"Come Live With Me," "Let's All Make A Bomb," "And That's No Lie" -- Heaven 17 owns this thread.

stevem (blueski), Friday, 23 May 2003 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm tempted to add the Sisters of Mercy's "This Corrosion," but the Jim Steinman factor kinda takes that to another level...

robin (robin), Friday, 23 May 2003 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Berlin, "Take My Breath Awayyyyyyyyyyyy"

(I once fell in love with a married woman based on our mutual admiration for this song and its flatulent prog bass-synth whomps. Sadly, she liked the song better than she liked me.)

Alphaville - "Forever Young"
Ultravox - "Vienna"

Hold that thought. Hstencil had a theory the other day that VH's "Dancing in the Street" was more "postpunk" than the Rapture et al. I'm not really sure if that's true but it got me thinking about the breadth of styles DLR-era VH drew from (and no, I don't just mean cuz of "Ice Cream Man" and "Take Your Whiskey Home"). I was inspired to post "Jump" on this thread because of the recent "Disco Rock" thread, where I countered that "Little Dreamer" was more purely disco (think: the slow strut of the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack) than "Jump" (which applies the bombast of Flashdance-y hi-NRG to a prog-metal context).

Anyone wanna add to this?

robin (robin), Friday, 23 May 2003 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

"I'll Wait" from 1984 is better than Jump and is a delightfully bombastic piece of synth-pop.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Friday, 23 May 2003 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Re: Van Halen - the one-two punch of "Sunday Afternoon in the Park" and "One Foot Out the Door" at the end of Fair Warning is probably the most bombastic synth-based recording VH ever made.

Paul Cox (paul cox), Friday, 23 May 2003 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm amazed nobody has mentioned Propaganda's "A Secret Wish" which is surely thee uber-bombast synthpop rekkid of all time!!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 23 May 2003 21:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave Q to thread dammit! All this VH talk and no him.

Europe's "The Final Countdown" could sorta be a real sick candidate here.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 23 May 2003 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

It's hard to pick just one Simple Minds tune, but "Someone Somewhere in Summertime" has gotta be one of their most bombastic (which would place it high in the runnin' for most bombastic worldwide).

The The's "Giant" is right up there, too.

Sean Thomas (sgthomas), Friday, 23 May 2003 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Murray Head "One Night In Bangkok"

Millar (Millar), Friday, 23 May 2003 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)
