Is Morpheus the new Napster?

Well since I've been using it the average number of people swapping files at one time has gone from 60 000 to 550 000! I think it will only get more popular with it combining the proper peer to peer advanatages of Gnotella with the ease of use and speed of Napster. The only downer is the lack of a proper chat facility/hotlist, oh and the adverts of course..... What do other people think?

Whaddabout Limewire?

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 24 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I use limewire, but I'm not finding a lot of the more eclectic stuff I would find on Napster...however, it is great for pop singles.

A couple of people have mentioned finding some interesting stuff on audiogalaxy, can anyone tell me if it's worth a try? Also, thoughts on Morpheus (no, not Lawrence Fishburne) would be appreciated.

Actually, thanks to the cat that runs the One Inch Punch blog, I got turned onto WinMX, which works just as well as Napster does (in its heyday). So far, have been able to snag stuff by Vivaldi, I Am Kloot, Aaliyah, and (in progress) Goldfrapp.

Isn't Audiogalaxy nothing more than an FTP search engine?

Can't say a thing about Morpheus, since this is the first I've heard of it.

I've not used Morpheus (yet!), but I had (had being the operative word) great success with Audiogalaxy up until a few months ago - both with pop stuff & things a little 'left of centre'. Then one day I couldn't connect to their servers/log-in, and have only been able to do so once since. Seems my problems appeared after nice publicity in Time magazine (I think) & it's been pushed a lot on CNet as the Napster alternative.

So, at the risk of perpetrating the same problem, I now use Win MX (thanks to someone on these boards - sorry, I can't remember who), and find it mighty fine.

Well Audio Galaxy has been my mega sugar daddy lately. I got the entire soundtrack to TRON (out of print) he whole new bjork album, kevin rowland's my beauty, etc etc etc

Audiogalaxy would be nice, as would Morpheus -- *if* they had Mac versions, the bastards. ;-) Anyone know the best equivalents for either service?

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've used Napster, Limewire, Bearshare, Gnutella, and Morpheus. Napster was wonderful. Goodbye, dear napster.
Limewire worked for exactly two days. After that I couldn't find anything I wanted. I couldn't even connect.
Bearshare simply never worked.
Gnutella was utterly useless.
Morpheus is closest to Napster, but the download speed is slower and sometimes files are harder to find. Still, it's the best alternative I've found.

Morpheus is fab. It's what I use at work.

JM, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Where do you find it? www.morpheus.com? I just installed Audiognome (yeah i know), looks pretty decent, lots of servers, neat interface. Too bad most people put you on the bloody remotely queued. Going to put it to the test and find Turbonegro's "Hobbit Motherfucker".

Omar, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I can get you that song if you don't find it, Omar.

Otis Wheeler, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

No doubt there, Otis :) Let me fuck with these search-engines for awhile and then I'll be in touch.

Omar, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I prefer Audiogalaxy.

anthony, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Audiogalaxy's been fine for me and I can usually find reasonably obscure songs if I search for a few different names. However, it becomes almost unusable after America gets up.

John Davey, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Morpheus is at www.musiccity.com or something like that...

JM, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

So Morpheus = pretty good, immediatly found an obscure Orb remix of "3:AM Eternal"...so let's see how long this one stays in working order.

now Otis where can I join the Turbonegro crusade? 'Hobit Motherfucker' is the greatest rock-song since Royal Trux - 'Liar'. Are all their songs that short (and sweet)?

Omar, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nothing will ever surpass WinMX beta 6 for personal nostalgia value. how sick is that? :) Morpheus is functional enough. I haven't used it over a modem, but anybody with bandwidth will fall absolutely in love with it's distributed downloading capability. If it can find extra sources, it'll download different sections of a file from bunches of people at once and reassemble everything flawlessly. Morpheus 1.3 just came out a week or two ago, and it lets you specifically search for additional sources for a file. Excepting a couple interface issues, Morpheus gets my vote.

Cryosmurf, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I got it last night and it does seem pretty good, though I can only compare it to Napster. It's certainly worth downloading, it's only 1Mb or so.

DG, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Audiogalaxy is definitely superior, though the servers have been packed of late. Morpheus... meh. Good interface, but slow downloads, not as much selection, and an annoying habit of deleting stuff that doesn't finish.

palpable, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

For those with Macs Limewire seems like the best Napster-like thing out there. It's not so great w/modem connections and it is a little unresponsive due to Java implementation but does seem to work... mebbe like Napster v. 0.9. Audiogalaxy = cool but a tad circuitous.

Trader Hand, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I haven't tried Morpheus, but Audiogalaxy is putting out the goods for me. Limewire is rather terrible.

Mitch Lastnamewithheld, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I spent about a week trying to download Audiogalaxy, but it told me over and over that "We are not accepting new users at this time." A friend told me it works wonderfully though.

Lyra, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

haven't tried audiogalaxy yet, heard it's infested with spyware? another advantage of Morpheus is that you can download stuff other than music, which has been pretty useful.... Oh and I have had no probs using Morpheus on my crappy 56k connection.

Richard, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The best thing for macs is MP3 Rage, which does both gnutella and napigator type things. It's a 15 day trial, but you can get around that by just deleting the MP3 Rage preferences file every so often.

Kris, Wednesday, 25 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I dunno how you guys find _anything_ on Morpheus and Kazaa and Bearshare and all that. A search for "hrvatski" turned up like, 22 files, half of which were weird Eastern European folksong things. Audiogalaxy is the way to go (though it's being weird right now).
