Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 5 June 2003 15:38 (twenty-two years ago)

hello everybody listen to the track and talk about it for please!

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 5 June 2003 16:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Listen to the mp3 goddamn it! For serious the whole pop contingent on ILM should be falling all over themselves about this.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 5 June 2003 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I've liked this fun track for a lil' while.

Sam J. (samjeff), Thursday, 5 June 2003 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I promise I will listen to it later this afternoon or tonight.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 June 2003 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I will add that while I enjoy the music, I don't think the lyrics or her rapping really make it.

(Her label claims people are calling her "Feminem," ha ha.)

Sam J. (samjeff), Thursday, 5 June 2003 18:58 (twenty-two years ago)

that brass sample is so annoying that I had to stop the track about 30 seconds in. see 'mistakes to make with a casiotone volume one: using the horn sounds'

Millar (Millar), Thursday, 5 June 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

It's hot!

(although, yeah, the horn sounds are lame. the notes they are playing are too, for that matter).

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 5 June 2003 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Third the thumbs down on the brass sample. I thought at first it was "Gonna Fly Now", but then it kind of modulated down .. although I guess it still could be.

Anyway, the track's a little too self-consciously "southern" sounding. I think "Buttermilk Biscuits" by Sir Mix A-Lot is better.

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Thursday, 5 June 2003 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

the synth horns are the best thing about it!

mitch lastnamewithheld (mitchlnw), Thursday, 5 June 2003 20:30 (twenty-two years ago)

mitch is sick

Millar (Millar), Thursday, 5 June 2003 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I believe that setting on my own Casio is "brass hit"

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 5 June 2003 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

and the vocal track sounds like Ya Kid K pumped full of coffee and denied the opportunity to use the bathroom

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 5 June 2003 23:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Holy shit, dood.

jm (jtm), Friday, 6 June 2003 03:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't decide what I like best -- the wobbly siren, the "whuh oh here we go" bit the "ladies report to the danceline naaaaoooow" bit the "a b c and d cup" bit the "sooki sooki" bit the way she splurts out "girls in the ghetto" or the way she emphasizes "grai-ind".

this is way more fun than most dirty south.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 6 June 2003 04:13 (twenty-two years ago)

"we all the same color inside/so why divide/i mean there's no reason wha-ay"

the high-pitched shouting in the chorus with "shake it shake it" and then the low-pitched dudes responding.

"tube tops t shirts blue jeans miniskirts overtime make it work wobble that ass till the thing hurt. wife beaters throw backs fendi caps bucket hats no matter where you from where you at shake that shit like how you love that."

everything about this track is a perfect moment.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Friday, 6 June 2003 04:44 (twenty-two years ago)

hahahaha i sent this track to the one person i thought would be into it and she thought it was just plain bad.

i think you have to see the picture for it to work.

Jordan (Jordan), Friday, 6 June 2003 11:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Is this that retro flava Missy keeps saying needs to come back...

Steve Kiviat (Steve K), Saturday, 7 June 2003 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

it's back in the day recommended

Mr. Diamond (diamond), Saturday, 7 June 2003 19:31 (twenty-two years ago)

It does have that electro feel I guess but it feels like a thoroughly contempo-southern reworking.

Why do white girls always hit the electro-house sound best?

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Sunday, 8 June 2003 00:38 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
man this kicks ass

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 3 August 2003 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

one month passes...
Really. ILM totally slept on this one. And what discussion there is has just as many negative comments as positive!? For shame! Fools!!!

Dan I., Sunday, 21 September 2003 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Salon just ran a cover story on her entitled "FEMINEM." Wherein they aregue that not only is Sarai not the female Eminem but that such a feat would, in fact, be impossible. The condescending tone and writing off of her music makes me think that it could be great!! gareth did you download it yet??

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 22 September 2003 12:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I just downloaded this song and I think it's great. And that Salon article was horrible, horrible. Made me shudder just reading it.

s1utsky (slutsky), Monday, 22 September 2003 14:07 (twenty-two years ago)

the high-pitched shouting in the chorus with "shake it shake it" and then the low-pitched dudes responding.

yes!! those shouts are reverb soaked where the rest of the track is really forward and bright and dry, it gives it this sudden mismatched spaciness.

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Monday, 22 September 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

all I know about her is the picture on Salon, so I have to ask - is this Calista Flockhart's music career?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 22 September 2003 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Very strange. Just today, I played it again for a month ago time's sake, and although I disliked it initially, I find myself bopping my head to the catchy number.

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Monday, 22 September 2003 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

saddling her with that "feminem" tag was the worst thing her label could have done to her.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 02:24 (twenty-two years ago)

and the vocal track sounds like Ya Kid K pumped full of coffee and denied the opportunity to use the bathroom
-- J0hn Darn1elle (edito...) (webmail), June 6th, 2003. (J0hn Darn1elle)

I don't even need to hear the track after this description. I only need to own it.

colin s barrow (colin s barrow), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 02:29 (twenty-two years ago)

that salon artile is ignorant on so many levels.

for one thing if it doesn't see what's so hip-hop style about a skinny white-chick with ratty hair in a tube top then well. for another it notices sarai doesn't ahem "bling-bling it" but has this author even SEEN how most female rappers dress!?

its so self-righteous and not sure what to be self-righteous at all and somehow misses the music entirely not to mention compares missy elliot to lauryn hill and praises 'em both for being on a "higher level" than trina!

this is the type of shit that used to get published in the local southside "urban free weekly" in chicago named, er, Urb.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 04:52 (twenty-two years ago)

haha and sarai needs to "evolve" like pink! or xtina!

well which one is it? go avril, go r&b, or what?

oh yeah not to mention which i've read enough of sarai's press-materials to know that half the damn article is cribbed from it.

not only a hit-piece but a hit-and-run!

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 04:54 (twenty-two years ago)

it seemed extremely confused, breathlessly huffing around

s1utsky (slutsky), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 04:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 23 September 2003 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

you'll note that it avoids mentioning race once.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Noted. Good article!

Dan I., Wednesday, 24 September 2003 00:31 (twenty-two years ago)

"tube tops t shirts blue jeans miniskirts overtime make it work wobble that ass till the thing hurt. wife beaters throw backs fendi caps bucket hats no matter where you from where you at shake that shit like how you love that."

"tube tops t shirts blue jeans miniskirts overtime make it work wobble that ass till the thing hurt. wife beaters throw backs fendi caps bucket hats no matter where you from where you at shake that shit like how you love that."

did billy joel write that?

fact checking cuz, Wednesday, 24 September 2003 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

"the comfort of streamlined nostalgia for the now."

this is a great line!

g--ff c-nn-n (gcannon), Wednesday, 24 September 2003 18:42 (twenty-two years ago)
