P!nk - the new single from Charlie's Angels 2

Of course the inimitable William Orbit produced it, so most of the magic on this track is him getting all space-disco as he is inclined to do. The man is fucking brilliant. I was surprised how much I liked P!nk's lyrics, though. I normally find her music boring or annoying, but this tune! It's going to be fucking huge. Or it should be. Finally 2003 has a pop tune worth a shit.

Millar (Millar), Friday, 23 May 2003 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

And finally P!nk has one in the first place. No wait, "Get This Party Started" was good... (hides from Tim and Sterling and whoever else). Orbit, eh? The man will never die...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 23 May 2003 22:02 (twenty-two years ago)

What's it called?

slutsky (slutsky), Friday, 23 May 2003 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

"Feel Good Time" or some shit

Millar (Millar), Friday, 23 May 2003 22:14 (twenty-two years ago)

William Orbit producing Pink? oooh me feel pain now, tho i think i will trust Mayday Millar's judgement on this

stevem (blueski), Friday, 23 May 2003 22:25 (twenty-two years ago)

there's already outrage from the Terrascope crowd about how brazenly this track samples Spirit's "Fresh Garbage" - without credit. there's talk of informing Randy California's widow about it, hopefully tying up the release of C.A.2. with a protracted legal battle. heh. hippies.

summerslastsound (summerslastsound), Friday, 23 May 2003 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

first listen impression - "Pure Shores" on PCP! (nb my entire knowledge of PCP is/does is the "gang on PCP" quip from the principal explaining away the vampire attack to the parents in the, uh, second season of Buffy.)

Ess Kay (esskay), Friday, 23 May 2003 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, I knew I'd heard that before but I couldn't put my finger on it. Thanks sundar!

Millar (Millar), Friday, 23 May 2003 23:41 (twenty-two years ago)

or summerslastsound, I can't read today, WTF

Millar (Millar), Friday, 23 May 2003 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

they sample "fresh garbage" w/o credit = death is too good for them.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Friday, 23 May 2003 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

No wait, "Get This Party Started" was good...

It was good. Very good production. Nice crispy bass. Satisfyingly goofy.

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Saturday, 24 May 2003 00:10 (twenty-two years ago)

It was horrid. Tired bassline. Weak hook. Insipid boasting that wasn't even funny.

Millar (Millar), Saturday, 24 May 2003 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't heard this but I heard that Beck wrote it.

teeny (teeny), Saturday, 24 May 2003 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Sounds like it, I wouldn't be surprised. I like the song. I need to stay away from P!nk videos because they stink and can ruin the songs. I can't wait until the day Dave Meyers cannot find work.

amateurist (amateurist), Saturday, 24 May 2003 03:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Millar and Teeny are OTM

A Nairn (moretap), Saturday, 24 May 2003 03:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Nairn is fired for obfuscation.

Millar (Millar), Saturday, 24 May 2003 06:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Beck wrote it + William Orbit produced + sampled Spirit for the hook + P!nk sang it = Who the FUCK ruined this equation? Etc etc. one of these things does not belong!!! FUCKERS.

If William Orbit produced a Beck record I'd die happy. Jesus fucking CHRISTMAS WITH AN X.

This song has officially gone from being one of the highlights of my summer to being just another reminder of how fucked up and shitty the music business is. God Dammit shit ass fuck.

Millar (Millar), Saturday, 24 May 2003 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)

It's still a good record tho' and william orbit produced pure shores for all saints: beyond doubt one of the finest pop records of the past 5 years or so... what's wrong?!?!?!?!?!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Saturday, 24 May 2003 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

What's wrong is now I'm never going to be able to listen to it without thinking how much awesomer it wd be with Beck singing his own words, or just imagining a Beck/Orbit collab. What can I say, I'm a perfectionist.

Millar (Millar), Saturday, 24 May 2003 21:26 (twenty-two years ago)

What's the song called?

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Sunday, 25 May 2003 01:39 (twenty-two years ago)

"Feel Good Time".

(& can I say the less Beck has to do with this, the happier I am? & who the fuck are Spirit?)

Ess Kay (esskay), Sunday, 25 May 2003 02:28 (twenty-two years ago)

one AWESOME-ass pop band from the Sixties. Oh my Lordy you haven't lived til you've heard "I Got a Line On You" or "Uncle Jack."

Evan (Evan), Sunday, 25 May 2003 15:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Yikes, sorry about that Millar. (p.s. wasn't ignoring you on AIM last night; computer mysteriously turned AIM on while I was gone.)

teeny (teeny), Sunday, 25 May 2003 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Sounds okay and all, but it leaves me sort of cold. I've been having a real problem really feeling chart-pop lately, and I don't know what it is. This just sounded like more oh-wow-production stuff with nothing at its core when I heard it (in an admittedly grumpy mood). And yeah yeah having nothing at its core is interesting on some level or whatever but this didn't lack a core interestingly, or something.

Clarke B. (stolenbus), Sunday, 25 May 2003 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Just heard it for the first time on MuchMusic. Fuckin' hot... it'll be massive.

blutroniq (blutroniq), Sunday, 25 May 2003 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Great song. Pink has a fab voice, but it's a rare treat to
hear her on good material like this. Doesn't sound like
a hit song to me, but ya never now.

squirl plise (Squirrel_Police), Monday, 26 May 2003 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

HOLY FUCKING SHIT>>>>> Just downloaded this thing and it is BLAZIN'!

I *love* the Spirit sample, frickin' brilliant. Big, explosive chorus > what's not to like?

If this thing isn't huge I will be shocked.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 30 May 2003 03:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I've just listened to it five times in a row.

Also, I love the whole "Feel Good Time" <- "Real Cool Time" thing.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 30 May 2003 03:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I went to the MuchMusic site and found nowhere to download music; yes I searched for Pink. Downloaded the MP3, and got a corrupt garbled file. I must hear this song!!

Sean (Sean), Friday, 30 May 2003 03:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Sean .. do you have slsk?

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 30 May 2003 06:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Here's the video: http://www.mtv.com/music/video/premiere/pink/

scott m (mcd), Friday, 30 May 2003 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't have slsk because I have a Mac and the version they've developed for Mac doesn't function yet. Also, they video requires you have Real Player... I don't feel like have a bunch of spyware on my machine just to use their crappy software. I know, picky, picky...

Sean (Sean), Friday, 30 May 2003 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

best thing EVAH obv

(NB - i haven't heard it yet)

zebedee (zebedee), Friday, 30 May 2003 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Zebede, you might change your mind when you actually hear it.

This is the ultimate cotton candy single; the first bite was all, "WOW THIS ROCKS!" and subsequent bites were "EURGH HOW MUCH OF THIS SHIT IS LEFT?"

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 30 May 2003 15:28 (twenty-two years ago)

everything about this single sounded great, until i got to the beck part

(nb: i haven't heard it yet)

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 30 May 2003 15:32 (twenty-two years ago)

There's no real "Beck part", actually, besides the lyrics.

squirl plise (Squirrel_Police), Friday, 30 May 2003 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

the 'spend it on our enemies' part was what hooked me, lyricwise. I can't wait to hear this in a club.

Millar (Millar), Friday, 30 May 2003 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Okay I just looked up the soundtrack on Amazon. Tracklisting:

1. Livin' On A Prayer - Bon Jovi
2. Centerfold - The J. Geils Band
3. Working For The Weekend - Loverboy
4. Surfer Girl - The Beach Boys
5. Last Dance - Donna Summer
6. U Can't Touch This - M.C. Hammer
7. Rebel Rebel - David Bowie
8. I Just Want To Be Your Everything - Andy Gibb
9. Thunder Kiss '65 - White Zombie
10. Wild Thing - Tone-Loc
11. Firestarter - Prodigy
12. The Pink Panther Theme - Hollywood Studio Orchestra
13. Flashdance...What A Feeling - Irene Cara
14. Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting - Nickelback feat. Kid Rock

Uh... WTF dude. Color me bewildered and annoyed.

Millar (Millar), Friday, 30 May 2003 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

haha what a great sndtrk!

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 30 May 2003 22:05 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, but where's Pink?!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Friday, 30 May 2003 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

i boldly predict this sndtrk will be better than the film it was compiled for

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 30 May 2003 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah I am hatin' bad on the P!nk lackage there, but there's too many must-haves on that record. I'm probably going to end up getting it just so I can have the J Geils and Loverboy tracks.

Millar (Millar), Friday, 30 May 2003 22:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Both those tracks are available on albums they're practically giving away in bargain bins and thrift shops everywhere.

Sean (Sean), Friday, 30 May 2003 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah well before long they'll be giving away the soundtrack, too

Millar (Millar), Friday, 30 May 2003 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't buy a copy of "Centrefold". It's a great song, unless you own a copy of it, when with each consecutive listen you'll like it less. Just keep it as a twice-a-year treat in shopping stores and whilst surfing classic rock radio stations.
