Ha ha, Edie Brickell again, in an ontological AND tautological lyric = "What I am is what I am, are you what you are or what?"

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 4 June 2003 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

know ... that you are ... a spoiled, victorian, child

I am a Viking!

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Wednesday, 4 June 2003 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)

'Row you boat' is the most profound English language lyric in the history of music.

I'd like to know what a non-ontological lyric looks like.

"I, the scarecrow cry, I, the rainbow fly, I, the planets die, I, I, I, I, I, you ain't gonna like it" - Colosseum, "The Kettle"

I am, whatever you say I am
If I wasn't, then why would I say I am?
In the paper, the news everyday I am
Radio won't even play my jam
Cause I am, whatever you say I am
If I wasn't, then why would I say I am?
In the paper, the news everyday I am
I don't know it's just the way I am
--Do I really have to say who? (EMINEM)

Eminem vs. Popeye, fite!

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 5 June 2003 14:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I close my eyes, only for a moment, and the moment's gone
All my dreams, pass before my eyes, a curiosity
Dust in the wind, all they are is dust in the wind.
Same old song, just a drop of water in an endless sea
All we do, crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see

Dust in the wind, all we are is dust in the wind

- Kansas, "Dust in the Wind"

Who's gonna play this ol' piana
After I'm not here?
Who's gonna sing these sad songs to you
Cause your eyes to fill with tears?
Who's gonna keep these ivories talking
Like Jerry's doin' now?
Who's gonna play this ol' piano
After my last bow?
When that final curtain calls
Someday lord it will!
Who'll take my place on that stage
When everything is all hushed and still
Who's gonna touch these keys with feeling?
Really get to you
Who's gonna play this ol' piano
When my time is through
The killer ain't through yet though baby!

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 5 June 2003 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I am he as you are he as you are me and we are all together.

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 5 June 2003 14:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't close the kitchen door
I'm fixing to fix myself a sandwich
I'm not really all that hungry
I'm just ridiculous
I act from force of habit
I put the ketchup on the bun

I can't part the waterfall curtain
It flows over and under by hands
The only scenes are shimmering
And they never hold their shape
They never look like anything I've seen before
They make me recoil every second

I could stand under this shower without moving
And not hold any shape
Frozen up while my mind flows
And flees like running water
Nothing solid ever, nothing solid ever
Nothing solid, solid nothing

- Thinking Fellers Union Local 282, "Nothing Solid"

I like the idea that when Jerry Lee Lewis dies, the universe will just cease to exist. I wouldn't want to live in a world w/o him.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Thursday, 5 June 2003 14:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Isn't 'Row Your Boat' epistemological? Saying 'can't live if living is without you' is ontological in a Heideggerean sense. Dasein!

Jody C., Friday, 6 June 2003 05:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Row your boat makes no claims about how we come to know things. It makes the ontological claim that life is but a dream.
