how do you separate the concept from metal baby or december from sidewinder or verisimilitude from sparky's dream?

at a pinch, star sign.

Chris Radford (Chris Radford), Saturday, 31 May 2003 03:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd second Star Sign. First one I heard, great time of my life, classic pop single.

Trayce (trayce), Saturday, 31 May 2003 03:09 (twenty-two years ago)

gotta agree trayce. the day a mate introduced me to the fannies and matthew sweet was sweet indeed. it was like "ahhhhhhhhhhhhh now this is good. i measure all melodic pop against these guys. thanks Mic!

Chris Radford (Chris Radford), Saturday, 31 May 2003 03:32 (twenty-two years ago)

The only one that's stuck in my head to this day is "Everything Flows", but it's a good'un.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 31 May 2003 04:04 (twenty-two years ago)

they are such a melbourne band!

minna (minna), Saturday, 31 May 2003 05:00 (twenty-two years ago)

heh.

i choo-choo-choose "sparky's dream" or "everything flows"

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Saturday, 31 May 2003 05:31 (twenty-two years ago)

alcoholiday

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 31 May 2003 07:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Everyone wants to fuck with you - a b-side that exsists only on a scratchy 7" somewhere in a friend's closet in Canadaland.

doom-e (Jam), Saturday, 31 May 2003 07:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Everybody's Fool is a close second.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 31 May 2003 07:22 (twenty-two years ago)

"Neil Jung"
(but i'm going merely by the title here, don't recall the tune. similarly "Alcoholiday")

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Saturday, 31 May 2003 08:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Alcoholiday seconded

Lynskey (Lynskey), Saturday, 31 May 2003 11:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Neil Jung seconded.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 31 May 2003 11:28 (twenty-two years ago)

i got the title wrong - some people try to fuck with you.

doom-e (Jam), Saturday, 31 May 2003 11:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I amst mor indie than thouest.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Saturday, 31 May 2003 11:35 (twenty-two years ago)

alcoholiday thirded

beaty (beaty), Sunday, 1 June 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, definitely alcoholiday. um, fourthed, if that's a word.

guava, Sunday, 1 June 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

alcoholiday fifthed.

though the concept, is pretty sentimental for the line " she don't use drugs but she does the pill" which i thought was pretty edgy when i was 14.

Carey (Carey), Sunday, 1 June 2003 16:39 (twenty-two years ago)

1) God Knows It's True
2) Star Sign (total chilton, lyrically)

Aaron A., Sunday, 1 June 2003 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

hard to choose one, alright. it's between alcoholiday and neil jung...

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Sunday, 1 June 2003 20:58 (twenty-two years ago)

"Alcoholiday", with a brief mention of "Broken", a b-side for "Ain't that enough?" which would have been far better closing "Songs from Northern Britain".

Rob M (Rob M), Monday, 2 June 2003 08:53 (twenty-two years ago)

December, or maybe ain't that enough, both great

chris (chris), Monday, 2 June 2003 11:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, "Alcoholiday" is the best. But if I'm being truthful I could listen to all of Bandwagonesque over and over again, it's hard to pick out one individual song.

Nicole (Nicole), Monday, 2 June 2003 11:48 (twenty-two years ago)

five years pass...

^^^^^ This. If I had to choose, at this moment, I guess The Concept. But Alcoholiday, December, Star Sign -- hell, all of Bandwagonesque -- could be my No. 1.

These days, more than anything else, I appreciate the basslines in Bandwagonesque.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 22 May 2009 01:25 (sixteen years ago)

Kickabout.

Lovely release! (sic), Friday, 22 May 2009 03:24 (sixteen years ago)

I like "Hang On" and I cannot lie.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Friday, 22 May 2009 03:41 (sixteen years ago)

Last week I've been jamming Bandwagonesque again, and I keep coming back to Is This Music.

Marty Innerlogic, Friday, 22 May 2009 09:20 (sixteen years ago)

"is this music" - the great lost match of the day highlights theme that never was

a somnambulist in an ambulance (r1o natsume), Friday, 22 May 2009 09:23 (sixteen years ago)

But it was Match of the Day highlights theme - used to accompany goals rundown before Life of Riley, IIRC.

Favourite songs ... Broken or Did I Say?

ithappens, Friday, 22 May 2009 09:46 (sixteen years ago)

in answer to the thread question, no.

grand prix > the rest, though.

calstars, Sunday, 24 June 2018 07:14 (seven years ago)

“Everything Flows” is heaven.

Chris L, Sunday, 24 June 2018 07:50 (seven years ago)

I believe it is possible. Not sure I ever liked anything more than "So Far Gone", though most of the surrounding A-sides up to perhaps "Star Sign" are but whisker behind it methinks.

Nag! Nag! Nag!, Sunday, 24 June 2018 10:06 (seven years ago)

I was about to vote for Star SIgn but I see I already voted for Alcoholiday above.

Yerac, Sunday, 24 June 2018 14:00 (seven years ago)

i'm seriously considering flying from the West Coast to England to see them play their Creation Years concerts in November.

someone convince me i should

alpine static, Monday, 25 June 2018 00:40 (seven years ago)

or shouldn't

alpine static, Monday, 25 June 2018 00:40 (seven years ago)

I vote do it. They are simply class

Some people try to fuck with you - a b-side that exists only on a scratchy 7" somewhere in a friend's closet in Canadaland.
― doom-e (Jam), Saturday, May 31, 2003 7:20 AM (fifteen years ago)

Also on cd, on the In Bed with Marina compilation.

"Weightlifting", for a more recent track choice of favorite.

the body of a spider... (scampering alpaca), Monday, 25 June 2018 16:14 (seven years ago)

my pick: "I Don't Want Control Of You." Liked it even more when I found out NB wrote it about his daughter. Guess I'm just an old sentimental softie.

Paul Ponzi, Monday, 25 June 2018 17:22 (seven years ago)

"Traffic Jam" is a great b-side

rehab hot (rip van wanko), Monday, 25 June 2018 17:25 (seven years ago)

xp Is “Weightlifting” not Trashcan Sinatras? It’s a wonderful song all the same.

michaellambert, Monday, 25 June 2018 20:47 (seven years ago)

Argh, thank you. I should've posted on the "bands you always get confused", because those two, I do.

bit of a bummer. not sure if I'd go and see them again now

Colonel Poo, Monday, 20 August 2018 14:46 (seven years ago)

I'm seeing a couple of nights of this tour (one in Glasgow and that last one in London) but yeah... that's a third of the back catalogue :/

sktsh, Monday, 20 August 2018 16:30 (seven years ago)

he should join Tracyanne & Danny.

wayne trotsky (Simon H.), Monday, 20 August 2018 16:34 (seven years ago)

shitty, really glad i saw them when they were in town a couple years back

( ͡☉ ͜ʖ ͡☉) (jim in vancouver), Monday, 20 August 2018 16:46 (seven years ago)

these European shows will be a seriously bittersweet send-off now.

peeople seem to be split on whether they'd play his songs going forward, but i'm not sure why ... those are TFC songs. i suspect they'll play them. and it won't be the same, and it is a bummer, but these things happen. it's amazing they avoided it for this long.

alpine static, Monday, 20 August 2018 16:48 (seven years ago)

more BMX Bandits i hope

a roomba of one's own (rip van wanko), Monday, 20 August 2018 17:14 (seven years ago)

Yup... a lot of my favourite TFC songs were written by him, too.

Le Baton Rose (Turrican), Monday, 20 August 2018 17:44 (seven years ago)

Gerry wrote Kylie's Got A Crush On Us but Norman was officially in the band for several years and has sat in on quite a few recent Bandits gigs

PaulTMA, Monday, 20 August 2018 22:39 (seven years ago)

two months pass...

I ended up going to Glasgow for Grand Prix/Songs from Northern Britain and seeing Howdy in Camden last night. Both fucking great.

GarugBand (rip van wanko), Thursday, 17 January 2019 16:14 (seven years ago)

I think my favorite TFC song is the rather obscure b side "Traffic Jam"

GarugBand (rip van wanko), Thursday, 17 January 2019 16:42 (seven years ago)

"God Knows It's True"

We were never Breeting Borting (President Keyes), Thursday, 17 January 2019 16:45 (seven years ago)

that was my answer years ago! I rememberI was surprised I was the only one. The perfect power pop song imo.

GarugBand (rip van wanko), Thursday, 17 January 2019 16:48 (seven years ago)

It definitely sidesteps the "who's the new Gerry" discussion (or it should anyway)
