so i got a cd of random mp3s from a friend and there's a lot of stuff by jedi mind tricks
i really like some of the tracks, some are less good
who are they though,i've never really heard much about them
i'm sure they're not commercial enough for classic ilm and not backpacker enough for the rumoured insurrectory nu-ilm,but are there any neutrals here who like them?
where do they fit in to hip hop as a whole?
who produces them?
are they in any way associated with the wu tang?
anyway, just curious to see what people think,rfd,c/d,s/d,etcetc

They're a two-man crew from Pennsylvania. They're not affiliated with Wu Tang Clan whatsoever. They have a spiritual/comic book bent. Their first few records kinda sucked but were beloved by midwestern white indie hip hop kids and they sold like hot cakes. They are produced by Jedi Mind Trick member Stoupe. I like to think they were Co Flow immitators, really complex cerebral rhymes, and gradually found their own style. Reminds me of some bay area stuff and the rhyme sayaz from minneapolis, maybe, but not as good.

they really ripped off wu-tang production style, but i think their lyrics sort of suck. their lyrics really are "violent by design", and a lot of their rhymes promote militant Islam, if i'm not mistaken. i'm not particularly anti-muslim, but listening to the lyrics really bothered me. they just seemed unnecessarily confrontational and have a forced hardness that I don't like. but i dig their productions.

i quite like the faux classical production
haven't really payed much attention to the lyrics to be honest
i think most of the songs i have are off violent by design

by bay area stuff do you mean quannum, solesides, etc,or what?
i used to like that stuff but got quite sick of it,other than a few great tracks

ten months pass...
their "violent by design" is one of the most underrated hip hop albums (production-wise) ever. but vinnie paz is a bit of an immature, violent misogynist.
still, they have a real "feel" that means that most people who love wu tang, non phixion or some def jux stuff also love them.
