unquestionably one of australia's greatest rock bands and a classic live act to boot.

They rocked my world a bunch of times when I got to Sydney in 93... Sound as Ever has some amazing tracks on it, I still get a huge kick out of Berlin Chair and Adams Rib when I hear them.

I picked up at a You Am I concert and had quite a nice time thank you very much... does that count?

Their first three albums are truly great records - specially Hi Fi Way. They've done a lot for up-and-coming bands.

'what i don't know about you' is a very fine pop song.

yep, can't argue with the comment that opened this thread. first four albums are brilliant though the last two pale a little in comparison and their sound is getting a bit too meat-and-potatoes. maybe getting the second guitarist wasn't the best move, i don't know. i found the bonus disc of acoustic stuff for the 'dress me slowly' release more worthwhile than the release proper (check out 'the smokin popes' for one of the best on-tour-and-in-the-van songs ever written and 'paragon cafe' for one of the saddest odes to a dead compadre ever written). best you am i release is 'hourly daily', a beautiful, shameless, eloquent celebration of suburbia. i love the australianess of the lyrics - tim rogers has a terrific writer's flair with a great sense of place, much more so than someone like paul kelly, who tends to get most of the bouquets when it comes to discussions about culturally-relevant lyrics in australia. the band have always packed a punch both live and on record. they were at least as good as the strokes when i saw them on the same bill in sydney over a year ago. and aside from all that, they're pretty much the only band from that exciting golden era of left-field australian bands crossing over into the mainstream (early 90s) who actually survived.

Lisa Miller recently covered Rogers' "Words For Sadness" on her (excellent) 'Car Tape' album, alongside tunes by Townes Van Zant, Gene Clark, Charlie Rich and Touissaint McCall...it fits right in, in fact is one of the best songs on the record.

Can't think of much that would be nicer to say than that...

Search "Jewels and Bullets", mostly for the structure of the song.

i think their latest album is their best since 'hourly daily'

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 29 May 2003 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

They have the best band name ever.

Well, you asked us to say something nice. It didn't have to be true, did it?

paulhw (paulhw), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

They're better than The Vines. And Tim Rogers is something of a dreamboat, according to some of my friends.

I saw them in a tiny club in Albany a million years ago. One of them hit on me after the show, but ran away after I (not at all maliciously) asked them how touring with the BJM was. Heh.

the river fleet, Wednesday, 28 January 2004 15:23 (twenty-two years ago)

They inspired Silverchair.
