when noel was in nme just after the original
mike flowers wonderwall cover he said
'i'd like to see him do that with nine inch nails'
which i thought was really pertinent until
'hurt' by johnny cash, which is basically how that
very thing would have sounded.

I think you're being a bit harsh on Cash there. He's a million miles away from easy listening.

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 30 May 2003 07:16 (twenty-two years ago)

The point is more that Noel was all "See, I can write proper songs and all that because they can be reinterpreted by others and stand that transformation unlike anything Trent can write ha ha." Keep in mind that this was said during that period from 1995 through 1997 when the amount of cocaine being used by Oasis probably fed that tendency of self-belief a bit.

two years pass...
Been listening to In A Groovy Place again recently and it's stood up remarkably well over the intervening decade - the arrangements are genuinely inventive (esp. the Velvets medley) and the whole thing stops just on the right side of camp. According to my friend G, who played drums with the Pops, Mr Flowers is something of a recluse these days and possibly not in a great state of mind. He does have a website but it hasn't been updated since 2003.

Breakdown possibly sparked off by being rejected for the 1998 Eurovision Song Contest, it says here.

Sorry, here.

Ah, that "Leisureland" concept that was going around for a while.

That's really sad. I liked The Pops.
