Songs that sum up a certain aspect of your life, and the awareness of this discomforts you

"You're All I've Got Tonight" by the Cars is one terrific song, and I can't stop playing it because it is 1. awesome! and 2. a perfect summary of my relationship with my newfound friend. "I don't care if you hurt me some more...you're all I've got tonight." Temporary using each other out of lust and desperation. Sad but true. It's a grwat song, and my love for it largely springs from the sitatuion I'm in. It just makes me a little uneasy that this is my summary.

"I don't care if you hurt me some more...you're all I've got tonight."

I always liked how this line can be construed as a backhanded insult. On one hand, yeah, desperation, etc, but also... it's like when you have to stay at the filthy fleabag hooker motel because all the good places are booked up. It's not a choice you make, it's something you settle for.

hearing the Bruce'steen live version of Jimmy Cliff's "Trapped" some time in the mid-eighties i morosely thought that the song title applied to rather many aspects of my life at the time. personal, professional, social. haven't heard the song since (& have never come across Cliff's original), but i don't think "Trapped" would make me feel quite the same way now. it just couldn't.

My mental breakdown coincided, and was perfectly reflected by, "Electro Shock Blues" by the Eels. So much that I can hardly listen to that album now.

Used to be that all the sad songs on Blur's Parklife and Radiohead's The Bends summed up my life. Made me v.uncomfortable; now my life's all "Sunshine Lollipops and Rainbows."

What a difference a week makes.

"The Fear" by ยต-ziq pretty much sums up the breakdown/depression episode I had at the end of my college career. I was playing that album over and over while I poured my noontime vodka tonics that summer.

"Does Everyone Stare" by The Police is pretty much the story of every single crush I've ever had. Yikes.

"Get A Move On" by Mr. Scruff was the story of my escape from the University of Tennessee and the entire album (Keep It Unreal) eventually ended up being the mental soundtrack to my enlistment and my stay in San Antonio for basic training. Marching about in drill with "Jus Jus" bouncing through my head is probably one of those feelings I will never ever lose.

"One Two Three (No Gravity)" by Closer Musik (on Total 2) was the sound of my slow recovery from my last relationship, while I spent two months or so deciding to be completely detached from everything.

Or Offspring's "Self Esteem", not a song I really like and a large factor of that is the cringe-worthy perfection of the story of my high school life, especially if the pronoun gender is switched (ie say HE instead of she). This because I was both a pushover and a sucker!

From the same era of my life, I sang Fiona Apple's "Criminal" to my friend using her name instead of the first-person pronoun. It worked painfully well.

My personal song is also by the Cars. This one songsums up how I feel about my girlfriend so well; I was lonely before I had her and she really is, well, just what I needed. And at the same time, I feel kinda ambivalent about the whole relationship. I don't really want her around constantly, but I don't really mind her wasting all my time, 'cause I kinda lose my mind when she's standing oh so near. I don't want her around when she's not around but I can't bear to see her leave.

Neil Young, in "On The Beach" - "I need a crowd of people / but I can't face them day to day." Perhaps I've said too much...
