Sky Sunlight Saxon is a musical genius whose greatness has been ignored for far too long on this board and elsewhere (RIP June 2009)

There, I said it. Anyone agree?

roger adultery (roger adultery), Friday, 30 May 2003 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

of course. i agree totally. i love the seeds, i love how its all bass and treble and nothing in between, like 92 era uk breakbeat hardcore. the seeds also sound like a scooby doo house band. what more could you want?

the house crew, Saturday, 31 May 2003 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a strong dislike of the word genius. But yeah, the Seeds were certainly something. Would be classic for "Up in Her Room" alone. The Flower Punk box is pretty essential. Saxon's voice, those maniacal keyboards burrowing into your head ... it all made for a very trippy experience. I've always been too scared to touch the solo stuff. Is any of it worth checking?

Hey roger, have you heard the new Neil Hagerty lp? SHould I go see him tomorrow?

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 31 May 2003 00:43 (twenty-two years ago)

purple electricity to thread. the jokes on you sky.

jack cole (jackcole), Saturday, 31 May 2003 00:49 (twenty-two years ago)

solo stuff incredible - Purple Electricity is INZANE and Heavenly Erath (recorded on the day of my birth) is also a favorite

as for the 'Hag, I just interviewed him for Your Flesh...the new record RULES. Equal parts Thank you / Accelerator plus some way out dub, Black Mass style synth, and live tracks. It's his first very 'complete' solo record, and live, if Dan Brown and Tim Barnes are backing him, you'd be a fool to miss it.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Saturday, 31 May 2003 03:22 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll second roger on the new hag lp -- fantastic, folding back together the RTX and his last two solo albums.

jack cole (jackcole), Saturday, 31 May 2003 04:35 (twenty-two years ago)

well fuck me! I guess I will have to check out some of the solo material after all. Also, it looks like I'll be at that Hagerty show. god I love that guy.

OK, I gotta cut and paste one of my favorite ever posts on ILM, from the Simon Reynolds is a gobshite thread:

who the fuck is this limey simon reynolds anyway? never has he spoke of sam the sham or kiss, as far as I can tell. never has he wrestled with another human being in the dirt. never has he listened to both Dust albums. never has he said ONE THING THAT IS FUNNY. he is a jerk, like most limey critics. every CREEM writer worth his salt knows that music writers from ENGLAND ARE THE ABSOLUTE WORST.... and they are the very reason we have all had to endure the likes of Oasis and Radiohead and, heaven help us, RAVES!! Simon Reynolds is nothing, I mean nothing: think of this--once i interviewed Sky Saxon who was undergoing a blood transfusion in Hawaii and he was so feeble he could barely talk on the phone and he talked about how shriveled his cock was and how he hoped one day that shriveled cock would become hard again so that he could once again perform "Mr. Farmer" with the fervor in which it was intended: well, Mr. Simon Reynolds IS NOT EVEN WORTH THAT SHRIVELED COCK OF SKY SAXON...

-- Robot A. Hull (xavie...), May 22nd, 2001.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 31 May 2003 04:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Smash Mouth's "Diggin' Your Scene" completely lifts the riff from the Seeds' "Tripmaker". It's a carbon copy. Well, except they don't copy the Seeds' use of the slide whistle (which the Seeds just got from Dylan anyway), and of course the brief use of a "speak & spell" vocal is all their own. I always wondered why I kind of liked Smash Mouth.

Also, "No Escape" is a killer song. Same song as "Pushin' Too Hard" but I think I like it better due to the more chant-like chorus and the fucked-up keyboard break which is six bars of the same notes. Haha, man the Seeds were wonderful.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 07:25 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
Sorry if this feels like piling on, but come on. Reynolds in Rip It Up: "The Fall tranced out to the primal monotony of Can, the methedrine scorched white noise of the Velvet Underground, and sixties 'punkadelic' bands like the Seeds (who had one keyboard riff, which they endlessly recycled)." Try listening to the records plz.

Jesus, I didnt' know Robot A. Hull once posted here! (At least once, anyway.)

I remember Sky Saxon circa 1985 claiming that the reason Michael Jackson was so popular was because his name rhymed with "Saxon"!

Seek: The live (or "live") version of "Up In Her Room" (a poor man's "Sister Ray".)

i agree with whoever made the 2nd post in this thread

the only band anything like the seeds, is Cosmic Michael. just as great, in a slightly different way

Didn't he play on some of the YaHoWa 13 records? (which I still haven't heard dammit)

Unlimited Toothpicker (eman), Monday, 15 May 2006 01:51 (nineteen years ago)

Yes, but I think it was stuff that only came out in the box as opposed to actual albums proper.

The Seeds made classic records. Sky did a UK tour a year or two back with a great band, and remains a hypnotically intense performer:"This song is about the fools on Capitol Hill. It's called . . 'Fools on Capitol Hill'" What a guy!

R.I.P. Sky Saxon
By Joe Gross | Thursday, June 25, 2009, 10:18 AM
Sky Saxon, founder of the brilliant ’60s garage band the Seeds, died Thursday morning at St. David’s Hospital.

The newly minted Austinite was hospitalized Monday with what doctors suspected was an infection of the internal organs, but cause of death has not yet been released.

Saxon fell ill last Thursday, but performed at Saturday at Antone’s.

Sky’s wife Sabrina Saxon posted news of his passing on Facebook this morning: “Sky has passed over and YaHoWha is waiting for him at the gate. He will soon be home with his Father. I’m so sorry I couldn’t keep him here with us. More later. I’m sorry.”

We are sorry as well.

I'd seen the movie, but I'd forgotten what the sequence they appear in was about. The quality is awful, but I found it sharply poignant to see this tonight.

Blasting "Raw & Alive", an old favorite. Love the way the audience screams become part of the music. (I was always told they were dubbed on anyway!) "The Gypsy Plays His Drums" is incredible.

Soukesian, Friday, 26 June 2009 13:43 (sixteen years ago)

From a recent Billy Corgan newsletter sent out to fans:

"So I'll get to my point. This website is going to change. It is going to transform into something that is consistent with the concepts of love, grace, and community. We are not looking backwards anymore, only forward. I for one am willing to stand for something good here, in this little corner of the blogosphere, and say it's time.

What makes the things I'm saying here even more real to me is the passing of my dear friend Sky Sunlight Saxon. Sky lived everyday with the concept of LOVE as his guide, and he walked the talk. He was a spiritual warrior who would tell me that Yahowa knew the beauty of our hearts, and that musicians were the living prophets of the world. So in Sky's memory I am going to re-dedicate this website to represent the things he cared about most; love, life, music, his spiritual family, and the protection of all God's creatures, big and small."

God Bless 'em - 'The Bottomless Pit' (band made up former Silkworm - they know loss, huh?, Seam, .22 members) covered 'A Faded Picture' at Schubas last night in Chicago. I hadn't heard that Saxon had died - very sad - pulling out 'Web of Sound' today....

BlackIronPrison, Monday, 29 June 2009 11:25 (sixteen years ago)

Does Corgan just drop names that sound cool, or.....

The Seeds were all I listened to for about two and a half years. I don't know what got into me.
Future is my favorite. Painted Doll is just nutso.

I know nothing of Saxon's other work, however, is it nothing but a bunch of collecto-crap?

I love you too Billy. Now shut up and stop sucking.

I gotta admit, he heeded my words. Took a lot of photos at the tribute show last night but search for all the inevitable YouTubes that must be up now for the various performances -- Billy's contributions included a great three-song set fronting the ad hoc Spirits of the Sky near the start (and yes, they did the song they're named after), a good solo guitar turn with the Electric Prunes, playing bass with Sky Aquarian in a YaHoWa33 set and doing "Can't Seem To Make You Mine" during the concluding Seeds set.

And it was a great, great set -- what the configuration of Seeds players were during the end (and it kept rotating a bit), they were kicking some *major* ass, I kept thinking that Mudhoney would kill to be seeing it and figured that the one person missing from the various guests who would have loved to have been there was Lux Interior, just because I could see him going crazy with some of the songs as well as acting appropriately lewdly with the go-go dancers.

Yeah. What Roger said.

Heck, I even like Future by the Seeds. A lot. The Seeds jamming with the addition of tubas & things like that is so transcendentally WRONG that it becomes Too RIGHT.

Sky's LPs from after the Seeds are uneven, but all are interesting & worth a listen. Firewall is particularly good. The one with Purple Electricity (basically Redd Kross) is also cool. I guess the only thing he's done that I didn't care for was A Spoonful of Seedy Blues.
