"Suede announce 'aggressive' new album

Suede's next studio album will be more aggressive than the last, according to singer Brett Anderson.

The band have already started work on the new LP, although a greatest hits compilation will be released ahead of the brand new record.

Anderson said the new material is less song-based than their 2002 album A New Morning.

Speaking on the band's official website, he said: "We're spending a lot of time working on tracks that sound nothing like traditional Suede.

"There's a kind of electronic reggae thing called Attitude, an insane metallic robot march called Golden Gun and a punky thrash called I Don't Need A High.

"I needed to write something as soulful as A New Morning at the time but now that's out of my system and it's time to release the beast."

As well as an appearance at Glastonbury on June 27, the band also have an authorised biography on the way this year, written by long-term associate David Barnett.

'Electronic Reggae Thing' - never a v. gd sign...

Andrew L (Andrew L), Friday, 23 May 2003 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

somebody name something that could conceivably be worse than suede doing "electronic reggae"

dan (dan), Friday, 23 May 2003 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

besides U2 doing electronic reggae

dan (dan), Friday, 23 May 2003 15:42 (twenty-two years ago)

....maybe they'll get UB40 in to do some backing tracks....

russ t, Friday, 23 May 2003 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

An aggresive Suede album? That'll be one than can just about fight its way out of a wet paper bag sustaining only a small selection of broken limbs, then.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Friday, 23 May 2003 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

You have to wonder why they'd even bother at this point.

£££££

I read this news last week and felt fear.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 23 May 2003 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Whom do they expect to woo with their proverbial 'bold new direction' (insert hackneyed Spinal Tap Mk II 'jazz odyssey' joke here)? Suede fans probably just want to hear more stuff like the first album. It sounds doomed from the get-go.

I'd really like it to be good, but "electronic reggae thing" gnnn.... that doesn't sound hopeful. Still, I go into town these lats few days & all i see is posters for stereophonics' new single, entitled "madame helga", i mean wtf? worst single title ever or what, fux0rz!!??1??

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 23 May 2003 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

does this mean all the songs will sound like 'elephant man'? except with more of a reggae vibe, obv.

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 23 May 2003 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

The fact that Brett used the phrase 'soulful' worries me; in whatever context.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Friday, 23 May 2003 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

They've lost it, but that's been true for a while, hasn't it.

Was A New Morning as bad as everybody said? It was the first Suede album that I totally ignored...I have a soft spot for a fair portion of Head Music (its lows are unforgiveable, but "Everything Will Flow" is lovely) but the word on A New Morning seemed so dire that I completely ignored it. New direction? I'd say "why not," but I don't see B.A.'s lyrical fixations working in an, umm, reggae context. Oh man this could be awful, couldn't it.

I finally heard ANM, John, and it's...polite. Calm. Pleasant. Ultimately just sorta there.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 24 May 2003 07:44 (twenty-two years ago)

ANM aint so bad. Lost in TV, Oceans, Untitled... Morning are really good and there's a couple of good pop tunes (Obsessions, Beautiful Loser) but (sigh) in comparison to the Butler-period stuff it is a weak, and it's not as good as anything on Coming Up. It's mostly welcome after Head Music though, which (Indian Strings aside) was pitiful.

start the bernard butler-back-in-the-fold rumours *now*.
over on the official site brett has been
making noises about being sorry he left
and bernard has already done likewise (as reported in
the nme last year).

glastonbury main stage on a friday early evening
might actually be a good place for the reunion :

'erm...we last played here 10 years ago in 1993 on the small stage...'
(huge cheer)
'i wonder how many of you were here then'
(huger cheer)
'erm...it's been nearly as long since we played with our
special guest...'
(audible crowd gasps)
'...ladies and gentleman...BERNARD BUTLER !!!...'
(general fainting, pandemonium)

could happen. if only for the encore.

piscesboy, Saturday, 24 May 2003 10:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Didn't Suede already do a couple of "electronic reggae" songs? 'Whipsnade' and another b-side that had lyrics about "licking the bag"? They were both all right.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Saturday, 24 May 2003 11:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Mozz, headlining the Glasto stage after Suede: "The last time I played with these people, they weren't BALD...but neither was I...ladies and gentlemen, Andy Rourke and Mike Joyce..."

(confused crowd waits for Marr)

"...and Slash from Guns 'n' Roses!"

(band launches into "Moon River," world explodes)
