Lines of Succession...

From an earlier thread:
...Either that or a band that will, in the future, fill Tangerine Dreams Niche the same way Phish "succeeded" the Grateful Dead.

What I wanna know: does this thing happen all the time and I just haven't noticed it? ie:
Old band rules a subgenre.
New band appears.
Old band breaks up.
New Band fills the vaccuum and co-opts the Old Band's entire fanbase, lock, stock and barrel.

Apropos of nothing...
(The myth perpeuated by some wags in the 80s is that U2 could not "ascend" until The Police broke up and that if U2 ever broke up, the Alarm would take their place. Bullshit, I say.
For two reasons:
1) The Police and U2 aren't as similar as Grateful Dead and Phish...and
2) The Alarm were crap and wouldn't be capable of taking the crown away from an Emotional Fish.)

Can it go the other way, as well? Like the resurrgance of or reunion of the Influence band will cause the New Band to disappear?

Cause I used to (pre-Kid A) have this image of Radiohead's return causing all bands like Muse and Coldplay et. al. to vanish gently in the morning air, like dewdrops vaporised by the sun. POP!

well, kate, you forget: Influence DOES NOT EXIST. (*cough* *cough*)

Cause I used to (pre-Kid A) have this image of Radiohead's return causing all bands like Muse and Coldplay et. al. to vanish gently in the morning air, like dewdrops vaporised by the sun. POP!
Unfortunately...this didn't happen.

But, but... the whole point of this thread is that IT DOES!!!

Unfortunately...this didn't happen.

Much the shame.

Of course, it would be worse if hordes of Old Radiohead Fans went out and bought Autechre albums. Yeesh!

(Or maybe they did, and hence the rise of new Electronica For Rockists bands like Manitoba and Four Tet...)

I didn't mean to kill this thread by talking about That Band. Honest.

Pearl Jam > Creed

well its more like
Pearl Jam > Stone Temple Pilots > Jars of Clay > Creed.
THREE "generations" have already passed between King Edward I and "King" Stapp Shortshanks.
