I hate them but everyone else seems to like them

Most of my friends like 50 Cent, Fabulous, Eminem, Jennifer Lopez, and a lot of other artists like that and I can't stand them. Do you have any friends or know any people who like bands or artists that you can't stand?

Aja (aja), Monday, 26 May 2003 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

The list of other people for me used to go on and on many years ago. Time has changed things. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 26 May 2003 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Aja, the question you should be asking yourself is this: Are people who rate/enjoy/champion/tolerate 50 Cent, Fabolous, Eminem and Jennifer Lopez REALLY worth hanging around? Clearly they've got low standards and are easily amused by low.com.denom shenanigans. Give'em the keys to the street, I say.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 26 May 2003 23:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Or is your friend's bad taste justification for feeding them rat poison?

Savin All My Love 4 u (Savin 4ll my (heart) 4u), Monday, 26 May 2003 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

It sounds to me like your friends are normal people.

Adam A. (Keiko), Monday, 26 May 2003 23:34 (twenty-two years ago)

It sounds like your friends are normal people.

I know! They think I'm weird because I like Foo Fighters, Nirvana, Queen, The Clash, and bands like that. The only peple I know that have the same intersts in music as I do are my teachers and my friends' parents. My teachers are 26 years old though. I don't even think all my friends' parents like rock. Why do people like hip hop and rap anyway? I just don't get it.

Aja (aja), Monday, 26 May 2003 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Um, because they're different from you?

oops (Oops), Monday, 26 May 2003 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Massive Attack. Or Passive Attack, as I prefer to call them.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Monday, 26 May 2003 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

They're different yeah but how can you listen to one of their songs? I can't even listen to one with out yelling, " Is it over yet!"

When I listen to a Foo Fighters' song I yell, "No! It's almost over!"
Especially when I listen to "Everlong (acoustic)". I taped that one off the radio yesterday and heard it on the radio again 15 minutes ago. It's the 46 most popular song on the station I listen to in the past 15 years. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is #1.

Millar (Millar), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 00:23 (twenty-two years ago)

My new friend and I had an intense bonding moment upon discovering we both hate LIVE. Other bewilderingly popular bands that everyone swoons for while I scowl:
Counting Crows - The singer has the most irritating voice in the world, and I have no idea what it is people gain from their lyrics.
Lil' Kim - Her stick isn't awesome or funny, acting like a floozy isn't noteworthy. NB I've never heard her music, but I'm tired of hearing about her schitck.

Aja, you have pretty young teachers!
Do you like Queens of the Stona Age? They have the Grohl connection, but it seems like everyone does these days.

Fivvy (Fivvy), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Aja, trying giving a listen to early Public Enemy. It'll probably show you better then anything else, as a rock fan, what hip hop has to offer. Keep an open mind.

Davidallen@seanbaby.com, Tuesday, 27 May 2003 01:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you have any friends or know any people who like bands or artists that you can't stand?

I don't like a lot of what my good friends like, but as long as they're obsessed with music as well, that's the important thing. Gets kinda weird when you share an specific obsession with everybody you spend time with. Also makes record shopping together easier... no fighting over that copy of "London Weekend" you find together, and they point out stuff you like, extra pair of eyes.

fortunate hazel (f. hazel), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 02:10 (twenty-two years ago)

you found a copy of London Weekend? lucky.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 02:11 (twenty-two years ago)

No one likes it when they get their tastes in music, clothing or food bashed.

Mad Jason, Tuesday, 27 May 2003 02:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I cannot, for the life of me, like the Smiths. And I've
tried, gosh how I've tried. The guitar work is great,
and the lyrics are so incredible (besides "Meat Is Murder,"
was that a joke or something?), but the singer does
NOTHING for me.

Re: Queens Of The Stone Age
I feel vaguely embarassed that this band is becoming so
popular. It would be fitting if they were getting worse
over time, so I could say "ha, you idiotic fools, you
missed out on their peak era!" but sadly, _Songs For
The Deaf_ is their best album.

squirl plise (Squirrel_Police), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 02:48 (twenty-two years ago)

The Flaming Lips. People in my demographic (30-something indie rock veterans, mostly) love them for some reason. I used to like them too, when I was in college and no one made the bizarre mistake of taking them seriously. Now I think they're unctuous and "cute" and kind of creepy, but lots of people I know go to their shows and claim to have transcendental experiences.

Oh, and Aja, Eminem rules. He's way better than the Foo Fighters. Really.

Eminem's V A S T L Y overrated.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 11:08 (twenty-two years ago)

is it better to have friends who like shit music or know dickheads who like what you like?

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 11:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it depends on how vehemently they espouse bad music. I have friends who, by my rigid, Talibanesque standards, listen to music that I wouldn't play at a dog, but they don't seem to care about the art form enough to begin with to bother seeking out stuff that is inarguably superior (and by that I don't mean solely stuff that I like). I just can't imagine that anyone who does take music seriously would waste their time on the likes of Jennifer Lopez. I mean, I don't like the blend of arguably latin-tinged, "street"-informed dance music/r&b to begin with, but I know there are artists who pull it off with more style and substance than she manages.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 11:21 (twenty-two years ago)

well i've got a mate who likes steve vai...thats inarguably superior to j-Lo isn't it?

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

thats inarguably superior to j-Lo isn't it?

Well, Steve Vai played on a Public Image Ltd. record. The rancid cancer of culture that is La Lopez did not, so yes.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 11:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't "get" the Flaming Lips, The Smiths, The Pixies, or even Magnetic Fields (most of the time). I know I don't focus on lyrics like some people, but what should I be listening to with these acts? This is how I hear each of them:

The Flaming Lips - elaborate, interesting arrangements, interrupted by stupid squelching noises and airy-fairy breakdowns. The lyrics are insipid, fantasyland pap, with little emotional committment. Why should I care? (I quite like "Do You Realize?")

The Smiths - Sameish pop-rock that play-acts at emotion while jerking about. Like The Cure (who are good) without dynamics, and somehow even more melodramatic.

The Pixies - Um. Rock music with flourishes of great electric guitar, but mostly just samey and with a weaselly-voiced lead singer. The lyrics are immature, the melodies are things for whining, not singing, along to. (I like "Where is My Mind," though.)

The Magnetic Fields - Some of their stuff is wonderful ("Absolutely Cuckoo," "Book of Love"), but much of it sounds like Leonard Cohen wearing a party-hat - moping, emotionally disconnected words, over cheesy, pomo arrangements. There's little conviction - just wit, and thin-lipped whimsy.

I know I could learn to love any of these groups - I only recently learned to listen (and love) the Velvet Underground. I still can't understand those who promote Lou Reed as the pinnacle of songwriting, but the records still stand high on their own.

Looking over these criticisms, though, it looks like I'm party to a rockist (folkist?) viewpoint that values conviction/sincerity/emotion over reserved titters and self-consciousness. Not sure if this is a bad thing, though.

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 12:11 (twenty-two years ago)

(for the record, I like: The Beatles, Nina Nastasia, R.E.M., 50 Cent, Radiohead, The Strokes, Songs:Ohia, Beck, Blackalicious, The Microphones, Arab Strap, Belle and Sebastian, Junior Senior...

Sean@tangmonkey (Sean M), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 12:15 (twenty-two years ago)

There's little conviction - just wit, and thin-lipped whimsy.

i dunno. i have cried at "fear of trains" before.

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 12:19 (twenty-two years ago)

but is that because of the music, or is the music just the trigger for certain memories/emotions?

I'm sorry, regardless of how long I've been slathering my big-headed opinions all over these boards, I still cannot fathom how anyone with half a brain would seriously defend Jennifer Lopez's music as being anyhing other than bog-standard....at BEST!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

o...jenny from the block as "extremely interesting artifact", would you go for that alex?

i can't get next to belle and sebastian, or any emo whatsoever.

praying mantis (praying mantis), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Godspeed. Mogwai. Sigur Ros. Tortoise. Autechre. *Anything* even vaguely post-rock -- I've tried to like it, I just can't. Ive even seen Mogwai live twice, having been informed by otherwise reliable sources that it would be a life-changing experience, and it just wasnt. I was even slightly bored.
I suggest, Aja, that you come to my school -- almost everyone there likes Queen, Nirvana and Foo Fighters, much to my bewilderment.

I don't like Queens of the Stone Age. The only song I'll listen to is "No One Know" and I'm just really only listening to the drumming anyway. I can't stand the singer's voice. I can't believe Dave went on tour with them! Why are they so popular?

Eminem is not better than Foo Fighters. Eminem is just really overrated. I don't know. Maybe I have more respect for bands, especially when the singer also plays an instument.

Aja (aja), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

the voice is an instrument.

di smith (lucylurex), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 22:22 (twenty-two years ago)

the voice is an instrument.
Well yeah, but you know what I mean. When they play an instrument like a guitar or even bass it's a lot more fun to watch them preform.
