Where's the controversy? Where's the fun?

We're almost half way through the year and, well, nothing.
Usually, by this point, there's some sort of controversy or some sort of bandwagon for people to jump on, but I haven't noticed anything of the sort. I've liked some albums, but as far as biff bang pow, there doesn't seem to be much going on.
Have I missed something maybe?

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Monday, 26 May 2003 06:18 (twenty-two years ago)

you've missed alot

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 26 May 2003 06:27 (twenty-two years ago)

How could you even imagine there would be no controversy here? Whaddya want, fucking Eminem?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 26 May 2003 06:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, what about Tatu?

Siegbran (eofor), Monday, 26 May 2003 08:03 (twenty-two years ago)

yeh Siegbran, what about them? :=0

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Monday, 26 May 2003 13:21 (twenty-two years ago)

June 3, my friends, will be the day it all comes together.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 26 May 2003 14:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Deos this have something to do with the I Ching?

Kenan Hebert (kenan), Monday, 26 May 2003 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 26 May 2003 14:58 (twenty-two years ago)

OK I wasn't talking about good albums.
I was drunk when I wrote the question so the fault is probably mine, but I was talking about Eminem and his ilk. Or some sort of trend like post-punk or garage. For the last couple of years, we've had some controversial pop stars in the headlines and a cycle of trends, for better or for worse. There are a few vestiges of that this year - labels keep releasing new "garage rock" records, but I haven't noticed anything yet that in a few years time will make me think
"Ah yes, that was 2003."
I do want a fuckin' Eminem. It makes shit lively.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Monday, 26 May 2003 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

June 3, the shit will all hit the fan.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 26 May 2003 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

The trends are glitch turning into big band jazz, Mexico becoming the new Tokyo, and smash hits being made out of little bits of musique concrete.

Leather is the new worsted.

Momus (Momus), Monday, 26 May 2003 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

momus do you live in a perpetual 1999?

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 26 May 2003 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

when he's not living in a perpetual 1996

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 26 May 2003 16:45 (twenty-two years ago)

New John Mellancamp on June 3, electroclash meets the heartland. You will want to get in on the groundfloor (because there are no high rises in rural Indiana).

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Monday, 26 May 2003 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I still keep expecting a rap/country fusion to hit. Any second now. (looks at watch) Yep. Any...second...now. (long pause. drawn out sigh) MMMmmhmmm. Its gonna be huge...when it happens. Just you wait and see. (begins filing nails) Yep. Won't be long now.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 26 May 2003 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

d k (d k), Monday, 26 May 2003 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

that Trick Daddy record's been out for awhile now Custos
Yes, but has it reached Beatlemania-level proportions of mega-mainstream superstardom? Has it reached the top of the Billboard charts? Has it lead to to every record label pumping lots and lots of money into 100 different knock-off acts? Has it actually made anyone thinks of doing away with the Rap and Country charts and merging them into one category (Funky Oat Opera? Hip-Horse? G-Nashville?)
No.
Ergo, Rap/Country hasn't yet become...the...Next...Big...Thing.

But it will...

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 26 May 2003 17:31 (twenty-two years ago)

custos, seriously, what planet do you live on?

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 26 May 2003 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i mean, normally i just let you spout your dalek-speak, but i can't honestly even begin to pick apart what's wrong with your last two posts on this thread.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 26 May 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Custos - yes

James Blount (James Blount), Monday, 26 May 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Monday, 26 May 2003 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Jess: custos, seriously, what planet do you live on? i mean, normally i just let you spout your dalek-speak....
Y'know...if I could've remembered the name of the planet Dalek's came from, I woulda had a great comeback.

...but i can't honestly even begin to pick apart what's wrong with your last two posts on this thread....
Just remembering how I espoused a belief that the advent of a rap/country fusion ("Hick Hop"...hahahahaha...) was immenent...and now its overdue. Its something so damned obvious. It just hasn't happened on a big enough scale to overshadow Nu-Metal and Boy Band Pop.

Nate: "I like all kindsa music except country and rap" -- like 2 out of every 3 random work/school acquaintances I've ever talked to about music, ever
They forgot to mention opera.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 26 May 2003 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

"hip-horse" sound pretty great, though.

vahid (vahid), Monday, 26 May 2003 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

And the Brits will use it to craft Trip Horse.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 26 May 2003 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Monday, 26 May 2003 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Monday, 26 May 2003 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

David Beckhouse (David Beckhouse), Monday, 26 May 2003 22:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Y'know...if I could've remembered the name of the planet Daleks came from, I woulda had a great comeback.

Skaro. Now if you had a TARDIS, you could go back in time and post the comeback.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Monday, 26 May 2003 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

And the Brits will use it to craft Trip Horse

and then
Die Trip Computer Die eventually'll change their name to
Trip Over Racehorse Trip and duly make the album Racecourse Death ...without advancing the cause of count'y rap whatsoever, for theirs was only an art-punk prankah, just for the controversy & fun!

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Monday, 26 May 2003 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

It's interesting how threads can sort of meander, drift off into the uncharted.
Now I demand to heat this hick hop fusion. I want this to be the controversial fun.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 03:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I want to hear it, though heating it may add to the aforementioned controversy.

Bruce Urquhart (Bruce Urquhart), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Would Bob Log III count as Hick Hop?

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 05:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Jess: custos, seriously, what planet do you live on?
(*Tardis Noises*)
Custos: SKARO! (Ta-Dah!)

Will Country Rap be right wing or bring blue collar liberalism back to Country?
Well, there might not be that much distance between the "Kill any ATF Paratrooper you find!" mentality and the "Fuck Tha Police" mentality.
Same goes for "Nuke 'em till they glow and shoot 'em in the dark"...
Just imagine Charlie Daniels barking out the following lyrics:

Brainstorm microphone napalm/ This is it, words from a timebomb
Attack speed, fast as an F15/ Raise the heat, light thhe gasoline
Overload, it might cause a blackout/ Dead end/ There's no chnce to back out
Hit the tripwire/ Duck from the gunfire
Broken glass, screech'n car tires, bodies hit the deck/
As I commence to wreck/ Eject another clip and drip sweat
Face of danger, increasin' anger/ Point blank/ I smoke another stranger

Just end it with a loud YEEEEE-HAW! and yer there.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 16:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Charlie Daniels isn't country

James Blount (James Blount), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)
