Fairy tale music

Do you know any songs or musicians that sound as though they could be illustrating or telling a fairy tale? It doesn't have to be a happy fairy tale as long as it's fantastic.

Uh, Bjork? Nick Drake? Maybe even Jethro Tull?

My beloved Jobriath called himself a "true fairy", but I think he was talking about something else...

Some Fairport Convention, and likely a sickening amount of All About Eve. *trills*

Ned Raggett, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Anything on Mike Alway's Reverie label, except possibly the Maria Napoleon one about the cow...Momus, eh? You can't take him anywhere...

Fairport, yes: interestingly Julianne Regan, who has always nauseated me (except briefly when I was about 9 and found that sort of wispy sexlessness appealing) was last sighted supporting them ...

But, yes: yer whole Fairport / Incredible String Band / Pentangle axis looms large here as far as I'm concerned. Nick Drake too emotionally down-to-earth: Ian Anderson only in a *very* dislikeable self-righteous sense.

Daevid Allen certainly sounds like he's telling a fairy tale on 'Now is the happiest time of your life'

I almost forgot, Tyrannasaurus Rex-era Marc Bolan, who actually DID tell fairy tales with some of his songs.

Sean, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah, that was define the height of Bolan poesy. Then he calmed down.

Does Hobbit-Rock count? Rush? And later predecessors, C-Average... roll the eight sided dice!

Jason, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Time to invoke the Dream Warriors once more.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

that one barry adamson song that i always used to put on mixtapes to freak people out.

ethan, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

King Diamond, or Mortiis... only the fairly tale would revolve around a stillborn baby named Abigail or a horrible troll disembowling women in a subterranean grotto... more Brothers Grimm that Hans Christian Andersen.

Andy, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Vermillion Kisses... I always used to put that one in the middle of mixtapes, too.

Syd Barrett & Pink Floyd - The Gnome.

Joe, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Queen, especially on Queen II (such a deceptively bland title)- feat. "Ogre Battle", "The March of the Black Queen", and, of course. "The Fairy Feller''s Master Stroke".

Or Rasputina.

Arthur, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

And jeez, whaddabout Donovan? He even had an album called "Fairytale". I love him, though.

Kerry Keane, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

David Bowie (see Labrynth)

Mike Hanley, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Kinks' "Phenomenal Cat" and "Wicked Annabella". Frank Zappa's "The Adventures of Greggery Peccary".

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Tuesday, 24 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh yeah, Zappa's "Titties and Beer" is a fairy-tale of sorts. A damn funny one, too.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Tuesday, 24 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Officer Omar of the Zappa Police enters, beats Tadeusz down/cuffs him/drag him down to the slammer: "Zapa ain't funny, son. You should know better by now: It's against the law to like Zappa around here, jeeezzzz." ;)

On-topic: fairy tales in music are shit unless it's 'Isobel' by Björk and through neat association all of The Gentle Waves. What was that song by Turbonegro again? 'Hobbit Motherfucker'? That one on principal is a great fairy tale.

Omar, Tuesday, 24 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

B-b-but it mentions STRAVINSKY! That's FUNNY! Cuz Zappa liked Stravinsky! Geddit? Geddit?

Aw, shucks.

Josh, Tuesday, 24 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Naked City.

nathalie, Tuesday, 24 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Magma's 'Ork Alarm'

dave q, Tuesday, 24 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Happy Rhodes - everything. But especially "The Wretches Gone Awry".

Tim, Tuesday, 24 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Rush, 'Cinderella Man'?

dave q, Tuesday, 24 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Thank you. The downloading has begun.

Iphis, Tuesday, 24 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Broadcast & St. Etienne. There are loads more, some of which have already been mentioned and some of which I'm too tired right now to recall.

Nicole, Tuesday, 24 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ladybug Transistor.

If it happened to be a *musical* of a fairy tale. But good. Not like the Broadway Cinderella, or anything.

Nitsuh, Tuesday, 24 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

of montreal, kevin barnes is a big kid and he creates ridiculous and cartoonish characters in nearly every song.

keith, Tuesday, 24 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

American Analog Set: andrew kenny's voice+ farfisa= drowsy, childlike ambience within which the everyday becomes a fairytale. There are even fairytale references on the 'Golden Band'.

Mogwai's '2 Rights Makes 1 Wrong'.

charles, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Kate Bush

Madchen, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Andy Bell on Erasure's "Blue Savannah".

Robin Carmody, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Prokofiev, Tchaikovsky, Bartok, Mussorgsky, just for starters...

X. Y. Zedd, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You could do a kick-ass modern fairy tale soundtrack by using Ultra Vivid Scene's _Rev_.
