and it would not amaze me at all if there were at least two shibuya-kei bands fighting it out for that band name right now.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Friday, 23 May 2003 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

is there any basis to my hunch that those of you making with the "classic rockist anchronism/lester bangs yada yada/gonzo bla bla yawn" noises aren't real familiar w. back-in-the-day CREEM? i mean yeah yr probably right & it'll probably be some dumm "ROCK IS BACK/DISCO SUCKS" embarrassment but i could totally imagine something with guys like miccio writing for it being really in the spirit without being a "shadow of its former self" or even - hey - ROCKIST. yeah yr probably right tho.BUT FUCK YOU ANYWAY!!!!!, no just kiddin.

duane, Tuesday, 27 May 2003 10:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I am pretty familiar with the old back-in-the-day Creem, having something of a fetish for music journalism and spending an unnatural amount of time collecting/reading the stuff. I just reckon it will be dull and from what I've read about of the new Creem's statements of intent, I stand by what I said - so: fuck you, too, Duane ;-)

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

they've pretty much acknowledged they're in it for the logo, this thing'll be on newstands two years tops. and only cuz it ain't been linked already - dem's were da dayz

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 13:44 (twenty-two years ago)

hmmm yeah dave having now looked @ their site i'm tending to think you're correct, too bad, oh well

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Seeing R.Crumb designed t-shirts at Urban Outfitters would be a good thing.

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, Ned

Er, uh? Sorry, just noticed this! No worries. Nicole's point is the best and I have nothing more to add.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:35 (twenty-two years ago)
