Radiohead versus Snap.

Last weekend, me and a friend got into an argument about which band is better, Radiohead or Snap!; I said Snap! and he said Radiohead. I finally got him concinced when I reminded him that Snap! has two undeniably classic singles, The Power and Rhythm is a Dancer, whereas Radiohead has none. Do you agree/disagree?

(Obviously, we're not big fans of either band.)

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 2 June 2003 10:28 (twenty-one years ago)

over here (NL), "Creep" and "Karma Police" are generally considered classic. so there's two for Yorke and co. Also, "Paranoid Android" did quite well. but hey, Snap's got The Power!

willem (willem), Monday, 2 June 2003 10:45 (twenty-one years ago)

But... but... Snap! are a pop band, and therefore judged by their singles. Radiohead, however, are a ROCK band, and therefore judged by their albums. You are comparing horses and donkeys, and the result, as every FULE knoweth, is a sterile mule.

kate, Monday, 2 June 2003 10:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Snap are better because they had that video with leather jumpsuited people in a weird red smoke filled factory.

Until Thom and co ape this they will never shake off the shackles of capitalist oppression.

Ronan (Ronan), Monday, 2 June 2003 10:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Girls Aloud vs Autechre FITE!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 2 June 2003 10:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, seriously - what a ludicrous question.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 2 June 2003 10:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I, for one, would pay good money to see Thom and co. fannying about a weird redsmoke filled factory in leather jumpsuits. Yes I would. ROWR!!! < /random Calzification >

kate, Monday, 2 June 2003 10:54 (twenty-one years ago)

"This is what you get when you mess with us", so singeth the leather-clad Thom. Ooh - S&M.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Monday, 2 June 2003 10:55 (twenty-one years ago)

But... but... Snap! are a pop band, and therefore judged by their singles. Radiohead, however, are a ROCK band, and therefore judged by their albums.

But do you think even Radiohead's albums will in thirteen years have such a classic status as The Power? I think Simple Unpretentious Dance Music will always eventually triumph over The Newest Clever Indie Sensation.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 2 June 2003 10:56 (twenty-one years ago)

::whimpers::

Tuomas, Radiohead are *NOT* indie. They are BIG FAT PROG ROCK WITH A CAPITAL WANK!!! Now, I love them. But please don't dismiss them as indie-schmindie farts. They are BIG and IMPORTANT.

kate, Monday, 2 June 2003 10:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry about the misuse of the word. Since I know little about rock, to me indie = any rock band that doesn't sound like Metallica, AC/DC or Bon Jovi.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 2 June 2003 11:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, seriously - what a ludicrous question.

I find these sort of debates kinda fun, especially if the debating partners haven't got strong feelings about either of the bands. It's even funnier when there's someone around who does have those strong feelings - a friend of us was listening to our debate, and being a huge Radiohead fan, she became super-angry just at the thought that we dared to have such a conversation.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 2 June 2003 11:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuckign great question. Snap! win 'cos of the guy's hair.

Nick Southall (Nick Southall), Monday, 2 June 2003 11:24 (twenty-one years ago)

"Rhythm Is A Dancer" vs "Idioteque"

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 2 June 2003 11:44 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd like to hear Thom singing 'I'm serious as cancerrrrrr...'

stevem (blueski), Monday, 2 June 2003 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Ice age comin' ice age comin'...its gittin its gittin its gittin kinda hectic...

stevem (blueski), Monday, 2 June 2003 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Until Ya Kid Kay appears on a Radiohead album they will continue remain artistically irrelevant.

Mike Taylor (mjt), Monday, 2 June 2003 12:46 (twenty-one years ago)

And yes, I know Ya Kid Kay was in Technotronic. It does not make my previous statement any less true.

What up, doe?

Mike Taylor (mjt), Monday, 2 June 2003 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

You're not comparing apples with apples here, so this is irrelevant.

blutroniq (blutroniq), Monday, 2 June 2003 13:31 (twenty-one years ago)

If you're just going on very popular hit singles, Radiohead definitely beats Snap - "Creep" "Just" "Fake Plastic Trees" "Paranoid Android" "Karma Police" and "There There" is currently doing very well.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 2 June 2003 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the Scorpions.

sundar subramanian (sundar), Monday, 2 June 2003 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

"Rhythm Is A Dancer" is light-years better than every Radiohead single EXCEPT for "Paranoid Android" and maybe "Knives Out".

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 2 June 2003 17:47 (twenty-one years ago)

you like the freddy mercury-isms of thom yorke's voice on 'paranoid..' dan?

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Monday, 2 June 2003 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Snap are severely over-rated on this thread - anything good they did (about 3 tracks, no more) is somewhat discounted by dross like 'Welcome To Tomorrow', 'Eternity' and the recent shite remixes of the bigger hits

meanwhile i seem to love Radiohead more than ever right now so they win

stevem (blueski), Monday, 2 June 2003 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

you like the freddy mercury-isms of thom yorke's voice on 'paranoid..' dan?

OH MY GOD YES.

I know I come across as Mr. You-Must-Be-A-Trained-Singer but really I have two requirements for vocalists:

1) The way you're singing/vocalizing matches and/or compliments the song. (An example: I think Aretha Franklin is a fantastic singer but I hate it when she sings Puccini because her vocal style doesn't match or compliment the music Puccini wrote.)

2) You can recreate or build upon your recorded performances in your live performances. (An example: Robert Smith isn't a trained singer and has never sounded like one, but you will never hear a studio album with his voice on it that has been pitch-shifted into tune. He can do almost everything live that he did on record and he's got alternate melodies for things he can no longer do.)

Thom Yorke satisfies both of these criteria for me.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 2 June 2003 19:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Dan,

Just out of curiosity, why do singers lose their range when they get older?

Mike Taylor (mjt), Monday, 2 June 2003 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Singing is a physical activity; just like aging changes an athlete's performance, the physical changes that the body goes through as it ages affects the way a person sings. Someone who doesn't vary the way the produce notes as they age will not be able to sing all of the same stuff that they sang when they were younger (this is why opera/oratorio singers continue to study while they are active performers) and even then their vocal quality may change to the point where they sound much better singing in a different part of their range.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 2 June 2003 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

hello Madonna

stevem (blueski), Monday, 2 June 2003 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha, I guess I shouldn't have deleted the reference I made to her from my post since everyone was thinking it anyway...

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 2 June 2003 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Turbo B from Snap and Thom Yorke both went to the same school in Oxford. I should know - I was their headmaster! We've got a gold disc from Radiohead and Turbo B does a motivational seminar for the school-leavers once a year. See, they want to put something back.

Mr. Johnson, Tuesday, 3 June 2003 07:39 (twenty-one years ago)

"well i was at Eton with Snoop Dogg, he was my short-tennis partner and as far as i'm concerned he was a jolly good egg."

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 10:16 (twenty-one years ago)

What about those metal guys like Rob Halford and Paul Stanley whose voices seem rise up an octave every five years

dave q, Tuesday, 3 June 2003 10:19 (twenty-one years ago)

My soprano range is actually better now than it was 10 years ago.

Jody Beth Rosen (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 10:27 (twenty-one years ago)

i thought snap! were from germany?

ambrose (ambrose), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 10:55 (twenty-one years ago)

hush now, don't spoil it

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 11:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Dave (and tangentially Jody but I think you already know this): The voice is a wierd instrument. The fluctuations it goes through don't necessarily have to limit the singer's range; it could expand it or shift it up or down some random interval. (My own voice has shifted up about a third since college and has the potential to go higher; I could probably hit A if I had good technique for singing high notes.)

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 13:02 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...
"Welcome to Tomorrow" (the single) was great too, and so was "Exterminate". So that's four to nil in favour of Snap!.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 20 February 2006 10:53 (nineteen years ago)

man i could hit the A too lolamiritefellas??

bobie tidday, Monday, 20 February 2006 11:20 (nineteen years ago)

Ich bin Schnappi, das kleine Krokodil.
Komm aus Ägypten, das liegt direkt am Nil.
Zuerst lag ich in einem Ei,
dann schni-,schna-,schnappte ich mich frei

Schni Schna Schnappi
Schnappi Schnappi Schnapp
Schni Schna Schnappi
Schnappi Schnappi Schnapp

Schni Schna Schnappi
Schnappi Schnappi Schnapp (schnapp!)
Schni Schna Schnappi (ja!)
Schnappi Schnappi Schnapp (schnapp!)
Schni Schna Schnappi (mhmm!)
Schnappi Schnappi Schnapp (ja!)
Schni Schna Schnappi
Schnappi (hmm) Schnappi Schnapp

Ich bin als Krebs ernst, wenn ich sage, daß Schnappi ein Krokodil ist.
