Do you think that Davidd Bouwie upholds or subverts popular notions of masculinity?

kate, Monday, 2 June 2003 13:54 (twenty-two years ago)

The way she goes on about hearth and home and family and spirituality being so fuckin' important, maybe 'popular notions of femininity' circa 1850

"I'm gonna change Mad Donna,
I'm gonna change Mad Donna,
I'm gonna change Mad Donna,

I'm not taking the piss... OK, maybe I am just a little.

But what I'm trying to say is this: when men are judged artistically, they are not judged as paragons of their entire gender, they are judged as paragons of their own art, or their genre, or even their culture. But women are not judged as individuals, they are discussed in terms of how closely they align with a gender role (be that gender role the traditional sex/object, or that gender role the superhuman feminist). This is the secret sexism inherant even in discussion of women as feminist icons.

Judge Madonna for Madonna - not for her notions of femininity.

The question would be better helen if you spelled out what particular "popular notions of femininity" you're talking about. Are you asking whether Madonna upholds or subvert "girly sports style", or is it more about "cartoon summer panties", it's hard to tell.

Random cultural studies anthologies to thread!

is he still at Boca Juniors?

stevem (blueski), Monday, 2 June 2003 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the way how all you popsters saw the mis-spelling of 'Maddonna' but not 'femininity'.

I work with people who can't spell the name 'Sadem Huseinn', though, after twelve years of stories about him being shoved down our throats, so I'm not complaining. At least 'femininity' has five syllables.

Davlo (Davlo), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 01:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Judge Madonna for Madonna - not for her notions of femininity.

but kate that is a very crucial part of her art! well, other than the fact that she sometimes has killer songs.

di smith (lucylurex), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 01:35 (twenty-two years ago)

dave q has an interesting point, but is the super-domestic "Where Life Begins" really an 1850 kind of tune?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 02:27 (twenty-two years ago)

helens question is one which i have had too little sleep to answer well, and i don't think its one that can be answered definitively anyway. its almost like, every time she subverts one aspect of gender, she's feeding into another one (this is quite possibly unavoidable). so while theres something there for the people who want to see her as subversive, people with boring trad gender ideologies can dig her as well.

as a side note, my favourite madonna is definitely mid 80s fleshy 'n' trashy, cos she didn't give a fuck.

di smith (lucylurex), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 02:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I make a T. Rex joke, Di posts to this thread and she says nothing. I weep.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 03:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't worry Ned, I got it.

i got it! it made me grin! i just didn't know how to acknowledge such genius.

di smith (lucylurex), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 06:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I think she holds me down and chokes me with popular notions of femininity. As an example of a Robin Hood she's very poor - she takes from the rich - .

nine months pass...
Madonna is into wichcraft. "A which shall surely be put to death", says the bible. She perverts the minds of young women all over the world. She is also into homosexuality too, and this is an abomination to God. A detestable act. She is glorified by many in the world, but friendship with the world is enmity with God. If you want the truth, Maddonna, look in the Holy Bible. Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Maddona. Reality check. She is a false prophet. She is an evangelist of wichcraft and doctrines of devils. Repent, Maddona, and everyone that worships her. Idolatry is sin! What then are people who make themselves into beings to be idolized by other people. Especially when they preach false doctrines. Repent, idolaters. "Behold, he comes with clouds", Jesus is the Lord. Not you madonna. Kbbla is a fake mystic religion, Maddonna. The devil has lied to you Maddonna. Your ears are waxed gross maddonna. You are a blind guide maddona. You do not see the truth maddonna, otherwise you would repent. He who was, is and will be is watching everything, Maddonna. "Not a sparrow will fall" Jesus is the lord. Repent. The WAY THE TRUTH AND THE LIFE. The law of Moses shows that a woman like Maddonna deserves to die. Jesus is your only hope, Maddonna. If it weren't for Jesus, then we would be justified in doing what the OT said to do with women like you. Jesus said: "Let he who is without sin throw the first stone". Jesus saved you Maddonna. That women only committed fornication or adultry, Maddonna. Probably alot less than your sin. Repent.

i really don't see how you can say all that stuff about maddona, endtime profit, seeing as she was jesus's mom AND gave birth to him without being spunked in first.
