The best record ever made.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmmm. I do indeed love this record, but that's a bit of an overstatement, Nordicskillet.

I know, but THAT'S what you've got to do to start a healthy debate on here. Insert "today" at the end of that sentence.

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

That was the one Alice Cooper record that me and my friends all copied for each other when we were in Grade 7, so classic. I had the Sex Pistols Flogging a Dead Horse on the B-Side. Nostalgic classic. Haven't heard in a decade though.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Alright, I'll play that game.

NORDICFISH, you INSOLENT IGNORAMUS, even my INCONTINENT GRANDMOTHER knows that the best record ever made is Group Sex by the Circle Jerks.....and SHE'S BEEN DEAD FOR TEN YEARS!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

There's no accounting for taste.

But seriously, that is a fuckin' great rekkid. What else is/was she into? Will she do me a mix cd?

Nordicskillz (Nordicskillz), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Donovan cameo=genius

Charles McCain (Charles McCain), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 15:31 (twenty-two years ago)

classic. got a copy for a buck twenny-five at some used record store, and it still has the original inserts in it.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 15:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Also great: "Love It to Death" (the 2nd side is well nigh perfect) and "Killer".

Avoid: "School's Out" (disappointingly feeble given that Alice was on a major roll at the time)

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 15:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Billion Dollar Babies is sooooooooooo very very classic in all possible ways, and the remaster with the bonus live disc is even better!

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

This record is utterly, unbelievably, amazingly eh.

amateurist (amateurist), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

what does "eh" mean in america? in new zealand it doesn't mean anything, it's just this thing you say at the end of a sentence for no reason.

yeah "billion dollar babies" is great, eh!

duane, Tuesday, 27 May 2003 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

eh meh

Classick. Every cut is really good & it stands the test of time. I like all of the records by the original Alice Cooper band (Buxton, Bruce, etc.), but Love It to Death, Killer, and this one are the best. Avoid Muscle of Love.

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Muscle of Love has a few killer tracks on it, but is weak as an album. In particular, I think "Crazy Little Child" is one of Alice's best songs ever. I consider Love it To Death / School's Out / Killer to be the pinnacle of Alice. There are plenty of later albums I like, (I even like his new wave period) but nothing on the order of those three. The first two albums are good art, but not so great rock.

Dave Fischer, Tuesday, 27 May 2003 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I love all the original Alice Cooper band records too, even Muscle of Love. Love it to Death is my fave.

Sean (Sean), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 01:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Billion Dollar Babies is the first record I ever hid from my parents and brothers and sisters. Though I did have I the Alice Cooper dollar bill on my wall for about a decade. Yes, very classic. And Charles McCain is SO right, the Donovan cameo is absolutely genius. I think Alice Cooper is the smartest American rock star ever. Him and Chuck Berry.

Arthur (Arthur), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 02:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I really enjoy the psemi-psychedelic pfreakiness of the 1st 2 Cooper platers. Fields of Regret, Refrigerator Heaven, Sing Low Sweet Cheerio, Mr. & Misdemeanor... Great stuff. I prefer both of them to Muscle of Love. I also like them better than everything Alice has done since the original band broke up, with the possible exception of Welcome to My Nightmare. Goes To Hell & Flush the Fashion were OK too though.

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 14:57 (twenty-two years ago)

thirteen years pass...

CLASSIC!

Neal Smith should get a medal for his amazing drumming on the title track alone, but there's some great musical moments on this record. I think I've said this on here before, but Smith/Dunaway surely must be the most underrated rhythm section in '70s rock.

Yeah, on some of the other Alice Cooper threads that have been updated more recently.

In particular here

Listen to the strength of composition and the interplay of the musicians during the middle section of 'Unfinished Sweet' ... things like that and 'Halo of Flies' really blew me away on first listen. I was stunned when I found out later that they were often accused of being unable to play their instruments!

While I'm aware that they ended up getting in session musicians in on School's Out and Billion Dollar Babies, due to Glen Buxton's becoming less and less functional, it's amazing to me how they grew as musicians from the first album up until Killer. Bob Ezrin undoubtedly had a hand in it, but this was a band that were undoubtedly pushing their own boundaries.
