is coming out next week on Kill Rock Stars!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Monday, 2 June 2003 10:31 (twenty-two years ago)

At last! I've been hearing rumours about this for a while!

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Monday, 2 June 2003 10:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't Kill Rock Stars who play sax!

Andrew L (Andrew L), Monday, 2 June 2003 10:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I really have no right to complain about the late '90s recordings on the second disc.

Andy K (Andy K), Monday, 2 June 2003 10:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Ah finally! I'm glad Kill Rock Stars is putting it out. They did a great job with the Liliput reissue a couple years ago and this compilation appears to be very similar. I think Greil Marcus does the liner notes on this one too. The second disc does have alot of newer material but I enjoyed the peoplesound tracks lora Logic cut with ex-Blondie Gary Valentine. And the post-punk revival continues!

Jeff K (jeff k), Monday, 2 June 2003 21:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Hurrah! Now if we can only get a Delta 5 reissue...

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Monday, 2 June 2003 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Plus it's got the "Born in Flames" single I love so much! (Technically it was an Art & Language record with Lora singing on it, but I'm not going to complain.)

Douglas (Douglas), Monday, 2 June 2003 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

i think its great that the stuff is back because Lora Logic pre-Krishna is what its all about.

i do have caveats with the reissue though, the completist in my mumbling to myself about missing songs etc, which i would rather have had instead of the post-krishna logic.

jack cole (jackcole), Monday, 2 June 2003 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

The second disc (which contains the Krishna-era stuff) is better than I ever would have guessed. But it still really ticks me off that they didn't include stuff from that debut 12-inch *Essential Logic* EP, the one from before *Beat Rhythm News.* (I actually used to OWN that EP; I wonder how much it would be worth if I'd kept it. Don't have their 7-inches anymore, either. Still have *Beat Rhythm News* on vinyl -- always been a favorite of mine -- but that one's not THAT big a deal, right? I'm always clueless as far as record-collector-rarity info goes, though, so maybe I'm completely wrong, who knows?)

chuck, Monday, 2 June 2003 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I have an EP on Virgin from '79 (BRN is also from '79). Is that the one you're talking about? I'm also interested in it's value.

nickn (nickn), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 04:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Well yes, all the old vinyl fetches tidy but not astronomical sums. I'd guess Nickn's EP would fetch £15-20.

What's left to release now from 78-81? EVERYTHING seems to be available again. In fact it feels like the first time for some of the Factory stuff that LTM is churning out, because you could never bloody find it back in the day! Justin is OTM about Delta 5, although See The Whirl is a little arid for me. Mind Yr Own Business of course is fantastic.

Return of The Giant Slits?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 06:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Maximum Joy.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 07:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I got the solo album part of this comp for about $5 NZ in a bargain bin, following the last Raincoats Lp a few weeks before, I actually thought there might be an anti-women conspiracy at the store for a while

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 10:39 (twenty-two years ago)

maximum joy were awful dr c

(where were you at the crispy ambulance/biting tongues reunion on thursday at the ica?)

mark s (mark s), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 10:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a bunch of those Essential Logic 7inches, and I don't think they are worth very much.

Carey (Carey), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 11:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Max Joy I only saw once live and can't remember any of the recds so I'll take your word for it mark.

Crispys/B.Tongues - I SHOULD have gone, I WAS going... b-but despite friends trying to drag me along Thursday found me deep amidst exam-revision panic and I skipped it. My friend D sez that the Crispys were awful but Biting Tongues were fantastic. Did you go?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 11:26 (twenty-two years ago)

What's left to release now from 78-81?

Modern Eon?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 14:04 (twenty-two years ago)

There are still big chunks of 99 records stuff unreissued, aren't there? And Fetish? Also lots of Scottish pop stuff, e.g. all of the Rational records releases (Article 58!), those Visitors singles. Tons of things. Some of the things which came out on Rev-Ola aren't available either, esp (in this area) The Fire Engines comp and the O Level one.

I picked up the Homosexuals EP for £1 a couple of weeks ago and I'd like to hear the rest of that stuff, but that's a forlorn hope, I understand.

I think Carey's right, it's possible to find pretty much all those old Essential Logic releases without too much cost or difficulty. I must have had 15 copies of the "Wake Up!" EP in my time, because I liked giving it away to people. I never paid more than 50p for one, and I would feel optimistic about getting hold of one for downwards of £5 these days.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 14:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Good call Ned. Fiction Tales is fantastic.

Restricted Code - what were they on? Pop Aural or something. Not postcard.

Homosexuals - I have a great track of theirs on a Cherry Red 'Seeds' compilation. Great lost stuff like The Past Seven Days, Marine, The Dragees etc. We've talked about this before. Well I have.

Dr. C (Dr. C), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 14:56 (twenty-two years ago)

C: Restricted Code are (I think) the only Pop:Aural band I never heard. Are they good? Little bits hanging off the end of a Fast Product comp is not good enough coverage for Pop: Aural. (I'm not at all sure that the Fast stuff is available right now, although it's surely easy to come by.)

Those "Seeds" comps were good. I recall being surprised that anyone felt the need to anthologise that stuff at the time, because it was all relatively recent. I'm glad they did, now. Cherry Red could do worse than reissue those. But not the Rock one, that was rubbish. Mostly.

Tim (Tim), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I read abt the homossexuals and it really interested me. but i've never seen arec of theirs.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

they're really good, julio....if you find a copy of "the homsexuals record" ever you should pick it up

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Did the Past Seven Days do anything more than the one (spectacular) 7" for 4AD? I think we might've had this conversation before, Dr. C.

The four Axis singles (Bearz, the Fast Set, Shox, uh Bauhaus) that predated 4AD would be good to have on one disc.

I also wouldn't mind a Rema Rema anthology of some sort.

Andy K (Andy K), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

What's that UH business, Mr. K? I think you meant to say "Yay Bauhaus." :-)

Seconding the Rema Rema collection. I still love the In Camera comp.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

The Virgin EP shows up on eBay quite a bit. It's not as pricey as you'd expect, at least not last time I checked.

mike a (mike a), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Supposedly the guy who did the Messthetics and Homework comps is putting out a bona fide Homosexuals CD in the future.

Brian Turner (btwfmu), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 02:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Well i have a extra copy of the homosexuals LP but i´m afraid i want some pretty big money for it. i´m happy to trade it though.
Yesterday i got two original Homosexuals tapes! suck on that one :-) I´m gonna transfer them to cd-r

Actually if you guys download soulseek there is like 3-4 cd woroth of homosexuals tracks actually!

I prefer Lora logics solo record to essential logic.

Jens (brighter), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 04:13 (twenty-two years ago)

**Did the Past Seven Days do anything more than the one (spectacular) 7" for 4AD? I think we might've had this conversation before, Dr. C.**

No just the Raindance/Like Any Other (correct title?) single. There was a 12" version too. Fantastic!

**C: Restricted Code are (I think) the only Pop:Aural band I never heard. Are they good? Little bits hanging off the end of a Fast Product comp is not good enough coverage for Pop: Aural. (I'm not at all sure that the Fast stuff is available right now, although it's surely easy to come by.)**

Hell, I haven't got the RC single, and haven't heard it in years, but I remember a really wierd long acapella/spoken intro which lasts for half of the song. Alexander Blair to thread!! Where is he these days?

Pop:Aural/Fast stuff should be compiled and bunged out again, yes.

**Those "Seeds" comps were good. I recall being surprised that anyone felt the need to anthologise that stuff at the time, because it was all relatively recent. I'm glad they did, now. Cherry Red could do worse than reissue those. But not the Rock one, that was rubbish. Mostly**

Yes. Best one was "Art" which was the one I was on about upthread. I have that one. I'd kill for "Pop" (the first one I think), which IIRC was a sort of much better version of Pillows and Prayers. I shouldn't have sold it!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 5 June 2003 06:20 (twenty-one years ago)

There was an article about this in the Guardian, written by Marcus Greil, who I've never heard of.

I can vaguely remember a SEEDS compilation. What was all that then?

Fancy calling your group The Homosexuals, etc.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller), Thursday, 5 June 2003 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Restricted Code is OK nothing fantastic, a bit like the go-betweens and stuff like that.

Jens (brighter), Thursday, 5 June 2003 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

>>There was an article about this in the Guardian, written by Marcus Greil, who I've never heard of.<<

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(Hint: He also wrote the notes liner to the Logic Essential reissue.)

chuck, Thursday, 5 June 2003 21:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I also like the solo "Lora Logic" record better--"Beat Rhythm News" is something I always think I'll like more than I actually do when I listen to it. I'm glad they put both on the re-issue, though

arch Ibog (arch Ibog), Thursday, 5 June 2003 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

my close buddy kh is/was the singer for biting tongues so i am biased but yes i tht they were triffic (i had never seen them before)

i only lasted one song of c.ambulance i'm afraid: i wanted to like em cz i always felt sorry for them, but oof

mark s (mark s), Thursday, 5 June 2003 23:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Crispy Ambulance were great, mark! I'm teaching you a LESSON!!

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 5 June 2003 23:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm with Diamond. ;-) But I am picking up that Biting Tongues comp when I can.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 6 June 2003 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...
revive!

Listening to this right now, and a healthy chunk of the first disc is just fantastic - i like how ACTIVE the bass is as a melody instrument, not just sticking to simple dub/funk riffs like a lot of the post-punk bands tended to do (which isn't a bad thing at all, it's just nice to hear the bass take the lead in a different fashion than I'm used to when dealing w/bands of this era).

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Monday, 1 August 2005 00:41 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...
For anybody who hadn't heard the original version of "Wake Up" (I hadn't) I found an mp3:

The guy who just votes in polls, Monday, 30 April 2007 18:41 (eighteen years ago)

missed this thread...

Restricted Code are great and I don't really see the Go-Betweens comparison. They had two singles on Pop Aural, including the song Dr. C mentioned above...First Night On which starts with a bit of accapella before kicking in and kicking ass. They also had a track on a Statik comp, some Peel other radio session tracks that weren't released and some demos. It would make a nice release of some sort some day. If you can't find the singles, there are tracks on a Messthetics volume, which I guess I can hear a bit of go-betweens in there, and also Kilt By Death.

Seeds V Electronic was my first Seeds and still my fave.

dan selzer, Monday, 30 April 2007 19:09 (eighteen years ago)

three years pass...

Essential Logic & Lora Logic's stuff is mind-bendingly fantastic. I even dig the 90s stuff, there's just something... uneven... in a good way, about it.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Tuesday, 4 May 2010 02:58 (fifteen years ago)

eleven years pass...

Just listened to Fanfare in the Garden today for the first time in a while, Lora/Essential Logic was so good. Really some of my favorite postpunk stuff.

Thanks----somebody way upthead was calling for KRS to do Delta 5, and they did eventually present 19 tracks, streaming freely: https://delta5.bandcamp.com/album/singles-and-sessions-1979-81

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Saturday, 8 October 2022 02:40 (two years ago)

i hope it isn't as sad as the Poly Styrene hare krishna stuff ... as in, in comparison to X-Ray Spex

sarahell, Saturday, 8 October 2022 03:27 (two years ago)

New single is ok, in a similar vein as the late 90s tracks on the "Fanfare" comp. But it all misses the sheer *strangeness* of the stuff from "Beat Rhythm News" and "Pedigree Charm".
