James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 30 May 2003 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

At first I thought this meant "50 Cent's songs"

Cypress Hill's "Hand on the Pump," off their first album, samples Gene Chandler's "Duke of Earl" from '62 -- but that's doo-wop, so, uh, nevermind.

Sean Thomas (sgthomas), Friday, 30 May 2003 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

bone thugs

jess (dubplatestyle), Friday, 30 May 2003 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

>>beastie boys - 'she's crafty'<<

what does this sample besides "the ocean" by led zep (who weren't from the '50s, despite their love of "book of love" by the monotones)?

shoot, i was gonna say "hand on the pump," too!

the Beasties do sample Johnny Cash's "Fulsom Prison Blues" in one of the tracks from Paul's Boutique.

oh they sample the theme from Mr. Ed too but that's the 60's I guess.

any other doo-whops? i remeber when CH did hand on the pump @ lollpalooza & the crowd went insane. loudest reaction of the whole show.
my drummer and i are thinking of covering some of these old songs~cause no indy/garage/experimental bands have. am i wrong?

kephm, Friday, 30 May 2003 18:34 (twenty-two years ago)

i mean joan jett covered 'crimson & clover' & aerosmith covered 'walking in the sand' but these are old songs themselves

kephm, Friday, 30 May 2003 18:35 (twenty-two years ago)

wasn't there a remake of the Coaster's "Poison Ivy?" I'm not sure if there was actually a sample, though...

Will (will), Friday, 30 May 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

the 50's are not the 60's dudes

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 30 May 2003 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

another one: mc hammer - u can't touch this

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 30 May 2003 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

>>another one: mc hammer - u can't touch this <<

again, what does this sample besides "Super Freak," from 1981???

does the Fat Boys' version of "Wipe Out" sample "Wipe Out"? Even if it did, that'd be 1963, so it doesn't count. But ALT & the Lost Civilization sampling the Champs' 1958 "Tequila" in their own highly underrated song "Tequila" counts for sure.

chuck, Friday, 30 May 2003 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

the fat boys - 'the twist'

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 30 May 2003 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

is Blount really Callum?

kephm, Friday, 30 May 2003 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

"He's a Rebel" by Inspectah Deck

King Kobra (King Kobra), Friday, 30 May 2003 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Fugees' "Zealots" samples the Flamingoes' "I Only Have Eyes for You" (duh)

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 30 May 2003 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Not entirely clear on the vintage of this, but Biggie's "Kick in the Door" samples "I Put a Spell on You."

chris smith, Friday, 30 May 2003 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Didn't the Dust Brothers actually do all the music on Pauls Boutique, not the Beastie Boys?

googling to confirm this brought up this excellent page...

Paul's Boutique samples and references list

Explains why it's better than anything else put out under the Beastie Boys name... I've always thought of those particular kind of tom fills as a Dust Brothers signature...

"The Influence" by Jurassic 5 has a nice doo-wop sample which sounds very '50s.

Orange, Saturday, 31 May 2003 08:41 (twenty-two years ago)

That is a great sample, I think it's the Hi Los... yeah, it is.
