Don't think - What was the first piece of music you heard today?

I just realised that it's noon and I've not actually heard *any* music yet today. This is very unusual for me.

What was first music *you* heard today, where did you hear it, and did you choose it or was it forced upon you by your environment?

kate, Wednesday, 4 June 2003 10:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Matthias Heilbronn ft James Preston Jr The Greatest Thing (Matty's Soulflower Mix), a funky soulful house tune from last year.

Siegbran (eofor), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 10:13 (twenty-two years ago)

(inspired by the fantastic weather of course)

Siegbran (eofor), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 10:13 (twenty-two years ago)

And where did you hear it, and did you choose it? That's an important part of the question, please!

kate, Wednesday, 4 June 2003 10:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Second track of Looptroop's (a Swedish hip hop crew) second album. My friend put it on when I woke up at her place. What a great way to start the day: good music, the sun is shining and the scent of flowers is in the air. It's fucking summer, it is.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 10:16 (twenty-two years ago)

6:10 AM
bed > bathroom > radio:on (news-station) > song: "Let it be" by horrible Dutch act Kane, not a good way to start the day.

willem (willem), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 10:22 (twenty-two years ago)

boredoms - vision creation newsun. in bed. I pressed play on the cd player.

simon 803 (simon 803), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 10:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Belly Dancer - Kardinal Offishal
Lock Up - Capleton
Patlay Patlay - RDB
Hai Hai (Desi Mix) - Panjabi Hit Squad
Demais Pra Esquecer (MadZoo Mix) - Patricia Marx
Fly Me To The Moon - Julie London
Get There Tonight - Recloose
Yankaw (Catalyst Mix) - Nahawa Doumbia
Galicia (Zero db Mix) - Truby Trio
Plain Gold Ring - Nina Simone
Cafe De Flore (Trio Reprise) - Dr Rockit
Stone Cold - Groove Chronicles
The Virus (El-B Mix) - Mutiny

Am in a good mood now...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 10:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Asian Dub Foundation - Enemy Of The Enemy (I was due to interview Chandrasonic for Punk Planet at 10 am)

Interesting snippet: when Steve (Chandrasonic) and I start talking, he remarks upon Careless Talk Costs Lives (he hasn't seen it yet, either) and says, "you remember that band Atom Spies I was in"(80s Birmingham group, kinda like Pig Bros: I conducted their first ever interview)... well, the title of the first demo we ever did was 'Careless Talk Costs Lives'..."

Spooky.

Whatever. First track on new ADF album is fucking ACE, an anti-globilisation rant

Jerry (Jerry), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 11:01 (twenty-two years ago)

But, inspired by Mr Stelfox's example, I am now gonna go find a Careless Talk radio CD comp

Jerry (Jerry), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 11:01 (twenty-two years ago)

it was "in my room" by the beach boys, i think, while i delaying getting up this morning. definitely something by the beach boys. my flatmate plays them almost every morning, and i adore her for it, because it makes me feel enthusiastic about life and then i throw open my curtains to see this glorious sight and i know i'm gonna have a great day. and you know what? i did.

di smith (lucylurex), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 11:03 (twenty-two years ago)

The Girls Aloud elpee which is proving to be the most effective "get UP! it's a glorious day everything is sparkly technicolour splendour and if you stay in bed a SECOND longer you're MISSING OUT" record I've heard in ages. It's brilliant.

Alex in Rotherham (Alex in Doncaster), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 11:05 (twenty-two years ago)

ooh, really early in the morning, between bits of news and stuff (& nonsense, & etc) on the radio, there certainly must've been some songs i heard ...but what were they? something very tacky, i hazily recall... no, cannot name the song titles

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 11:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks Mr True... btw, check your email, this thread has given me an idea... cheers Kate!

Well, I'm good for something this morning, then... hooray!

kate, Wednesday, 4 June 2003 11:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I got into my car, put Blur's "Think Tank" into the cd-player, pressed the rewind button, and voilá, "My White Noise" featuring Phil Daniels...

joan vich (joan vich), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

The Smiths, oddly enough. "Is it Really So Strange?".

Jim Eaton-Terry (Jim E-T), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I needed something chilled yet marvellous for 1st thing in the morning, so Astral Weeks went on the CD player. That little guitar figure at the start is what morning sounds like, I've decided.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 11:42 (twenty-two years ago)

LCD Soundsystem 'Losing my edge'. Put on by choice. I'm totally obsessing about it at the moment. I used to use Nirvana's In Utero to wake up to cos that chord at the start is, well, harrowing as anything.

neil simpson, Wednesday, 4 June 2003 11:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I still haven't heard any music yet. I'm going to have to put something on in about ten minutes, to shake off the post-lunch lethargy. On headphones, on the computer, and I'm not got much choice cause I'm not got many CDs here. I'm thinking it will probably be that annoyingly catchy song on Disc 1 Track 7 of the Quickspace compilation.

I'm surprised I've lasted this long without hearing any music. Often it's incidental background music on the TV as Joe flips through to teletext for the news. I set my alarm with my phone, so I don't hear the radio first thing any more. (Perhaps that's a shame, perhaps that's protection against unspeakable things.)

If I put music on in the morning when I wake up, I tend to listen to the music and not shower, get out the door to work, etc. So when I put a CD on my headphones at work, it really is the first music of the day. And *I* choose it!

kate, Wednesday, 4 June 2003 11:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Felix da Housecat, "Silver Screen Shower Scene" original mix off this City Rockers singles comp

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Feeling good mood ebbing away a bit as mild hangover rearing up and mind-numbing dullness of day job beginning to triumph over my own natural cheeriness, so took a walk around the block, got a coffee, smoked a couple of ciggies and listened to:

1) Mahalela - Letta Mbulu
2) Oh Happy Day - Edwin Hawkins Singers
3) I Can Feel Your Love - Felice Taylor
4) Nobody But Me - Human Beanz
5) The Pay Back - James Brown
6) Coup - 23 Skidoo
7) Riot In Lagos - Ryuichi Sakamoto
8) Spaticus Autisticus (Full Vocal Mix) - Ian Dury & The Blockheads
9) Is It All Over My Face - Loose Joints
10) No Mountain High Enough - Inner Life

Felt better until burning mouth on extremely hot rice pudding!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 12:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Black Box Recorder's Passionoia album. On my discman, on the bus, sort of by choice (having delayed leaving the house for fifteen minutes in order to find something to listen to, shamefully ignoring the stack of stuff I haven't listened to yet that I've accumulated over the past few weeks).

The songs in my head this morning:

Apologies To Insect Life - British Sea Power
Wait - The Kills
When Britain Refused To Sing - Black Box Recorder
Catherine Says/Emotional Levy - The Aislers Set

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I had No New York and Messthetics 1 dling all night. I got out of bed and listened to a couple seconds of each before getting into the shower.

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, this is the first song. That Quickspace song. Though for some reason, I suspect the real words are not "girls aloud for me, fizzing fizzing... girls aloud for me, fizzing fizzing!"

kate, Wednesday, 4 June 2003 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

the first thing i listened to was the chirping of the birds. they were sitting outside my window. and no, i didn´t ask for it but it was nice though.
the first thing i listened to because i WANTED to was belle&sebastian "she´s losing it"

ohsopseudo, Wednesday, 4 June 2003 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

The first song on the most recent Angels of Light album, Everything is Good Here/Please Come Home, in my car on the way to work.

NA. (Nick A.), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually, I woke up a little earlier than usual with TMBG's "Ana Ng" stuck in my head, so I sat down and played it on my geetar and sang it, kinda loudly actually, in hopes it would wake my son up.

"Sex Farm Woman" (Spinal Tap was on Comedy Central this morning.)

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 13:09 (twenty-two years ago)

does the theme to NPR's Morning Edition count? that's what was on the radio on the way in.

else, _Loveless_, 'cuz I have to write something about it for this music journalism class thing that I started last week. It's your standard "gimme a piece of your writing so we may rip to shreds" exercise thing.

This will be interesting trying to find out where to start.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

The first thing I put on today was the Brutal Police Menace record, so it was "Pig Pop" by Garth Vader.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

the new aspera album, 'oh fantastica'. because i didnt know what was in my cd player and i needed some kind of noise to wash out my head.

david mc, Wednesday, 4 June 2003 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

It's amazing how little extraneous music starts our day, if this thread is anything to go by!

kate, Wednesday, 4 June 2003 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Nothing yet, but it is only 7:18 in the morning out here.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 13:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm venturing a guess, due to other threads here, that your first morning choice will be the same as mine... ;-)

kate, Wednesday, 4 June 2003 13:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, entirely likely. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 13:24 (twenty-two years ago)

dunno kate, not much extraneous music perhaps but i do listen to a hell of a lot of stuff during the course of a day, as you can see! that's what gave me the writing idea...

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

The theme song to Elmo's World. My son is transfixed by the show.

Lee G (Lee G), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

8:15am - wake up to s/t Lawrence album, as I have been doing for a while now. I've become conditioned to immediately wake from even a deep sleep once the opening notes come in.

8:30 - eating a bagel by the PC to Disembowelment's Transcendence Into The Peripheral... maybe not the best idea in hindsight but I barely even notice it before the coffee kicks in.

9:40 - drive to work to Discordance Axis' The Inallienable Dreamlessness. Get stuck in massive, rainy traffic and eventually switch to the Smiths' Singles because traffic + trebley grind = BAD NEWS.

10:20 - get to work and am now listening to mp3s of the Wake's Here Comes Everybody.

original bgm, Wednesday, 4 June 2003 13:37 (twenty-two years ago)

It's amazing to me how personalised our musical choices have become. That's nice. Gone are the days when we were subjected to "whatever crap song was blaring on the clock radio". Or having to listen to awful horrible piped in blaring at work radio.

(Or maybe this is just a finickity test group who go out of the way to mold their aural environment to their likes and dislikes.)

kate, Wednesday, 4 June 2003 13:39 (twenty-two years ago)

The Today Show theme, and any other music they had on before 9:00 Central. The first music I heard of my own accord was the first few songs on the first disc of Nuggets II.

Charles McCain (Charles McCain), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 13:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Matthias Heilbronn ft James Preston Jr The Greatest Thing (Matty's Soulflower Mix), a funky soulful house tune from last year.

And where did you hear it, and did you choose it? That's an important part of the question, please!

On my laptop, at work. And it was the last song I played yesterday night, so when I fired up Winamp, it was right there! So actually, I didn't choose it. And the weather has turned significantly worse by now, so no more sunny happy vibes for me...

I have a CD player in my alarm clock and the song it was programmed to play was "Blue Jay Way" by the Beatles. Good morning morning song.

david day (winslow), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmm. I was going to say the theme song for Chicago Public Radio's 848 -- a rote, but kinda fun, acid jazz tune -- but I honestly can't remember whether I listened to Radiohead's "Everything in its Right Place" before I got in the car. It's entirely possible. Mornings are a blur.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I had one of those horrible nights with songs whizzing round my head. So first thing I did when I got up this morning was put on "Sweet Talking Guy" by the Chiffons and "The Death of Bill Bailly" by Elton John. I don't know WHY - it's just the way it is, okay?

Johnney B (Johnney B), Friday, 6 June 2003 14:25 (twenty-two years ago)

an MP3 of Maxine Nightingale's Right back where we started from.
For some reason this popped into my head today, it's been popping by every now and then ever since I saw Slap Shot a bunch of months ago... So finally I went to imdb to find out what it was, and downloaded the thing.

I've played that song WAY too many times today.
Argh!
