jk_ (jk@gabba), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

As Diwali and Clappas are already taken, I'm going for Masterpiece

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 18:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate that mangling.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 28 May 2003 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

stalag. or do i not understand the question ;-)

ron (ron), Thursday, 29 May 2003 01:44 (twenty-two years ago)

To my mind what sets apart "Diwali" and "Masterpiece" is not the riddim itself (although it's easy to make a case for the former), but rather that Lenky goes to the trouble of coming up with multiple distinctive sounding arrangements to go on top, which is why I guess the riddims themselves are so basic (cf. "Bollywood", which is an incredibly intricate arrangement-as-riddim, but which almost never varies). Like, half the fun with "Get Busy", "No Letting Go", "Galang Gal" etc. is how different each one sounds from the others.

Of the recent riddims I'm partial to "Knock Out", which sounds like Diwali-meets-garage-bounce, and is generally just all around nutty. Search Buju Banton's "Five O".

99 Red Balloons

Lynskey (Lynskey), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh

Kris (aqueduct), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

my new favorite is "sars", with "sign" just behind it

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

there seems to be some sort of relationship between boring functionality of the name vs. quality of riddim but i haven't worked it out yet.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

(i.e. none of the really crazily named ones - "puppy water", "r2d2" - have been very good.)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

(though i suppose "diwali" is nicely "mysterious")

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

"good to go" right now wicked flamenco flourishes and allsorts...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 21:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 21:44 (twenty-two years ago)

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

surely trife riddim?

Oh there's too many great ones to boil it down but right now I'm loving Kashmir and Bad Kalic and Rebirth (Sean Paul's "Close To Me" is a better pop song than anything on his actual album!)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 12 August 2003 23:33 (twenty-two years ago)

What is this about?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 04:17 (twenty-two years ago)

It's like this, Sundar.

Tim, is that "Close to Me" of "Cure Riddim" fame?

Sonny A. (Keiko), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 05:16 (twenty-two years ago)

dancehall and grime threads guarantee I will never leave ilm

nnnh oh oh nnnh nnnh oh (James Blount), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 05:21 (twenty-two years ago)

No, Sonny - I was excited at first too but Sean Paul's "Close To Me" is on the "Rebirth Riddim" and is a totally different song (excellent though!). In fact I can't even be sure that the riddim that is based on The Cure is based on "Close To Me" (I haven't heard it; read about it in The Face where I think they pinpointed that track; plus I wouldn't be surprised if it was an indirect result of Aussie group Baggsmen doing a dancehall version of "Close To Me" last year)

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 12:49 (twenty-two years ago)

please please please listen to sopranos riddim! it's the best of the year closely followed by sars. i recommend sean paul's dream dream dream. if i had to only pick one it would be bollywood. i love the disregard they give to the original by putting a really happy bouncy bassline over the top. addictive is a really sad song.

sean g, Wednesday, 13 August 2003 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah Bollywood is great although the riddim album is a bit of a stretch. Sizzla's "Heat Is On" is fantastic in particular - why doesn't he do more nasty modern dancehall?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 13:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Because he also believes in higher powers unlike you, oh corrupt minion of Babylon. (Or something.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

addiction by tanya stephens is the best track on the bollywood rhythm easily, it's absolutely filthy!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 13 August 2003 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

yes the cure riddim is 'close to me'

Coolie Dance! Coolie Dance! Coolie Dance! Profoundly offensively named, yet wicked. Check Sizzla on this one. So very very nice.

I forgot how much I love "Queen of the Minstrel"--there's some new stuff out on it. Very sweet, but nice as well.

cybele (cybele), Tuesday, 2 September 2003 17:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Did someone actually call their track 'SARS'?
I still hate the name so much more then even 'Emo'
