Do big hits get in the way of career longevity?

Baby Bird had a gigantic hit but, in spite of making great records still, no-one seems to care much about him these days (apart from me). Is this a case of a big hit acting as albatross? Or has he successfully kept his original following? Conversely, if Momus had had a big Pet Shop Boys-type hit with 'Hairstyle of the Devil' way back when, would he still be so acclaimed today or would it be 'God, is that Hairstyle bloke still going?' Or would Robyn Hitchcock still have his select following if he'd done a Lloyd Cole and had a hit or two? You get the drift.

It's a double edged sword - would the artist in question HAVE any chance of longevity without that big hit?

I know Marc Almond despises Tainted Love - but without it, would Soft Cell ever have broken to the mainstream and would he still have the opportunity to record his solo material?

"Creep" almost became an albatross for Radiohead. I remember an interview w/ Jonny right after The Bends was released, where he said he ran out of ideas to play on the guitar. Then OK Computer came out, and the rest is history. I think that, in the end, it all comes down to real talent and creativity...

"Do big hits get in the way of career longevity?"

Not when the artist gets a royalty check.
