Why is everybody so big on that Sean Paul single?

It reminds me a bit of that Ali G/Shaggy single from last year. SP doesn't seem to have a particularly distinctive or attractive voice: the lyrics are 'functional' at best; the music/rhythm doesn't seem esp. dynamic or different or pacesetting.

What am I missing?

(the R. Kelly remix is a real true 'grower')

(god the Dandy Warhols are shit)

Like anything else popular, it's catchy.

i loved the dancing in the 'gimme the light' and 'get busy' videos before i got around to actually liking the songs.

because it sounds like keerazy raiders of the lost ark atari 2600 music!

the wayne wonder track is better...what a weeper!

spizzazzz is right, listening to sean paul for long periods of time is like being inspected by giant alien insects who wish to know the secrets of human feeling

haha!

Substitute the R Kelly remix for the Sean Paul track (which is just manifestly fantastic) and you'd have the question that's been on my mind for the past month.

is right

maybe you have to see the get busy video every day for a month like i did before it hits you that your body mind and soul have been taken over by a raggamuffin in gangsta's clothing. plus, that organ sound or whatever the hell it is is some kinda wunnerful.

''SP doesn't seem to have a particularly distinctive or attractive voice''

no idea abt lyrics but i like this. is it bcz its too 'flashy' andrew? Just lots of technique but somehow he forgets to communicate anything across.

I like both sean paul and r.kelly (though r.kelly's video gets quite weird: why is there a 180 degree shot of his head?).

haven't heard any dandy warhols but I don't wish to. bcz they are the worst. they must die etc etc.

Dan is otm, I can't get into the R Kelly thing.

Sean Paul on the other hand is rushy as hell for hiphop, his voice is totally refreshing and it's got this mounting tension to it which I love in party records. Obviously that's a big thing in house too. But that's not a qualification, Get Busy is too good for that.

Production is wicked, I can't get enough of those twisting whining synths. Maybe that's the organ Scott mentions? Maybe it isn't a synth at all. Who cares, it rocks!

five years pass...

It's such a shame that there's no Pop music that sounds like We Be Burnin' right now, the autotune stuff would fit right in with the Kanye/CB/TI trend, but the the housey keys and congas and that airy production are something I'm really missing these days. Also, that chorus.

I know, right?, Monday, 17 November 2008 16:51 (seventeen years ago)
