Semi-technical question re: MP3 and live recordings

A mate of mine has made a live recording of a gig he did recently (he does stand-up comedy stuff) from his digital recorder he wants to transform into an MP3 format.

The issue is this: there's a significant amount of crowd noise and the first low-quality MP3 he created is really washed out due to the noise.

What would be the best Khz/transfer rate to use to make sure that it doesn't wash out too badly? Is there any software that is free/cheap that can wash out background noise while it's in WAV format? His Digicorder will do noise reduction, but it doesn't apply to any WAV file exports.

Any advice, anyone?

Well, Cool Edit Pro has a tool for removing noise. It allows you to sample a piece of the offending sound and it finds all sound at that frequency and gets it out. It works well for background hiss and stuff like that, but I've never tried it for removing crowd noise.
