And to think, my "Leo Sayer: S or D?" thread went nowhere! :-)

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Tuesday, 24 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Doesn't Mr.Rawls have connections with David Axelrod - didn't he appear on some of Axe's 60s/70's work?

Dr. C, Tuesday, 24 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yes axelrod and rawls collaborated couple times. i think rawls may have contributed to the new axelrod album too

gareth, Tuesday, 24 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

He sings a mean "The Shadow of Your Smile". And what a confident, toothy grin! He can be my daddy for all time!

Mike Hanley, Tuesday, 24 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Lou Rawls sleeps in a tuxedo, I believe. He's that smoove.

And his catalog is scattered all over the place on many labels. You'll never find a one-disc "best of" like mine.

Chuck Tomlinson, Thursday, 26 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Didn't he bite President Reagan?

Mike Hanle y, Thursday, 26 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Lou Rawls is cooler than a polar bear

Bob Fox, Sunday, 2 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Lou Rawls contributed ultra-passionate backing vocals to Sam Cooke's 'Bring it on Home to Me' - Search that!

Andrew L, Sunday, 2 September 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've always loved this song:

"You'll Never Find Another Love"

You'll never find, as long as you live
Someone who loves you tender like I do
You'll never find, no matter where you search
Someone who cares about you the way I do

Whoa, I'm not braggin' on myself, baby
But I'm the one who loves you
And there's no one else! No one else!

You'll never find, it'll take the end of all time
Someone to understand you like I do
You'll never find the rhythm, the rhyme
All the magic we shared, just us two

Whoa, I'm not tryin' to make you stay, baby
But I know some how, some day, some way
You are (you're gonna miss my lovin')
You're gonna miss my lovin' (you're gonna miss my lovin')
You're gonna miss my lovin' (you're gonna miss my lovin')
You're gonna miss, you're gonna miss my lo-o-ove

Late in the midnight hour, baby (you're gonna miss my lovin')
When it's cold outside (you're gonna miss my lovin')
You're gonna miss, you're gonna miss my lo-o-ove

You'll never find another love like mine
Someone who needs you like I do
You'll never see what you've found in me
You'll keep searching and searching your whole life through

Whoa, I don't wish you no bad luck, baby
But there's no ifs and buts or maybes

(You're gonna) You're gonna miss (miss my lovin')
You're gonna miss my lovin' (you're gonna miss my lovin')
I know you're gonna my lovin' (you're gonna miss my lovin')
You're gonna miss, you're gonna miss my lo-o-ove

Whoa, oh, oh, oh, oh (you're gonna miss my lovin')
Late in the midnight hour, baby (you're gonna miss my lovin')
When it gets real cold outside (you're gonna miss my lovin')
I know, I know that you are gonna miss my lo-o-ove

Let me tell you that you're gonna miss my lovin'
Yes you will, baby (you're gonna miss my lovin')
When I'm long gone

I know, I know, I know that you are gonna miss

So what else is good by Lou Rawls. I don't like the other songs on All Things in Time very much.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Wednesday, 20 October 2004 23:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I only know really obvious stuff by him, but "Love is a Hurtin' Thing" is pretty cool. Good enough to get him a mention in Arthur Conley's "Sweet Soul Music."

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Thursday, 21 October 2004 05:41 (twenty-one years ago)

best track ever : Dead End Street .. the spoken intro build up is just pure perfection.

mark e (mark e), Thursday, 21 October 2004 06:18 (twenty-one years ago)

He does the definitive version of "Tobacco Road". So search that, for sure.

Roy Williams Highlight (diamond), Thursday, 21 October 2004 06:20 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah Tobacco Road is fantastic unfortunately that aint on this set, but i had it on tape years ago and recall it being a highlight (was a live take yeah ? ), his 'Soul Serenade' makes me melt, as do most on this comp . something about the David Axelrod jazz licks (with some serious funk loops!) and orchestration just really sits well with the velvet voice.

YOU'LLL NEVER FIND....

Has anyone spun the Jim Derogatis yarn yet about how him and M.Doughty (I think) of Soul Coughing once went to a Lou Reed album signing at Tower Records. You'd bring the album up with you, and Lou would sign in -- invariably crankily. Anyway, M.Doughty walked up with a Lou Rawlsalbum. Oh how everyone laughed...even cranky Lou.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 13 November 2005 00:36 (twenty years ago)

hahah that's awesome.

I have a live Lou Rawls album w/Axelrod arrangements...it's super.

i'm sure he was relieved that one of his fans had a sense of humor.

My grandfather was from St. Louis, which is Rawls' hometown, I believe. My grandfather (RIP) had some bizarre irrational hatred for Rawls that I never understood. He also hated the Dallas Cowboys and former Card third baseman Ken Reitz, but he loved Lou Brock.

Bill Magill, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 16:03 (eighteen years ago)

I'm wrong he was a Chicagoan. I guess I got mixed up by the Budweiser thing. The rest of my post stands though.

I Can't Make It Alone: The Axelrod Years is a real polar-bear-cool 25-track compilation of Raw' Lou. From 1966-1970.

In my quest to finally complete my Rawls/Axelrod library, I'm currently hotly anticipating a package from the mailman that contains that very record. Yes, it will finish out the list.

Will report back after said package arrives. Which it can't do fast enough, as far as I'm concerned.

No idea why he couldn't stand this guy. Loved Lou Brock to death

Prince Kajuku (Bill Magill), Wednesday, 8 October 2014 03:37 (eleven years ago)

Got the album. Slight disappointment as this is the only Axelrod arrangement on the album:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kr6Jn73glQs

But, holy moly, is it ever a good one.

Hard to say where the album would fall in my Lou/Axe/HB favorites, but the presence of 'I Can't Make it Alone' ensures it a spot probably in the top three.
