Taking Sides:
The "Warmth" of Analog vinyl and tube-based amps
         vs
              the "Cleanliness" of digital cds....FITE!
Also:
All done in one raw take...vs...cobbled together meticulously from hundreds of scraps and peices.

I can't hear the warmth for the staggering amount of surface noise and crackle.

You talk as if it has to be either/or. It doesn't, surely?

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

nothing to do with anything really but i knew portishead had gone mad on that second rekkid when he said he had recorded beth singing put it on vinyl and then sampled it to get the right warmth and crackle.

ooh dear.

I'm with that. A pointless romance if ever there was one.

I'm pro-ease and pro-laziness, so CDs and one take all the way.

Ferg (Ferg), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I love the fetishization of vinyl crackle.

I love those old jerky silent movies.

I love dusty library shelves with cracked red leather spines and gold leaf lettering.

ILM is afraid of the past. Angry? Really?

Fear of the past. Pff. I never hated it so much until I started remastering all my vinyl onto CD. Now the mere hint of it irritates me beyond all belief.. now it detracts from the music.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 05:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, okay. I left all my vinyl behind when I left England. I had no room for it in one suitcase and a carry-on bag. I told my friends and they swooped and had their feeding frenzy, the bastards (heh). Now I live in western Canada and I have a handful of cassettes and hundreds of CDs, some repurchased versions of my old vinyl collection, others entirely new. I miss my old records, but I have nothing to play vinyl on, and no money with which to buy stereo equipment even if I wanted to.

I guess it's all good from my POV. But those few cassettes I recorded from actual records, complete with their pops and scratches, I treasure. When bands started to reproduce that sound in the 90s (I'm thinking of Portishead, primarily, on their eponymous album), I have to admit I responded with enthusiasm.

David A. (Davant), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 07:20 (twenty-two years ago)

the thing is that i never, ever noticed it on cassettes..

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 09:57 (twenty-two years ago)

(vinyl taped onto cassettes i mean)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 09:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I know someone who swears that vinyl recorded to minidisc is the perfect mix

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

If LPs sound better it has nothing to do with "warmth" (at least not anymore).
