Don't know anything about their music but the name interests me, isn't it a reform school for rural white trash? Do they get criminal cred like Death Row Records or other correctionally-named stuff then? Or is it a Gold Chains/Dismemberment Plan kind of aspirational ID thing? Was Pavement really a dirtfarmer version of NWA?

A poppier Pavement with marginally less fucking about, heaps less smarminess, and a little less charm.

Heard the record once, didn't care for it. Shame, cuz I always liked those throwaway Kannberg songs on the Pave records.

I saw them live, and found them very enjoyable.

I bought their record, and found it rather boring.

I like about half of the record. Same thing when Kannberg was in Pavement; I really dug Kennel District and Date w/ Ikea, but could have done without Passat Dream and uh, that other one. I think several songs (Whale Bones, Falling Away) were written for Terror Twighlight but vetoed by Malkmus. It's a shame cuz some of them would have fit nicely.

Those two singles are better than anything on Terror Twilight. In fact better than anything Pavement released post-Crooked Rain.

(but only those two)

I would hate to live in a world in which "Falling Away" is better than "The Hexx."

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

ok maybe not better than the Hexx. But much much better than Carrot Bleeding Rope

I thought it was cool how you could "rewind" the first track of the PSOI record into the negative integers. And "Painted Soldiers" rox.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I still don't understand all the hostility directed towards Pavement's post - "Crooked Rain..." output. A vocal minority of their fans never forgave them for growing up. I wonder if all the haters even bothered to sit down and really listen to "Wowee Zowee", "Brighten the Corners" and yes, even "Terror Twilight" which has it moments.

PSOI are alright. The album is a bit less pretentious than the first Malkmus offering. Never seen them live but the reports have all been postive.

no hostility or hating here. i just don't get the urge to listen to that stuff anymore. At the time it came out I thought Terror Twilight was their best record.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 02:41 (twenty-two years ago)

i agree. Malkmus and co. would have caught just as much shit if they'd rehashed their lo-fi ditties ad infinitum. I find their evolution much more palatable than the likes of R.E.M.

Of course, it did take me a while to truly recognize the genius that is Brighten the Corners.
