What do you guys think of them?

Do you mean the Mini Pops, the early 80s paedo-attracting TV child musicians?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Sunday, 25 May 2003 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

they were a factory band, but from either belgium or holland rather than manchester. In keeping w/factory bands of the day, they were quite joy div-ish. IIRC they were pretty good, but it has been a long long time since i heard them.

The vocals shit me at times but I've a soft spot for them as one of the better Factory also-rans. Quite keen to get the LTM reissues.

My boss used to play guitar in the Minny Pops, so I think they're fantastic, obviously. (hi Gerard!)

I got the LTM singles and sessions comp (Secret Stories) and it's.....alright. The tracks I already knew on the Dolphin Spurt and Secret Smile singles are great and the rest isn't. I might be wrong abt this - I haven't really given a chance. Maybe one to go back to.

from what i remember of singles & jpeel session:
mid-paced or faster tempo stuff = good
slow stuff = dud
nice old rhythmbox sounds
singer's voice ok when semi-shouting or singintoning - gratingly flat and weak when trying to hold a note

quite keen to get reissues too

seven years pass...

heard a bunch of tracks off the secret stories comp at wall of sound the other day. great band, at least as long as they're doing the 80s goth electro thing. the album seemed to be entering an intolerable vein of spooky cabaret nonsense before i left, but i loved the tense, booming not-quite-disco of the preceding tracks. even dug the dutch-accented monotone declarations that pass for vocals. dude's hardly gifted, but his style's very well suited to the music. reminded me not a little of the recent debut album by the soft moon (or vice-versa, i suppose), which i've gone on about elsewhere.

i can see parallels. i think MP had lots of filler but their high points are tremendous. "time" has a sound i still aspire to
