Ice-T gets no love on ILM. Why? (C or D?)

Classic. I've only got one Ice T album, The Iceberg, but its possibly my favorite rap album of all time. It's got the party jams, the cinematic effects, the gangsta storytelling, the comedy, the drama, the incisive wit, the crisp diction. It's golden.

So why does he get so little love on here? Is it just ignorance or do people actively dislike this chap?

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 25 May 2003 23:39 (twenty-two years ago)

ignorance in the sense that he gets plenty of love on ilx?

James Blount (James Blount), Sunday, 25 May 2003 23:41 (twenty-two years ago)

the iceberg is his third best album at best

James Blount (James Blount), Sunday, 25 May 2003 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I couldn't find much of this supposed love, but I'm a happier man if you're right, Blount. Which albums are better? God knows I'd enjoy 'em if you're right.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 25 May 2003 23:56 (twenty-two years ago)

OG Original Gangster and Power, maybe even Rhyme Pays also. Iceberg's good - it has "You Played Yourself" - but too much of it's a harbinger for Body Count/Ice-T professional talk show guest.

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 26 May 2003 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never seen mention of him here, I don't think. I've never liked him either, but I haven't heard much. Professional Talk Show Guest Ice-T is the most terrible personality to ever grace my screen. He's really put me off.

Adam A. (Keiko), Monday, 26 May 2003 00:47 (twenty-two years ago)

when he fell off, he fell off HARD

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 26 May 2003 00:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Oddly enough, I've mentioned Ice-T. Back when I used to regularly listen to hip-hop, The Iceberg was in rotation almost as much as It Takes a Nation of Millions. I think it may be underrated, within its genre, today, though parts of it are too goofy for me now. (Didn't Ice-T already parody his own TV talk show guest persona in the beginnign of the "High Rollers" video?)

Rockist Scientist, Monday, 26 May 2003 00:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Oooh yeah, The Iceberg is his best.

Ice-T just rules in general. They should rename that L & O that he's on to: Law & Order: Ice-T. C'mon, he's the main attraction!

Home Invasion, people!! it's got a cameo by a 12 year old named Grip who no one ever heard from again; it's got the ultimate rockist's challenge ("this is not to the pop MCs but to all the MCs who started out hardcore and then went pop - how does it feel to look in the mirror and realize you're a fuckin ho?"); it's got "fuck fuck around / you catch a left and a right fist"

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 26 May 2003 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

* "no one ever heard from again" = serious projection, but i just checked AMG and all they have is "Tha Grip" and he's like, a dude

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 26 May 2003 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

"Fuckin blue lights / read 'em their rights / drama!"

Man, when Power came out he totally ruled the roost. I couldn't believe how great that record was from front to back, every song a winner. Me and my high school buddies used to rock it constantly. And of course I loved the Heart sample on "Personal".

Rhyme Pays was pretty good. "Make it Funky" is a great track; at a time when hip-hop was dominated by James Brown samples he tried to cram as many of them as he could into one track.

"Colors" was a great single. I don't know why but I never picked up The Iceberg. A concept album about freedom of speech just seemed like a big turnoff at the time.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Monday, 26 May 2003 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Here is where I say that I really like 'Mind Over Matter'. It's the only reason why I haven't sold 'O.G.'

oops (Oops), Monday, 26 May 2003 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

classic. OG still kicks ass top to bottom (I still get this "when's the record gonna kick in oh wait it's half over and it already must've since I'm having so much fun listening to it" thing whenever I put it on) and The Evidence, his hits etc. comp that Atomic Pop put out before biting the dust a few years back, is ace ace ace. here's my questions, though, for Tracer: (a) do you like the cover art? I think the Ego Trip Book of Rap Lists named it one of their 10 worst covers, and they were right. and (b) how the fuck do you neglect to mention "99 Problems" ("and a bitch ain't one"), which walks the great/offensive line w/unsurpassed finesse until Brother Marquis from 2 Live Crew comes in and makes you wanna spray the room with Raid?

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 04:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I also like the Analog Brothers' Pimp to Eat, his album w/Kool Keith. hate on that, indie-bashers!

M Matos (M Matos), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 04:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha "99 Problems" is awesome, I forgot about that Michelangelo! We need to get a car so we can drive around blasting that album. but what are you talking about w/the cover, man, Outkast would KILL for that cover!!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Agree that OG remains his best. I remember at the time we got a drunken Tom Paulin in the Mitre to get up and recite "New Jack Hustler" inna Auden stylee. Sadly we didn't tape or film it... :-(

Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Who told my old gym teacher that he knew how to rap?

Neudonym, Tuesday, 27 May 2003 14:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Mr. Diamond, Iceberg is in no way a concept album about freedom of speech. In fact, only about two or three songs on it even reference that subject. It's a rather diverse album stylistically and thematically.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the line "I've got his back if it means my career ends," because of the embedded "rear end" "career ends."

I played The Iceberg this week as it happens - You Played Yourself is a very big favourite of mine. Other than that, I think I'd probably rate OG higher.

g (graysonlane), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmm, Anthony, all I know is that most of the reviews at the time painted it that way. I would most certainly not be surprised to learn they were misleading. Obv I should have just checked it out for myself (and again, no real reason why I didn't as I especially had loved Power; maybe it was the Jello Biafra connection or something).

and what (ooo), Monday, 23 October 2006 19:18 (nineteen years ago)

Music shops across America are refusing to stock Ice-T's new album because of the raunchy image on the cover.

The 48-year-old rapper poses nude with his stripper wife Coco draped over him, barely covering his usually concealed weapon. Unless his record label places stickers over the album - which is titled Gangsta Rap and is his first in seven years - the legendary rapper faces a boycott by stores.

He said: "What can I say, I have been doing these kinds of things for years. You should see the picture when Coco's leg is not there."

2 Live Crew Member Files Lawsuit Against Jay-Z & Ice-T Over ‘99 Problems’
Wednesday November 16th 2005,

Mark “Brother Marquis” Ross, formerly of pioneering Miami, Florida rap group 2 Live Crew, hit Ice-T and Jay-Z with a lawsuit over the lyrics to Jay-Z’s hit song “99 Problems.”

The original version of the song was featured on Ice-T’s classic 1993 album Home Invasion, with a cameo from Brother Marquis.

In his lawsuit, which was filed in Manhattan Federal Court, Brother Marquis claims he’s been paid just $10,000 in royalties, despite being prominently featured on the original version.

Furthermore, Brother Marquis claims that Jay-Z owes him royalties after recording an updated version of “99 Problems,” which was produced by Rick Rubin and featured on Jay-Z’s blockbuster, The Black Album.

Jay-Z also shot a critically acclaimed video for the song, which was shot by veteran director Mark Romanek.

After leaving 2 Live Crew around 1996, Brother Marquis had a spiritual awakening and entered the church, but still tours with a reincarnation of the group.

How appropriate.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 25 October 2006 17:46 (nineteen years ago)

I think that part was either a hoax or he's since renounced becoming born again.

Most of the interviews with Marquis as a born again Christian have been removed from the Christian sites that host them, and there was talk of a reunion where all four members would return to their x-rated roots recently.

one year passes...

I can't explain it - for some reason I wanted to listen to Ice-T (very rarely listen to hiphop/rap/gansta/beats), so I dug up my OG CD tonight.

Damn this slays just like it did back when I was a senior in college. And just like then - it's gonna put me off the psych rock for a while - gotta enroll in that Rap School - I could never pull it off - but I love to rediscover the fact that it's beautiful music.

Iceberg's good - it has "You Played Yourself" - but too much of it's a harbinger for Body Count/Ice-T professional talk show guest.

I don't know how anyone could complain about Ice-T as a "Body Count/Ice-T professional talk show guest" and dig O.G., which actually HAS Body and him being interviewed on a talk show!

da croupier, Friday, 9 November 2007 17:01 (eighteen years ago)

I bought Power to see if it was as good as Iceberg, but the music's way too monochrome in comparison. Iceberg is so fucking slept on, though the SPIN guide gives it a 9 and gives O.G. a 7. The piece wasn't written by one of the regular SPINheads, which figures.
