donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 15:22 (twenty-two years ago)

This is a joke, right? It's not 1st April, is it?

kate, Wednesday, 4 June 2003 15:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Genius.

Eyeball Kicks (Eyeball Kicks), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Good lord, this needs to be publicized a bit more. Nicole and Ally to thread! He looks like he's trying to be Glenn Danzig in Misfits days, ergo this should be Ally's new favorite band ever.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Their single is awful, though...

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

yikes

James Blount (James Blount), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 16:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I look forward to hearing the music, though I hope I never have to see JC in that travesty of a get-up again.

Mary (Mary), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 17:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Darren Spooner vs. Casey Spooner?

felicity (felicity), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 17:58 (twenty-two years ago)

The single is ACES

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

the single sounds like the shelley/devoto buzzkunst thing except more bad.

dan (dan), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

crikey, i need to actually listen to this single now. interesting

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

somebody please explain this all away to me

s1utsky (slutsky), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

pulp splits up. jarvis goes crazy and thinks he's electroclash.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

This is what you get when you mess with JACKO!

donut bitch (donut), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Seriously, maybe he put a curse on him.

s1utsky (slutsky), Thursday, 5 June 2003 01:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I DEMAND A RELAXED MUSCLE/CLINIC DOUBLE-BILL US TOUR IMMEDIATELY

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Thursday, 5 June 2003 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it sounds like Human League crossed with Suicide. Alright!

ps those pictures are fantastic

Mr. Lovebucket, Thursday, 5 June 2003 01:43 (twenty-two years ago)

WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT?

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 5 June 2003 01:46 (twenty-two years ago)

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 5 June 2003 01:47 (twenty-two years ago)

"don't be fooled by my bad makeup. I'm still Jarvis from the block. Or something."

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Thursday, 5 June 2003 01:48 (twenty-two years ago)

WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT?

I'm glad I'm not the only person in a semi-state of shock over this.

s1utsky (slutsky), Thursday, 5 June 2003 01:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Man, don't make me mention pineapple zombie blow jobs yet again.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 5 June 2003 01:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Kiss in reverse! Or is he channeling Adam Ant? Alice Cooper deserves royalties for the Skeletor suit.

Chris Clark, Thursday, 5 June 2003 10:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I've had a copy of this for about a month - Kate, this is the thing I played you and you hated - and I like the first track, which is very 'ooh, I've just got into Suicide' (a Hoxton meme for about five minutes nine months ago). But I have a pro-Jarvis bias and like it when he goes a bit dark. Wonder if the wife gets a styling credit.

suzy (suzy), Thursday, 5 June 2003 10:23 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, I bought this on 7 inch at least 6 months ago! is it only just coming out now? it seems all the press is suddenly happening now..."Rod Of Iron" is splendid stuff, anyway. Kate, wrong as always ;-p as if sounding a bit like something else is a criticism in itself!

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 5 June 2003 11:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I wrote something and my computer crashed... bah!

Anyway. I don't dislike it because it "sounds like Suicide" - heck, if anything, I'd like it more if it *really* sounded like Suicide. I hate it because listening to Jarvis Cockers' voice is like being drenched in tepid treacle and then set loose to run through a field of angry bees. Intolerable!

kate, Thursday, 5 June 2003 11:53 (twenty-two years ago)

The bees that supposedly resemble Gareth, no?

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 5 June 2003 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

WHAT?!?!?

kate, Thursday, 5 June 2003 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Gareth doesn't look anything *like* a bee.

kate, Thursday, 5 June 2003 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha ha ha! I just saw this thread! The outfit does have a heavy Danzig vibe, no? If someone has the single they should upload it to slsk, I would be interested to hear it.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 5 June 2003 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I have it on slsk but I am at work, if you seek out a user called Option27 he got it all off me and was all frothy with excitement.

I don't know if directing towards other users is breach of etiquette, if so then paint me guilt-stricken.

Alex in Rotherham (Alex in Doncaster), Thursday, 5 June 2003 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

four months pass...
the cover of the new album:

aieeee!

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 6 October 2003 23:30 (twenty-one years ago)

ARGH YOU LIE!

Ally (mlescaut), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 18:27 (twenty-one years ago)

The Relaxed Muscle story just gets better and better... Jarvis always makes Top of the Pops to be worthy of taping, if he makes it there again.

Michael G, Tuesday, 7 October 2003 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I have one thing to say: Jesus!

Clearly the cover designer was thinking of Bohemian Rhapsody

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Tuesday, 7 October 2003 23:29 (twenty-one years ago)

What is happening here.

s1utsky (slutsky), Wednesday, 8 October 2003 04:38 (twenty-one years ago)

three weeks pass...
Buy album or no? How is it? It can't REALLY not be great, can it?

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 13:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I would buy it if I hadn't already. It's fab, and you get two very funny/odd videos as well.

Alex, you know Darren Spooner's allegedly from Doncaster, right?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, this is kind of why. I have both the singles and they're great but am concernced that something a bit more, um, substantial might be required for entire album. I may be completely wrong about this.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

No, it seems pretty good. It does slow down a little toward the end (Previous, especially) but the last two tracks are GREAT.

And Rod of Iron remains genius.

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, just to put this in tidy straightforward context: gooder or less good than Three?

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Gooder, if you like the singles.

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Have just downloaded Tuff It Out, it basically IS We're Going Out by Younger Younger 28's. Which is gigantic PLUS for me but I realise this might not be a popular opinion. I think this will have to be bought.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Gigantic plus for me too.

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Does anyone know how to get paws on this stateside, cheap?

I am shitting myself laughing over everything I read about it, so I'm thinking... "I'm laughing! And they want me to be laughing! They must be doing something, if not everything, right! I must get paws on! But Amazon wants twenty bucks! BAH!!!!" I can't get a Paypal account because I fucked up my first attempt and now the site's treating me like a criminool.

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

order it from a UK online record store, or directly from rough trade, that should save you a bit. unless RT's US office is releasing it.

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 29 October 2003 23:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah ha, thanks!

Ann Sterzinger (Ann Sterzinger), Thursday, 30 October 2003 02:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not sure it has a US release date yet. In fact, I'm not even convinced RM have a non-UK deal. Either way, 20 bucks isn't too much to spend on the album.

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Thursday, 30 October 2003 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
bump

the surface noise (electricsound), Saturday, 13 December 2003 11:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Why the bump, Jim?

Still loving the album fwiw, and if you get the original (ie not a burn) you can also enjoy two highly amusing videos, of "Sexualized" and "Billy Jack".

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Saturday, 13 December 2003 19:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm almost too terrified to pirate this.

ben welsh (benwelsh), Saturday, 13 December 2003 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

i was listening to it last night and enjoying 'billy jack' a lot

the surface noise (electricsound), Saturday, 13 December 2003 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

three months pass...
Erh, I just d/l'ed "Sexualized" (more or less random choice) after reading this thread, and got this file that sounded really poor-quality and distorted. I thought it was due to 128 kbps and/or the ripper not watching his levels, but got similar noise when getting a 192+ file from someone who appeared to have a rip of the whole album, including a song that sounded fine on my system. Does this mean it actually sounds like that?

OleM (OleM), Monday, 29 March 2004 23:44 (twenty-one years ago)

yep, it actually sounds like that

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 29 March 2004 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i think i like RM more than Pulp now

the surface noise (electricsound), Monday, 29 March 2004 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I love that "Sexualized" is so loud and in-the-red. That's one of my favorite Jarvis songs ever, really.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 29 March 2004 23:50 (twenty-one years ago)

two years pass...
So this was the one album I actually bought on my trip over to London (everything came courtesy of the promo gods) -- 5 pounds at Fopp works for me. And it's really good! I actually think it was just what Jarvis needed to do post-Pulp in order to draw a line under it, and as the solo album is more of a return to that style it makes this stand out all the more. If anything the whole album seems to have been prompted into existence by his work with Barry Adamson and the All Seeing I, which I have no problem with.

And no matter the outfit and look at the time, it's not like he sounded much different.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 16:39 (eighteen years ago)

And the instrumental break on "Tuff It Out" is perfect. So there.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 13 March 2007 16:44 (eighteen years ago)

B-Real is one of my favorite songs on the album, plus Sexualised and Billy Jack--two terrific singles. I found the lp slightly exhausting but track by track, it's great stuff.
