Marilyn Manson at the top of the charts -- wtf?

unexpected/unhyped comebacks always interest me...when someone whose star had been fading for a while suddenly experiences a big spike in sales...MM's last album debuted at #13, and now this one's #1...what happened in the past couple years that provided this groundswell? any thoughts? theories?

Al (sitcom), Friday, 23 May 2003 04:48 (twenty-two years ago)

slow sales week.

hstencil, Friday, 23 May 2003 04:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Exactly.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Friday, 23 May 2003 04:54 (twenty-two years ago)

His star turn in Bowling for Columbine.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Friday, 23 May 2003 04:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Cheerleaders going "Be! Obscene! Be! Be! Obscene!" in his new single, of course. He was going straight to number one as soon as that idea was committed to tape.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Friday, 23 May 2003 05:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh hell yeah.

maria b (maria b), Friday, 23 May 2003 05:51 (twenty-two years ago)

The high school kids love him no matter what, and after Columbine and, and -not least - his mutual Michael Moore blow job in Bowling For Columbine, lots of middle- to highbrow English teachers found out that he is actually a pretty smart guy. Music's pretty good, too.

That, and his cover of 'Tainted Love'.

Jay K (Jay K), Friday, 23 May 2003 11:22 (twenty-two years ago)

He may be intelligent, but he's got a little horny Fred Durst inside of him that he's not afraid to show off.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Friday, 23 May 2003 11:38 (twenty-two years ago)

lots of middle- to highbrow English teachers found out that he is actually a pretty smart guy.

So they're the one who've bought his record to the number one slot?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Friday, 23 May 2003 11:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Odd, his Bowling For Columbine performance decidedly lowered my opinion of the man (and of Michael Moore, but that's another thing) - he's basically playing Mr. Obvious there, and his now-apparent complete lack of conviction towards what he's doing doesn't help either (OK lots of people already knew Manson is a calculating businessman, but dude, at least try to make an effort!). It's all a huge cop-out, "oh you see, I'm a normal guy, really". Haven't heard the new album though...

Siegbran (eofor), Friday, 23 May 2003 11:49 (twenty-two years ago)

slightly off-topic, sorry... but i'm curious: Siegbran, why has Bowling... lowered your opinion of M Moore? I (still) haven't seen it, but I've heard nothing but praise (maybe that should be a warning) for that film. (if the answer's a bit too elaborate for this thread, send it to me by e-mail, if you want)

willem (willem), Friday, 23 May 2003 11:57 (twenty-two years ago)

It was a great film .. over-the-top, hyperbolic, unfair & conspiratorial at times .. but it's got to be entertaining ... The point is still made.

dave225 (Dave225), Friday, 23 May 2003 12:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Be Obscene= The vocal equivalent of those overdone handclaps.

nathalie (nathalie), Friday, 23 May 2003 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Marilyn Manson - God, that Tainted Love cover is shocking.

H ereminds me of the token punky goth in a John Hughes movie.... embarrassing in a Cyndi Lauper kinda way.

russ t, Friday, 23 May 2003 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

You should definitely see it, it is highly entertaining and Moore does get his point across in a very clear way, but once you think about it, his point isn't that interesting to begin with. And I cringed in the theater at the points where film gets too "easy" and moralistic (that's a given with Moore, but still), but he really disappointed me with all the little things (suggestive editing, his smugness), and it really left me feeling manipulated. The same feeling I got from Bashir's Michael Jackson interview, really - I don't have any more or less sympathy for his subject than I had before, but I do dislike the messenger more.

Siegbran (eofor), Friday, 23 May 2003 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

lots of middle- to highbrow English teachers found out that he is actually a pretty smart guy.

Yes, them and the high school and college kids. Together, a pretty overwhelming force.

Jay K (Jay K), Friday, 23 May 2003 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

thanx Siegbran, i see your point. i second yr opinion on the bashir's "interview".

willem (willem), Friday, 23 May 2003 13:26 (twenty-two years ago)

i would love to kick him in his prosthetic vagina.

Chris V. (Chris V), Friday, 23 May 2003 13:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been waiting for the opportunity to mention this, "mOBSCENE" is an awesome single. So junky, so obvious, and it makes me go totally nuts every time I hear it.

Sean (Sean), Saturday, 24 May 2003 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyone see him on Letterman?

"So, you wanna perform a song?"
"No, I don't have time for that."

Then he went on to talk about drinking paint and the like. It put me in a bad mood.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 24 May 2003 00:31 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a protest vote against the very existence of Blinksum 18421

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Saturday, 24 May 2003 02:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm with siegbran re: michael moore but he slipped into borderline exploitation, opportunism, and self-parody a long time ago.

i haven't seen bowling for columbine for that reason.

manson's self-parody is something i don't mind at all, though. i think his 'tainted love' cover is hot.

brian badword (badwords), Saturday, 24 May 2003 02:45 (twenty-two years ago)

It better be. I still haven't forgiven him for his Eurythmics cover.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Saturday, 24 May 2003 02:48 (twenty-two years ago)

embarrassing in a Cyndi Lauper kinda way.

So he's embarassing in the way that isn't actually embarassing at all but rather totally fucking cool?

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Saturday, 24 May 2003 10:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I think this has the definitive word on Manson. Marilyn manson goes door to door trying to shock people.

BTW I love the single, but without the cheerleaders letting a bit of light and yes cheer in, it'd be a bit of a manky dirge.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Saturday, 24 May 2003 11:28 (twenty-two years ago)

It's fucked up, but I thought Cold at #3 and Alkaline Trio at #20 were even weirder.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 24 May 2003 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

It's fucked up, but I thought Cold at #3 and Alkaline Trio at #20 were even weirder.
-- Anthony Miccio (anthonymicci...), May 24th, 2003.

Why? Crappy rock is always on the charts.

David Allen, Saturday, 24 May 2003 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, but anonymously crappy and previously unsuccessful like Cold (I guess that hideously misogynist but slightly Weezery "Stupid Girl" song must be taking off)? or a band on Vagrant making the top 20? I don't think emo has ever done that well on the charts before. Dashboard's Unplugged didn't make the top 20, I think. It's pretty unusual.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 24 May 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

here in NZ it was dissapointing to see our "used to be good, now owned by the industry, rolling stone type music mag" do an advance story on manson, which preceeding the album and for a place like NZ seemed totally out of nowhere
but there he was this, "controversial" but "really normal guy with a message about teen suicide .." commanded the lead article, presumably to both arouse the interest of the kids and get the approving nod from the parents (Mojo magazine had him recently quoted as saying [pink floyd was sacred, nobody should be allowed to cover a pink floyd song] and noting that he plays brick wall part 2 for the kids/ audience before his live appearances)
that's how the American record industry operates even in NZ, in a a calculatedly targeted way
yeah, he wasn't such a big deal before here, but maybe the kids need someone to remind them of the sanctity of their lives in this new climate, to be their good old uncle punk

george gosset (gegoss), Saturday, 24 May 2003 17:43 (twenty-two years ago)

marilyn rules. i'm glad someones keeping glam rock alive.

di smith (lucylurex), Saturday, 24 May 2003 23:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Didn't he finish with the glam rock thing 5 years ago?

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 24 May 2003 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

depends on your definition of glam.

di smith (lucylurex), Saturday, 24 May 2003 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

there is nothing embarrassing about Cyndi Lauper whatsoever: she rox0r.

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Sunday, 25 May 2003 03:22 (twenty-two years ago)

So does Manson, so it makes sense.

Ally (mlescaut), Sunday, 25 May 2003 03:29 (twenty-two years ago)

him and tom tomorrow got those reptile skulls

James Blount (James Blount), Sunday, 25 May 2003 05:02 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, and (answering the thread q) ditto to slow sales week. in three weeks it's out of the top twenty.

James Blount (James Blount), Sunday, 25 May 2003 05:03 (twenty-two years ago)

hes all fat now

chaki (chaki), Sunday, 25 May 2003 07:56 (twenty-two years ago)

he's always had paunch

James Blount (James Blount), Sunday, 25 May 2003 08:37 (twenty-two years ago)

hence the girdle obv.

James Blount (James Blount), Sunday, 25 May 2003 08:37 (twenty-two years ago)

he's really fat though

chaki (chaki), Sunday, 25 May 2003 09:13 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, hence not even bothering with the girdle anymore

James Blount (James Blount), Sunday, 25 May 2003 09:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Recent picture anyone?

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Sunday, 25 May 2003 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I bought it, and I am neither a college kid nor a teacher... hmmm... It's not bad, but somehow I think it falls between the glam feel of Mechanical Animals and the grim darkness of the next two, and doesn't quite succeed, being neither dark nor glamorous enough. But I've only listened to it once. The cheerleaders on mobscene are genius. :)

Zora (Zora), Sunday, 25 May 2003 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Did anybody see the interview in Blender? Was that "our" Lynskey who did it?
I have questions about it (it was my first time reading Blender).

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 26 May 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

No I don't think they are the same Lynskey... or at least i hope not
