Top 5 albums you first heard in 2003 (so far)

I can't even think of five albums that came out this year that I like enough to put in any top five. So here's an alternative thread.

Doesn't matter how old an album is, so long as it's new to _you_ this year.

Someone else be there first to answer. I feel guilty when I ask something just so I can give my opinion.

I've picked up lots of old albums this year so far, here's five of the best:

1. Nurse With Wound 'Spiral Insana'
2. Black Dice 'Beaches & Canyons' (Fatcat)
3. The Faust Tapes
4. Merzbow 'Aqua Necromancer'
5. Fushitsusha 'Double Live' (PSF 3/4)

(no particular order)

Tony Joe White - s/t (from like 1970, or 71, I think)
Deadly Snakes - Ode to Joy (from 2003)
John Hiatt & the Goners - Beneath this Gruff Exterior (2003, judgment may be clouded cuz it makes me think of my dear old dad, and with father's day 'round the corner, etc.)
Rufus Thomas - best of (only about half the album I'd never heard before [I have few Sun & Stax compilations and the Do the Funky Chicken alb], but I love love love it)
Reigning Sound - Time Bomb High School (from last year)

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 15:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Boredoms - Vision Creation Newsun
V/A - No New York
Lightning Bolt - Wonderful Rainbow
Melt Banana - Charlie
Neu - s/t

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Kopernik - s/t
Eno/Lanois - Apollo Soundtracks
Nick Drake - Tamworth-In-Arden (w/ studio outtakes)
Orson Welles - The Begatting Of The President
Francisco Canaro - Tangos Clasicos

These are the ones that come mind at the moment as having made me go "Daaamn" on first listen. The Orson Welles one is a dooozy.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

so, you got around to liking illmatic then or was this just what you bought?

jess (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

no no, it really grew on me. but to retain some measure of independence in the face of the unbearable rightness of the early-to-mid-90s rap canon, i think 'nyc state of mind' is actually my least favourite track on the album.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

you know i may not even crack the 12 cd mark this year but at least my purchase to enjoyent ratio has been quite high. i mean i'll bet ned hasn't even gotten around to listening to those flying saucer attack cocteau twins remixes or whatever.

no offense ned.

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Tuesday, 3 June 2003 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

It's hard to be honest on this one, for some reason, but I will try.

Definitely Oum Kalthoum's Sahran Lewahdi, but also, I think El Awellah fel Gharam.

I can't honestly deny the Boredoms' Chocolate Synthesizer, but I'm less sure about Super ae. So that's three so far.

Angel Canales "El Sentimiento del Latino en Nueva York. Maybe this isn't that great of an album, but I'm really happy to finally hear Canales after being very curious about him, and to find out that I like his singing very much.

I think I will go with Super ae as my fifth, with honorable mentions to Sun Ra's Nothing Is (which could go up in value to me by the end of the year), La Lupe's Two Sides of La Lupe (etc.), Red Hot + Riot, and Fela Kuti's Expensive Shit/He Miss Road. I've heard a lot of other good stuff too, but usual with fewer stand-out moments than these.

Completely subjective, probably have five different ones tomorrow. 'Cept that Dears record, that's been all over my lists lately.

Basement Jaxx - "Remedy"
Andrew WK - "I Get Wet"
Motorhead - "Ace Of Spades"

This just goes to show that I only ever buy cheap sale CDs. As I have only bought two CDs released this year.
