Who would your ATP lineup be?

Ok, I've been listening to the Sonic Youth curated All Tomorrow's Parties 1.1 CD alot the past couple days, and checking out the developments w/ ATP LA 2003 curated by Matt Groening, of all people. It got me thinking, if I woke up to the phone ringing and someone said, "Mike, we've decided we want you to curate an ATP event" (I guess a music dream come true), who would I choose.

So I pose this question to you. Let's say you were put in that position. Who would you choose? Let's limit it to a max of 15 bands/artists, all must be living or still together. This is also different from your 15 fav bands or even your 15 fav live bands, because it is an "art exhibit" of sorts. Also assume that every band/artist would be overjoyed to have you invite them to such an event and would accept immediately (this is a fantasy, is it not?).

Ok, so I'll start by making my list or at least a rough draft. It's not that original or obscure, but I like it. What's that? You hate it? I suck? Make your own.

Air
The Breeders (Can't get the Pixies, now can I?)
Cheap Trick (What???, yes you head me right: The Trick!!)
Cibo Mato
Devo (They played at Lalapalooza, maybe this is pushing it)
Dora (had to throw a local Memphis Band on there)
Brian Eno (preferably to construct an installation)
The Flaming Lips
Beck Hanson
Kraftwerk (Yes they still perform... every now and then)
Mission of Burma
Papa M
Sonic Youth
Yo La Tengo
and of course myself doing an A/V exhibit on Memphis

Like I said, I'm not picking the most obscure/artsy/music-geeky/whatever bands, most of these have had records that did fairly well. Some are "hip" to like. I don't really care. I'm just building a list that I'd like to hear/see and that fits in with my loose theme.

fuck it, Pelt can back up Willie Nelson. There, that's 15. well it's either that or the Dead C backing up Faith Hill.

scott seward, Monday, 26 May 2003 03:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Interesting responses from all although I seriously disagree with some of the suggestions. Ok, I'll go ahead and be somewhat (out of character) confrontational. Scott - TATU??? But you made up for it with Willie. There's a lot of day I wish I could be in Lukenbach Texas with Waylon and Willie and the boys. And I also disagree with a lot of the (what I like to call) pop-rap choices. I also hate me some cash money somethin' fierce as well as Eminem, etc. so that should be noted as bias. Outkast is officially deemed as a good choice, but I can't help but love the funk that lurks within. I'd add some P-Funk to my list, 'cause there ain't no party.... but it would break from my "concept". Speaking of great live bands I almost added Elvis Costello and The Imposters because I've never in my life seen a show as great as them at the Ryman on Oct. 30th of last year, nor do I expect to ever again. It was a religious experience for me. That's it. I officially add them now that I think about it. It diverts slightly, but thats ok.

And some of you forgot some of the rules. You can't bring a broken up band back from the dead. And you can't bring Beefheart back from wherever he is in the desert. I don't care if you're pulling a satellite hookup, the man has MS or at least that's what I've read. I'd love to have Vliet (born sans van) and Zappa doing some great Hot Rats/Wakka Jawaka era stuff or hell, Lennon doing Plastic Ono Band but it just ain't happening. This is a fantasy that doesn't involve time machines.

Anywho keep 'em comin' if you can. I think this is a fun little exercise in listmaking. It's an odd cross between top X listmaking and mixtape making.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Monday, 26 May 2003 11:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Surely the "no broken up bands" rule only applies to bands who split up on bad terms or have deceased/AWOL members, right? It's definitely not unreasonable to suggest that Royal Trux may get back together eventually, or for the Loud Family (which didn't quite break up, but was disbanded because Scott Miller has gone into semi-retirement for reasons mostly having to do with money) to play a show that would pay them rather well?

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 26 May 2003 12:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Scott- Bwaaah! I think that could be very amusing, and actually could be an interesting statement now that I think about it. Plus I do agree that they are ummm... attractive, provided there's a mute button.

Matthew- Royal Trux afaik haven't "broken up" but are on a potentially infinite hiatus. If I can include Devo, you can include them. I think they'd be up for it.

Ok, I'm starting to feel like a moderator or something, but that's cool. Anyway I'll comment on a few selections in no particular order.

Todd-- I'd add Television to my list for sure if I had any small suspicion that I thought that they'd ever play together again, (Marquee Moon would be in my top 5 albums off all time) but AFAIK, thats not the case.

Dan-- Dan, Dan, Dan... Al Green will not play. At least not secular music and definitely nothing in the soul genre. Al Green, to me, is a musical deity. I think many a day, "Dammit, I'd never be able to do anything close to that. Guess I'll try to make my little white punk rock influenced stuff instead. I've been to his church on a couple occasions, just so I could see The Man in person. But unfortunately he believes that God does not want him making secular music recorded or live after a serious of accidents he has had. If that's really the case then his "god" is by no means omnibenevolent. OK, I didn't mean to get that religious. I support the man and his beliefs. If your ever in Memphis take the opportunity to pay a visit to the reverend. It's an experience (that I have to say further supported my agreement with James' The Will To Believe-- I'm also a semi-philosophy dork). But anyway, this is getting long. Amazing addition, but well outside the reasonable rules.

earl-- Dick Dale was an interesting choice, especially in your lineup. Changes the general feeling alot. I think maybe in a good way.

Jay-- I wouldn't have the heart to ask Cash to do anything right now. I'm hurtin' for the man in black. I don't mean this jokingly: have the man in your thoughts, prayers, whatever. June Carter turned his life around and was the thing thats really kept him goin' these past few years.

Anyway, this is becoming even more interesting and diverse to say the least. My (Bwhaha) evil side intention of finding music that I might enjoy is actually working. Revisions/additions to lists are welcome as are new lists, especially additions. Let's say screw 15 if you have the urge to, it's just a helpful guideline number. And let's try to bring back fewer bands and/or make fewer "supergroups". Remember that finding new music isn't just mide evil side motivation for making the thread but other's for posting to and reading it.
