I like "Remission" a lot. Do they have anything else out/Affiliated to any other bands?

King Eddie, Tuesday, 27 May 2003 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Search: Sick Leg, a Reptilian Records 7", which has the phenomenal track, "Thank You for This".

I have yet to hear the Lifesblood EP.

Wired Flounder (Wired Flounder), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

"Lifesblood" is only OK, did not even prepare me for the total greatness of "Remission." I think Mastodon still counts as "one to watch," the next album could be completely fierce

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 22:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Search the archives of www.wfmu.org, and you find both a live show they recorded there, as well as a show during which one of their songs was played at 33rpm instead of 45rpm which made it sound just that much more crushing.

Ryan McKay (Ryan McKay), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Search: the t-shirt that says "Mastadong" sold on their last tour which has a guy with a 18 inche dong on the front of the shirt.

Brock K. (Brock K.), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I heard the album only once but I really thought it was great.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 00:56 (twenty-two years ago)

It's great - heavy with enough complexity and depth. Kicks bum.

Marinaorgan (Marina Organ), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 01:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Mastodon is some of the best new heavy shit in a long time. I think some of the members were in a band called Today is the Day who I've never heard. I heard the EP before Remission called Lifeblood I think... only once though and it sounded good.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 02:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Ive never heard any Today Is The Day either. Lets also do a Today Is The Day C/D, S&D etc too on this thread.

KIng Eddie, Wednesday, 28 May 2003 02:19 (twenty-two years ago)

there aren't many bands that I'd call "weird" 'cause most "weirdness" seems so calculated (and therefore not weird 'cause it's easy to understand), but Today Is the Day, man, that there is some weird shit.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 02:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it good though and where is the best place to start?

King Eddie, Wednesday, 28 May 2003 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Not trying to start a lame Internet flamewar thingy (especially not about Mastodon) (and, just to clarify, I've got as much love for the 18-inch penis as the next person), but that "Mastodong" T-shirt is some racist-ass shit...

Mikael Wood, Wednesday, 28 May 2003 02:42 (twenty-two years ago)

That's a whole lotta love.

Wired Flounder (Wired Flounder), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 02:46 (twenty-two years ago)

The mid-to-late-90s period of Today is the Day is the era with the Mastodon drummer, I think (Brann Dailor)--check In the Name of God though the new double-disc Sadness Will Prevail is fucking awesome. My fave TITD is Supernova because, as JD said above, it's incredibly strange. Distorted and difficult but also somehow meatheaded--kind of like Eyehategod (who are great and wonderful and etc etc and would be greatly loved by people who enjoy Mastodon--John I think will back me up on this).

As for Mastodon, Remission was my fave album of last year, I love it, especially the first minute of "March of the Fire Ants."

adam (adam), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 02:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think Mastodon fans would necessarily like Eyehategod, since the latter don't have all those rock'n'rollisms and clean uptempo stuff. EHG is pure dread.

I think "Remission" is a really good album, though I don't really listen to it very often, I'm really curious about how that band's going to go in the future.
So far I prefer Today Is The Day quite a bit (the latest album is excellent, despite what all the cronies on the Relapse board will tell you)
However, the self titled TITD is probably my favorite nowadays.

Øystein Holm-Olsen (Øystein H-O), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 06:09 (twenty-two years ago)

EHG occasionally break out into a little bit of a groove/recognizable melody--it's just buried under a huge slab of awfulness and pain (in a good way). 3/4 of Eyehategod (ie everyone but Jimmy Bower) is now in a new project called Outlaw Order, who are really insanely good. It's that same kind of Mike Williams howling over almost-hardcore--like really, really fast sludge. It's impressive.

adam (adam), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 12:23 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah I'd say that the more one listens to EHG, the more actual ROCK you hear: the dread is sort of a sandbag against, ummm, the possibility of gaining listeners. Last time I listened to Dopesick it struck me as downright groovy.

As to that newest Today Is The Day, it really doesn't sound like anything to me: so completely of-itself. Maybe it reminds me a little of some o' those rockin'-er bands in the artsy-industrial English scene in the early eighties (i.e., trying to fuse anguished screaming with elegant piano sounds over a backdrop of skreeeeeech), but only a little. It's also very difficult to get through: I listened to it twice, was really impressed, and am now kind of afraid of it.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Last time I listened to Dopesick it struck me as downright groovy.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. Every now and again (esp on Confederacy of Ruined Lives) they hit this patch of Allman Brothers boogie--only for a little while before it is sucked back down into murk and "sludge."

To bring this back to Mastodon: Mastodon are completely fucking great live. The tour with Dillinger Escape Plan was very cool especially as Mastodon blew DEP off the stage--perhaps a dangerous idea now that DEP has that meathead frat guy for a singer.

adam (adam), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

If you ever see EHG live, a lot of what they're all about becomes really clear: Jimmy Bowers, the guitarist, sees no difference between sludge & boogie, or at least believes them to be halves of the same coin: he smiles a lot at the audience, is visibly groovin' behind his feel-shitty riffs, and so on. Meanwhile, the singer, Michael Williams, is nihilism personified, having a much more mean-spirited version of fun. Totally thrilling, genuinely frightening.

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

i just got _remission_ - omg. omg. omg.

OMG. finally i have something to put on when i've already listened to _surrounded by thieves_ 3 times in a day.

(haven't watched the DVD yet, though.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 10 January 2004 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going to see Mastodon in less than two weeks! I'll get to see that pointy-bearded devil-singer up close. Sort of reminds me of Abe Lincoln too from the side - with a pointy devil-beard.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Saturday, 10 January 2004 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I was just listening to Remission this afternoon, what a coinky-dink!
I love the Jurassic Park sample the album starts off with. Classic.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Sunday, 11 January 2004 09:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm so glad people are finally getting around to praising this band. Most of Remission is pure genius (and Lifesblood is killer too).

Maybe Mastodon will help crusty rock critic types to give other 'creative' metal bands a chance - Lamb of God, people!!!!

roger adultery (roger adultery), Sunday, 11 January 2004 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Mastodon is pure genius indeed. Theyre all so talented together. I can't wait until their next record comes out. I think it'll blow Remission away. I think they'll just keep getting better and better. Remission sounds like they were really starting to find their own great thing and I can't wait to hear where it'll go next.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Sunday, 11 January 2004 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
I'm finally hearing this album and it is loud and frenetic. Always a good sign.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 12 February 2004 03:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I've said this before, but a band that starts off their album with a sample from Jurassic Park and then segues into a massive metal riff has got to be cool.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 12 February 2004 03:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Is that what that was at the start? I've only seen the movie once and even then it was about half of it and I was more laughing at the UNIX system reference.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 12 February 2004 04:01 (twenty-two years ago)

It's from the "t-rex attacking the ford explorers in the rain" scene.

That's true that movie portrayals of computers are almost always ludicrously inaccurate (at least they always used to be before almost everyone had internet access). I was watching Weird Science on Comedy Central today and thinking the same thing.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 12 February 2004 04:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw Mastodon live a few weeks back. I was a fan before but I left knowing that I can expect some good shit on their new album this Fall. They rocked balls live.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Thursday, 12 February 2004 05:08 (twenty-two years ago)

five months pass...
New Mastodon and DEP albums have leaked. All over slsk.

Rock Bastard, Tuesday, 3 August 2004 05:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, the new DEP is in stores, so it hasn't exactly "leaked."

I have been informed that a copy of the new Mastodon is on its way to me. Can't wait.

Same here, and I should be interviewing them for an upcoming issue of Loose Lips Sink Ships.

http://shop.relapse.com/dbimages/sleeves/6682_216.jpg

They blew it. No sludge, no doom, no Crusher/Destroyer, no incredible listen-to-the-drummer-play-fills-during-the-entire-fucking-album. Just a lot of cheap Maiden and Slayer imitations.

This is like Cave In following up Jupiter with Antenna.

I'm so bummed right now.

harshaw (jube), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmmm. I will reserve judgment until hearing.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

At first I thought that cover was amazing, but after 4 seconds of looking at it, I HATE IT.

I really wanna hear this.

Mastadon LIVE trumps Mastadon recorded, FWIW.

ddb (ddb), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

"listen-to-the-drummer-play-fills-during-the-entire-fucking-album"

wait, how could they stop this? :(

cutty (mcutt), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 16:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I admit that worries me a bit, I thought the whole idea was that the drummer really wanted to create a strong but also distinct sound, very much in a prog vein.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

my first reaction: IS this the new mastodon? the vocals don't sound right, the guitars are kind of lacking low-end (doom/sludge). drums seem pretty similar to "remission" but simplified during the more straightforward riffs, they're a bit higher in the mix.

(most of this could change by the time the record comes out - who knows if this is the final mix?)

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

ddb otm re. cover

jess, Tuesday, 3 August 2004 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Considering the album is indeed supposed to be a retelling of Moby Dick, I figured nothing yes.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Heh heh. Nothing LESS. But nothing Yes also works.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 3 August 2004 19:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I think it's a great album actually. It is less sludgy but hardly a sell out. I don't like bands making the same albums twice anyway.

Ramon D, Tuesday, 3 August 2004 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah I'm not trying to lay down the official verdict, or anything. I was looking forward to the new album and think its really a bland effort to mainstream their sound. Whatever, they don't owe me anything.

Wait does that sound too pissy?

harshaw (jube), Wednesday, 4 August 2004 05:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Got this in the mail today, along with two T-shirts (Agoraphobic Nosebleed and Relapse Records). Can't listen to it, though, because it's copy protected. Guess I'll check it out at home tonight.

Leviathan

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 6 August 2004 02:38 (twenty-one years ago)

you guys are crazy! I really like this one. So far....(I'm 2 tracks in)

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 6 August 2004 03:07 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, i see what you're saying - it's way different. Brann Dailor's drums are maybe not as over the top as before. But the songs are good! I'm totally psyched to jam this one in the car. Don't you people drive??

I think it's interesting how up-front the vox are compared to the other two records - dude seems to be cultivating a Phil-Anselmo-in-Superjoint-guise thing, which is welcome as far as I'm concerned

I wanna see 'em live

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 6 August 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I really dig this, too. I think cleaning up their sound, and making it less monolithic with more separation, is a major improvement. I gotta give it a few more listens before writing a review, and then I'm gonna dive headfirst into the new Necrophagist CD, which came in today's mail.

three weeks pass...

Revisiting Hushed and Grim for the first time in awhile, it's fucking fantastic. I think it'll stand up as one of the band's best. Doesn't hurt that it ends with an absolutely incredible run - "Gobblers of Dregs", "Eyes of Serpents" and "Gigantium" are all so good.

Maxmillion D. Boosted (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 10 May 2023 16:27 (two years ago)

it's a good one for sure. My only complaint as always is that they should let Brent Hinds sing more. He doesn't have quite as powerful a voice as the other 2 but he sounds cooler. I get burned out on Troy Sanders constant bellowing and Brann Dailor is a bit bland.

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Wednesday, 10 May 2023 16:49 (two years ago)

Brann barely sang at all on the first bunch of records and now he's all over the newer ones.

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Wednesday, 10 May 2023 16:53 (two years ago)

agreed, it is fantastic.
out of a random urge, i listened to disc 1 earlier.
absolutely hit the spot.

So I knew a tour with Lamb of God was coming up, but apparently some collaborative music? At least one song with the two bands is due soon:

Looks like Brent Hinds is leaving the band, but they are going to continue on. His guitar and vocals are my favorite elements in their music, so it's hard to see how continuing without him will pan out.

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Friday, 7 March 2025 18:08 (one year ago)

I was about to say, that seems hard to manage.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 7 March 2025 18:15 (one year ago)

Agreed, a big loss.

better than ezra collective soul asylum (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 7 March 2025 18:26 (one year ago)

Going back to the early days, I had the impression that he was a difficult person to work with. The amount of singing he's done on their albums has dropped steadily over the years. I don't know if that has to do with his relationship with the band or if he just had fewer vocal lines to contribute. It's been a bummer for me because I like his voice much better than the other two.

Muad'Doob (Moodles), Friday, 7 March 2025 18:33 (one year ago)

Any guesses why he left? The band's statement lacked details (putting it mildly).

Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Friday, 7 March 2025 19:08 (one year ago)

Pure speculation of course, but hard not to fill in the blanks without more info…. But Brann posted an Instagram video recently (though, tbf, no idea when it was recorded) and he had a black eye. Given previous things I’ve heard about Brent being difficult, well my mind put the two together. I certainly hope not, but that statement is quite vague.

better than ezra collective soul asylum (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 7 March 2025 19:29 (one year ago)

Hinds has a long reputation for getting in bar fights, saying really caustic shit in interviews, etc., etc. I'm surprised he lasted as long as he did; he seems like a fairly self-destructive guy. (Societal evolution be damned — face tattoos are still a giant red flag, sorry.)

Instead of create and send out, it pull back and consume (unperson), Friday, 7 March 2025 20:10 (one year ago)

Pretty amazing run by these guys. I grew up with Troy’s little brother. Got to see them at really small venue in Athens around 2003. They let my friends band, General Patton and the Unicorns, open for them.

Heez, Friday, 7 March 2025 20:52 (one year ago)

Reading a lot of posts on Reddit, it sounds like Brent has been pretty openly losing interest in the band for many years, so I guess this was due. It'll be interesting to see what they do next.

better than ezra collective soul asylum (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 7 March 2025 21:19 (one year ago)

I saw them at the tiny Glasgow Cathouse the week Leviathan came out.

Toshirō Nofune (The Seventh ILXorai), Friday, 7 March 2025 22:08 (one year ago)

Troy's my favourite singer in Mastodon, not sure if that's a common opinion.

chap, Saturday, 8 March 2025 23:05 (one year ago)

Probably just pure coincidence, but Jéssica Falchi, guitarist from Crypta announced Monday she was leaving the band but that she'd see fans "on the road" soon. Then later that day she posted a video on Facebook of her playing "Megalodon".

better than ezra collective soul asylum (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 12 March 2025 14:03 (one year ago)

she is an absolutely killer guitarist and had a great live presence in Crypta. sucks she left that band to be honest but would certainly look forward to her being in Mastodon if it did happen.

Hmmmmm (jamiesummerz), Wednesday, 12 March 2025 14:29 (one year ago)

Yeah she's great and I like her a lot, don't think I would have considered her for Mastodon before I saw that. But now, it wouldn't be the worst move they could make (especially since I saw people on reddit kicking around Zakk Wylde joining).

better than ezra collective soul asylum (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 12 March 2025 14:37 (one year ago)

They just played a show with Ben Eller, a guy who makes guitar tutorial videos on YouTube, subbing in.

Sad news

Man, I’d seen multiple headlines throughout the day and not investigated as I wasn’t ever a huge fan of Mastodon but I didn’t realize until now it was THE guy

Slim is an Alien, Thursday, 21 August 2025 23:02 (seven months ago)

that's terrible news. i didn't stick with them through the years, but remission and leviathan are tremendous records. in my early days of trying to understand metal as a complete outsider to it those records were really important to me.

call all destroyer, Friday, 22 August 2025 01:37 (seven months ago)

yeah -- I checked out around the time of Crack the Skye but Leviathan esp. was a real moment, I saw them on that tour (they did an encore, which they said was rare, and played Thin Lizzy's "Emerald") and the feeling that they were heading someplace big was palpable

J Edgar Noothgrush (Joan Crawford Loves Chachi), Friday, 22 August 2025 01:43 (seven months ago)

There's an argument to be made that Leviathan is the best metal-qua-metal album of the 21st Century.

moist corn kernels emerging fully intact in your diarrhea (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 22 August 2025 02:02 (seven months ago)

xxxpost - earlier this year the band announced they were parting ways with Hinds by mutual decision, but later he started posting these screeds on social media about them firing him. he was, by a lot of reports not in a good headspace, which makes this all the more sad. aiui he was about to tour Europe with one of his side project bands.

those of y’all that checked out early should really play Hushed and Grim, the latest, it’s not on the level of Remission or Leviathan (nor is it meant to be really), but tons of great songs. Brent sings lead on “The Beast”, which hit hard on another spin tonight

better than ezra collective soul asylum (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 22 August 2025 02:10 (seven months ago)

Yeah, H&G is really good. I saw them on the Crack the Skye tour with High On Fire and Converge. It was the only “band plays the whole album” show I’ve ever seen and it ruled.

Instead of create and send out, it pull back and consume (unperson), Friday, 22 August 2025 03:11 (seven months ago)

It is a rather shocking end and one that the wounds will never heal. It is tough when a long running group comes apart in strife and ill feelings that sadly will never have any other resolution.

Say one thing, they were a band that went from the basement/garage to playing some of the biggest stages in the world doing their own thing. Whether you dig their music or not, that is somewhat notable.

Mastodon were a big ILM band, I learned about them here and they were discussed quite a bit.

Not that they need it now, and basically never did, but here's my 2007 Collegtown alt-weekly defense and celebration of them, when some metal purists were like, oh they're bringing the trendies in, they're not really metal anymore and never were: https://mycolone.blogspot.com/2025/07/mastodon-polymathic-rawkissers-of.html They were coming to town, Columbus OH, so I took the opp.

dow, Friday, 22 August 2025 17:57 (seven months ago)

Remission - Leviathan - Blood Mountain - Crack the Skye was an incredible, incredible run.

This might sound weird, but every time I saw Mastodon after 2010, their live mix was abysmal. Trebly, not heavy, kind of quiet. Even as recently as the Hushed & Grim tour.

A. Begrand, Friday, 22 August 2025 19:37 (seven months ago)

truly amazing first 4 albums. I saw them play the pitchfork fest in Chicago right around Blood Mountain and it was easily one of the biggest highlights of the whole thing.

gman59, Friday, 22 August 2025 19:41 (seven months ago)

The only album they put out since then that seemed weak was The Hunter, I'd say the rest are all very solid.

whimsical skeedaddler (Moodles), Friday, 22 August 2025 19:51 (seven months ago)

A Facebook post from Mikael Åkerfeldt of Opeth:

"Brent Hinds is gone. An incredible musician. A force of nature. Our friend. My friend. I got the news today from the Mastodon boys as I was having coffee with my mother and her partner. They’re talking about their plans for the upcoming weekend, but I couldn’t really hear what they were saying, to be honest. I was (and still am) overwhelmed by shock. I reached out to the boys in my band delivering the tragic news and my phone has been buzzing every 10 seconds since. There’s so much to be said about Brent. We’ve spend so much time together with him on the road. I like to think we got to know each other quite well. Brent demanded attention (and got it) every time he stepped into our dressing room or bus, which was quite often, I'd might add. Fred and him would jam backstage. I’d keep an eye on him/them and their usual tour-shenanigans to the point where Brent started calling me ”Dad”, and I was calling him ”Son”.

I have so many memories of him, most of which I can sum up as ”good times”. We often talked about stage nerves. How nervousness can be good, but also, if bad, how it can hinder your performance. The latter sensation manifested itself as a fictional person: ”Peter”. Brent would go: ”Peter was on stage tonight, and that fucker sucks ass” when he had a bad show.

It’s too soon to grieve I suppose, this hasn’t sunk in at all. I only just heard about this tragedy 5 hours ago. It’s beyond devastating, and judging from what’s being said on our private Opeth group-chat I know I can speak for the whole band.

The ”Dad-Son” thing stuck over the years. I last saw Brent when he came to our show in Atlanta (October 22, 2024). He walks in and goes ”What’s up Pops?”. It’s a very, very bright memory but it makes me numb with sadness right now, thinking about it.

We’d like to offer our warmest and most loving condolences to his family and friends, colleagues, fans, and of course to the whole Mastodon inner circle. The incredible band that was instrumental for making us and the world aware of the phenomenon that is Brent Hinds. Note that I can’t write about him in past tense just yet. He still ”is”.

I’ve included a photo of myself and Brent from our last tour together. I fail to remember where it was taken, but I remember we're singing along to Van Halen’s ”5150”. Right there, is exactly how I will remember him. Always.

Brent Hinds, rest in peace.

Love from your friends in Opeth
