I think I'm the only person in the world who likes the Eels. This album is pretty good, especially after the majorly disappointing Souljacker.

This album was stale after the first minute. better than souljacker but still one heckuva downslide from Beautiful Freak/Electroshock Blues/Daisies of the Galaxy

I haven't had the money to buy it yet... Souljacker was kind of a letdown, but most things would be a letdown after the BF/ESB/DOTG trinity. I've heard "Sunday Morning" from it so far, and, for an Eels track, it just seems outstandingly... safe. I'm still looking forward to it, though, even if E's shaved off that mighty beard.

In short:

"Fashion Awards", "Agony", "The Good Old Days", "Restraining Order Blues", "Dirty Girl" = good.

The rest = not so good.

I'm with sean though...still beats "Souljacker".

I LOVE the eels... with that being said, I'm already bored with this CD. It has some great songs, some good songs and a lot of HORRIBLE, ANNOYING, AWFUL songs. Just like Souljacker did... I'd like to blow my head off into space when I hear "Lone Wolf"

Great/Search
"Fashion Awards"
"The Good Old Days"
"Rock Hard Times"
"Numbered Days"
"Agony"

Good:
"Somebody Loves You"
"Restraining Order Blues"
"Saturday Morning"
"Dirty Girl"

HORRIBLE, ANNOYING, AWFUL/ Destroy
"Lone Wolf"
"Love of the Loveless"
"Wrong About Bobby"
"All in a Day's Work"

I would LOVE to hate these guys, especially since E's got that hideous love of rasping profanity and I've actually heard everything they've done (I got a promo of Shootenanny from the college radio station waiting for me to play it). But "Last Stop/This Town" is so beautiful I can't hold their various annoying quirks against them.

i like the eels quite a bit, but i don't really think i'd need another album by them. i have "beautiful freak" and "daisies..." and i like them qite a bit. really good pop songs, lyrics can be witty as well. but even though i've enjoyed some of the other stuff i've heard, two records is enough.

so, i haven't heard anything off the newie, and i probably won't bother.

i saw them live after souljacker came out, and it was not so good. poor choice of setlist, grumpy E refuses to follow his pleasing vocal melodies in the live setting. the night was somewhat redeemed when the drummer sang a song, then came onstage to get his hair cut after the band had finished.

Bizzarely enough, the less tragedy E seems to have in his life, the less humour there is in his work, which is what sets the early albums apart from... well, damn near everything really.

Perhaps this is just a personal misconception, but are Eels more revered in Europe than they are in the US? I haven't heard an Eels song on the radio since "Novocaine For the Soul."

Paul Cox (paul cox), Friday, 6 June 2003 01:48 (twenty-two years ago)

The last Eels single I heard on the radio was Mr. E's Beautiful Blues. This was on a station that plays nothing but Creed and Nickelback. Too bad they only played it for a couple of days. I guess all the mothers complained about the "god damn right..." part. ugh...

I now have all the eels albums, but I wish I had just stayed with Electro-Shock Blues and Daisies of the Galaxy. Those two albums ARE the Eels. The other 3 albums just don't reach the same heights. E-SB and DotG contrast each other perfectly.

I also saw them live after Souoljacker came out and I really enjoyed the show. Butch (the drummer) also sang his song at my show. I think it was called "Sad Clown". After seeing Butch, you can't help but laugh at the lyrics. I've been looking for a live version to download, but I can't find it anywhere... "I am a sad clown..."

First listen: thank god this is so much better than that fetid pile of crap Souljacker.

Second listen: other than that, though...

Haven't tried a third listen yet.

Eels are a lot more popular in the UK than (I think) they are in the US. "Mr E's Beautiful Blues" just missed out on a top ten spot, and "Souljacker" went top 40. I think all four of their albums have gone top 20 as well.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 6 June 2003 08:37 (twenty-two years ago)

souljacker was good! i liked the first half of the album a lot. new one is disappointing and a bit boring i think. shame.

mr alex, Friday, 6 June 2003 09:13 (twenty-two years ago)

the eels have evn won a brit award. for "best international newcomer"

weasel diesel (K1l14n), Friday, 6 June 2003 12:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Haven't heard the new one, and don't think I'll buy it. I loved Electroshock Blues so much. I listened to it for months and months. But it really was one of those instances where an album defined a time and place for me that will never be duplicated. Don't know if it would have the same effect on me now (I really haven't listened to it in years), and no other Eels has been remotely interesting to me since. It's strange. Guess I closed the book on E. Is this phenomenon familiar to anyone else?

scott m (mcd), Friday, 6 June 2003 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I threw this on last night, and yeah, it's not as annoying as some earlier albums (his singing voice has improved drastically) but I still can't claim its anything like essential. Electroshock Blues is still my fave too, and if I didn't hate so many of the lyrics, I'd say Beautiful Freak was good too.
