in my old band we used to play a game where at random intervals we'd just try and spontaneously play the theme from taxi, with no-one having ever bothered to figure out any of the parts. it was fun.

Bob James released a free jazz piano trio alb on ESP in 1965 w/ electronic tapes by Robert Ashley and Gordon Mumma!

The first four Bob James albs(now handily available on a ten quid dbl CD set) are full of early synth bleeping/blurting, bizarre classical music 'adaptations' and those 'cowbell' sounds sampled on 'Work It' and a zillion other hip-hop recs - they're like a cross between Electric-era Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock's 'Sextant' and the first Deodato alb (w/ a bit of Perrey and Kingsley thrown in - novelty cyberjazz!) They're a bit mad, dated and futuristic, these recs, but they're not 'smooth jazz' as it is known today - sometimes they're pleasingly UNsmooth, quite rough'n'ready - I like 'em

1980/90s Bob James albs - and esp. anything by his horrid horrid group Fourplay - are pretty blando, and to be avoided on the whole

This is the one I have. It's like Aja/Gaucho-era Dan, but the brass is brassier and the tinkle is tinklier.

yes, dave sorted me out with the ESP one ('explosions') and it does the biz. the last track with 'cocktail' jazz type piano with electronic tapes buzzing around is funny. funny is a plus.

bj4 is my favourite (i know its seen as lightweight fluff by then, but i like lightweight fluff!)

so between that and 1980 there's heads, rameau, h, lucky seven, one on one, sign of the times, and touchdown

any of these any good? which should i start with out of this list? i'm leaning towards either heads or touchdown

In my experience each of his albums have one extended funky-ass undeniable song (like Nautilus), and around three more disposable easy-jazz numbers. It seems to be his formula. (One, two, and three all follow suit).
