What do you make of the lyrics to this song?

Aaron A., Friday, 30 May 2003 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought it was just an excuse to sing "purple rain! purple rain!" over and over again

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Friday, 30 May 2003 18:31 (twenty-two years ago)

he doesn't want to be her lover. he just wants to be her friend. but the friendship has to end. but still he longs to lead her to and see her laughing/dancing/bathing in the Purple Rain. i mean wtf.

Aaron A., Friday, 30 May 2003 18:33 (twenty-two years ago)

it's a wakeup call to apollonia

James Blount (James Blount), Friday, 30 May 2003 18:39 (twenty-two years ago)

it's the nuclear sex apocalypse, dude. i mean, c'mon.

Ben Williams, Friday, 30 May 2003 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

it's all about shrooms mang

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 30 May 2003 18:57 (twenty-two years ago)

i concur with the nuclear sex apocalypse hypothesis

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Friday, 30 May 2003 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

"purple" = traditional color of royalty
"rain" = "reign"

From there, it all makes perfect sense.

o. nate (onate), Friday, 30 May 2003 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

or Prince being the purple one/sexfreak a veiled reference to golden showers

H (Heruy), Friday, 30 May 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Purple piss?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 30 May 2003 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

crap, i was really hoping someone would actually somehow answer the question somewhere in this thread.

I like the apocalypse angle, there's not a lot to back it up in the lyrics but who doesn't love a ballad of mixed feelings and the balance of friendship/lovership set against the end of the world? There's definitely a great feeling of finality and beautiful anguish to the whole affair.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 9 August 2012 18:34 (thirteen years ago)

don't forget 1999's "the sky was all purple there were people running every where" and his obsession with living til you see the Dawn. Lot of apocalypse-minded shit in this period.

da croupier, Thursday, 9 August 2012 18:36 (thirteen years ago)

Chewing on a piece of grass
Walking down the road
Tell me, how long you gonna stay here, Joe?
Some people say this town don't look good in snow
You don't care, I know

Ventura Highway in the sunshine
Where the days are longer
The nights are stronger than moonshine
You're gonna go I know

'Cause the free wind is blowin' through your hair
And the days surround your daylight there
Seasons crying no despair
Alligator lizards in the air, in the air

Did di di di dit ...

Wishin' on a falling star
Waitin' for the early train
Sorry boy, but I've been hit by purple rain
Aw, come on, Joe, you can always
Change your name
Thanks a lot, son, just the same

Ventura Highway in the sunshine
Where the days are longer
The nights are stronger than moonshine
You're gonna go I know

'Cause the free wind is blowin' through your hair
And the days surround your daylight there
Seasons crying no despair
Alligator lizards in the air, in the air

Did di di di dit ...

Isn't this about his breakup with tammy faye bakker?

wk, Thursday, 9 August 2012 19:13 (thirteen years ago)

i love that he got the phrase from America's Ventura Highway, I can see him digging that song

Iago Galdston, Thursday, 9 August 2012 23:38 (thirteen years ago)

it's kinda weird to think that the reason he picked purple was just because of the vikings probably

Jandek at the Disco (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 10 August 2012 00:00 (thirteen years ago)

he was still locking down the local fan base right before Purple Rain?

Iago Galdston, Friday, 10 August 2012 01:13 (thirteen years ago)

iago: no, not that point, but i think ppl from minnesota just think about purple a lot more than other ppl because of the vikings.....plus prince did that vikings rouser song a few years ago so he's a fan.

Jandek at the Disco (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 10 August 2012 01:39 (thirteen years ago)

oh ok, gotcha--thanks Jandek

Iago Galdston, Friday, 10 August 2012 01:55 (thirteen years ago)

"all of my purple life,
I've been looking for a dame
that would want to be my wife..."

"Jamie Starr's a thief
It's time 2 fix your clock
Vanity 6 is so sweet
Now U can all take a bite of my purple rock"

It's no cobalt blue, but purple is cool.

nicky lo-fi, Friday, 10 August 2012 15:36 (thirteen years ago)

three years pass...

the third verse of purple rain has always seemed like it doesnt belong there. like its from some 60s revolution song but has somehow found its way into a song about regrets at the end of a relationship.

StillAdvance, Thursday, 5 May 2016 17:26 (nine years ago)

yeah for a song that's been universally embraced as anthem it's actually kind of cryptic and obscure

Purple Rain (album) Purple Rain is the sixth studio album by American recording artist Prince, the first to feature his backing band The Revolution, and is the soundtrack album to the 1984 film of the same name. It was released on June 25, 1984

my favourite version of this, apart from the 20 min version he was doing on the PR tour, is the version on a rehearsal or soundcheck (i had it on a neon rendezvous bootleg). its made up on the spot, just him repeating 'gotta shake this feeling' over and over, with a few lines from another lonely xmas (which are a bit WTF), but something about that one line, and how its about looking for an escape, or release, just fits the music so well, maybe better than the proper version (though obv it could benefit from some actual verses!)

StillAdvance, Thursday, 5 May 2016 19:26 (nine years ago)

I did wonder if there was any likelihood to that reign pun. Him being Prince and all. Was he looking forward to be king.
Or just a bad punster.
